Buying a fragrance online means giving up the one thing a shop is actually for, which is smelling the bottle. That sounds like a disadvantage and it is not entirely: a listing can be read carefully, at your own pace, and a shop assistant cannot be. What you need is a method, and a firm dislike makes the method much shorter.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the first thing to check on an attar listing? Whether a note list exists at all. This is the step most readers skip and it eliminates more bad purchases than everything else combined. A great many attar listings give you a mood, a story and a category - oriental, floral, luxury - and never tell you what is in the bottle. You cannot rule anything out from an accord or a category, only from named notes. If the notes are not published, the honest conclusion is not that the bottle is bad; it is that you have not been given enough to buy it with.

What should I ignore? The name and the photograph, in that order. A name tells you nothing - ours are named after a person, a nobleman, a courtly idea and a kind of grace, and not one of those words is a note. A photograph tells you less than nothing, because it is styling: a bottle on silk, some petals, some gold. Petals in a photograph are not a floral note and their absence is not a promise either. Ignore the positioning too, which is a decision about which shelf a bottle sells from, ours included.

How do I avoid a blind buy, and what does it cost? Buy the 3ml. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, so the 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399 is the sample size - and the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is not a sampler either, since it is three full-size bottles of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, two of them rose-led, and it excludes Adaa. So: one 3ml of one attar, worn for a full day. Adaa is ₹379 for the 3ml, and the 6ml and 12ml are ₹669 and ₹1,149 once you know.
The short answer
Short answer: six steps. One, check that a note list exists at all - you cannot rule a bottle out from an accord or a category. Two, ignore the name. Three, ignore the photograph and the positioning. Four, read the note order and treat the first two as the subject. Five, count every floral, remembering that neroli is orange blossom and ylang and tuberose are florals too. Six, buy the smallest size and judge the drydown rather than the opening. SOSA Adaa is ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the sample size because SOSA sells no sampler.
The pick: the 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, alcohol-free, and it wears 6-8 hours. Applying the method to our own range: no rose, a jasmine sambac fourth of five in a supporting role, and a neroli third that is an orange-blossom note. If your rule is stricter than that, SOSA Nawaab at ₹399 for 3ml is the only floral-free attar, and it is oud, aged tobacco and leather.
Next step: send me a link to any attar listing you are considering, from us or from anybody else, and I will tell you what it does and does not publish and whether you can rule it out from what is there - Ask for an attar recommendation.

Straight answer
What should a floral-hater look for when buying an attar online?
Six things, in this order, and the whole list takes about two minutes per bottle. One: check that a note list exists at all. This eliminates more bad purchases than every other step combined. A great many attar listings offer you a category and a story - oriental, floral, luxury, royal - and never name a single material. You cannot rule a bottle out from a category, so if the notes are not published, you have not been given enough to buy it with, and the right move is to close the tab rather than to gamble ₹1,200. Two: ignore the name. Ours are a courtly grace, a nobleman, a woman out of Maratha history and a kind of wealth - not one of those is a material. Three: ignore the photograph and the positioning. A photograph is styling: silk, gold, a few loose petals. Petals in an image are not a floral note and their absence is not a promise, and positioning is a decision about which shelf a bottle sells from - including ours. Four: read the note order and treat the first two as the subject. Everything after them is support. Five: count every floral, and count the ones that do not sound like flowers. Neroli is bitter orange blossom. Ylang, tuberose, muguet, osmanthus and mimosa are all florals. A listing can be floral in three places while only naming rose once. Six: buy the smallest size and judge the drydown. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, so the 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399 is the sample size, and the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is not a sampler either - it is three full-size bottles of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, two of them rose-led, and it excludes Adaa entirely. Wear one 3ml for a whole day, because the drydown is the part you will live with, and our attars wear 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure we publish. Now the method applied to us, since a method you cannot use on the shop that taught it to you is worthless. SOSA makes exactly four attars. Ameeri opens Taif rose, so it is a rose: out. Mastani opens night jasmine and Damask rose: out twice. Nawaab has no floral at any position - and it is white royal oud, aged tobacco and leather, which is a separate decision. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac, white musk: no rose, a jasmine sambac fourth of five in a supporting role, and a neroli third that is an orange-blossom note. That is two florals counted properly, and I would rather you did the arithmetic with me than discovered it on your wrist. ₹379 for the 3ml. And the standing limits: SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one, and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind - how your skin reacts to anything is a question for a doctor rather than for a perfumer. Ask for an attar recommendation and send me the listing you are looking at.
Check that a note list exists, ignore the name and the photograph, read the first two notes as the subject, count every floral including neroli, and buy the smallest size - the 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399, because we sell no sampler. Applied to our range: Ameeri and Mastani out, Nawaab floral-free but oud, Adaa's two florals disclosed.
The bottle is one SOSA Adaa - bergamot and green cardamom leading, then neroli and jasmine sambac supporting, then white musk. Two florals, counted honestly, and no rose. Alcohol-free, and it wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the sample size, because we sell no sampler and no discovery set.

SOSA Adaa
What the method lands on for most readers with this rule
SOSA Adaa, 3ml
Bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac, white musk. No rose. Counted properly there are two florals: the jasmine sambac fourth of five in a supporting role and the neroli third, which is orange blossom. Alcohol-free, wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the sample size.
From ₹379
SOSA Nawaab
What it lands on if the rule is zero florals
SOSA Nawaab, 3ml
White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. The only one of our four attars with no floral note at any position - and the heaviest thing we make for skin, so the oud and the leather are a separate decision. Wears 6-8 hours. ₹399 for the 3ml.
From ₹399
SOSA Adaa
The attar the method lands on, with its note list published in full
SOSA Adaa
3ml, 6ml and 12ml at ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149. Published notes, in order: bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk - no rose, no oud, no vanilla and no tonka, and two floral notes counted honestly. An alcohol-free perfume oil with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, hand-blended in Pune by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer. It wears 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. The 3ml is the sample size, because SOSA sells no sampler.

The six checks, in order

Grouped into three, because the first two checks are about the listing, the next two are about the notes, and the last two are about the purchase.

1
First, look for the notes and nothing else
A category, a story and a photograph are not information you can rule a bottle out with
Open the listing and hunt for named materials. If all you find is oriental, floral, luxury, royal or signature, close the tab - not because the attar is bad, but because you have been handed marketing where information should be. Then ignore three things on purpose. The name, which in this trade is almost always a person, a place or an idea and never a material. The photograph, which is styling: silk, gold, a scatter of petals that means nothing either way. And the positioning, which tells you which shelf a bottle sells from rather than what is inside it, ours included.
Tip: If a listing names an accord but no notes, you cannot rule it out. That is a reason not to buy, not a reason to guess.
SOSA Adaa
One bottle of Adaa from ₹379 is the whole purchase here.
See SOSA Adaa →
2
Then read the order and count the florals
The first two notes are the subject, and several florals do not sound like flowers
Treat the published order as a billing order: the first two names are what the composition is about and the rest is support. Then do the counting, which is where most floral-haters get caught. Neroli is a distillate of bitter orange blossom, so it is a floral. So are ylang ylang, tuberose, muguet, osmanthus, mimosa and orange blossom under any of its names. A listing can therefore be floral in three places while printing the word rose only once. Count them all, note which positions they sit in, and only then decide whether the bottle breaks your rule or merely brushes against it.
Tip: Write out every note on the listing and mark the florals. If two of the first three are marked, it is a floral perfume.
SOSA Adaa
One bottle of Adaa from ₹379 is the whole purchase here.

3
Then buy small and judge late
The 3ml is the sample size, because no sampler exists - and the drydown is the part you keep
We sell no attar sampler and no discovery set, and I would rather say that than dress up the Pack of 3, which is ₹1,055 of three full-size bottles - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, two of them rose-led, with no Adaa in it. So the method is one 3ml of one attar: ₹379 for Adaa, ₹399 for Nawaab. Then wear it for a whole day rather than judging it in the first ten minutes, because the opening is the shortest part of a composition and the drydown is what you will actually live with. Our attars wear 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure we publish for anything.
SOSA Nawaab
One bottle of Nawaab from ₹399 is the whole purchase here.
See SOSA Nawaab →
The SOSA principle
Online, the note list is the only part of a listing that can rule a bottle out, because the name, the photograph and the positioning are all decisions about selling rather than facts about contents.
Which turns a blind buy into a reading exercise, and makes a firm dislike the most efficient filter you can bring to it.
SOSA Adaa
The note list, published in full: SOSA Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk - which is exactly the information you need in order to rule it out if you want to. ₹379 for the 3ml.

The method applied to our own four

A method you cannot run on the shop that gave it to you is not worth having, so here it is run on our four attars with nothing left out.

The SOSA shortlist
The six checks applied to SOSA's four attars
The attar What to do
Ameeri
First note Taif rose, so the composition is a rose. Florals counted: one, and it is the subject. Soft oudh in the base as well. Out at step four.
Mastani
First two notes night jasmine and Damask rose, so both subjects are florals. Florals counted: two, both leading. Vanilla and tonka underneath. Out twice.
SOSA AdaaAdaa
First two notes bergamot and green cardamom, so the subject is citrus peel and dry spice. Florals counted: two - jasmine sambac fourth, neroli third - both supporting. ₹379 for the 3ml.
SOSA NawaabNawaab
First note white royal oud. Florals counted: none, at any position. The only one of the four like that, and it is aged tobacco and leather underneath. ₹399 for the 3ml.
The Pack of 3
₹1,055 for three full-size bottles - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani. Two rose-led, no Adaa, and not a sampler. Fails step six for every reader of this page.
The perfume line
Khayaal and Samundar are described by accord only, ₹599 for 10ml, with no note list published - so they fail step one by design, and you buy them on the accord or not at all.

If you want the reasoning behind step four rather than just the rule, it is set out at length in can I buy attar without rose being a major note, which is the page about where a flower sits in a billing order. And if you would rather skip the method and be handed one bottle with the dead end named, that is which SOSA attar to buy if traditional floral fragrance is completely not your style. SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and every attar named here is its own composition.

SOSA Adaa
The 3ml is the sample size: We sell no attar sampler and no discovery set, so one smallest bottle of one attar is how you avoid a blind buy. ₹379 for Adaa, ₹399 for Nawaab.
One bottle, one size, one pulse point
SOSA Adaa is ₹379 for 3ml - the sample size, because we sell no sampler and no discovery set.
See the SOSA Adaa Ask for an attar recommendation
A photograph of petals is not a floral note and a bottle on silk is not a composition, and I have never seen either of them stop somebody buying the wrong thing.

The SOSA attar specification

SOSA makes exactly four attars, and all four note lists are published in full, which is the only reason a reader with a firm rule can shop the range at all without smelling anything. Below is what the method lands on, the stricter alternative, and the honest non-attar route when the rule rules out everything. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

The SOSA attar specification
What the method lands on, at three different strictness levels
Attar or perfume Best for Why it works Price
SOSA Adaa A reader whose rule is that the perfume must not be about a flower Bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac, white musk. No rose; two florals counted honestly, both in supporting positions. Wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the sample size ₹379

SOSA Nawaab A reader whose rule is zero florals at any position White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber - no floral note anywhere, and the heaviest attar of the four. The oud and leather are a separate decision. ₹399 for the 3ml ₹399
View →
SOSA Samundar A reader whose rule also excludes oud, so no attar survives Our perfume line, referred to by SOSA name and accord only: an aquatic marine. Not an attar, and it fails step one by design since no note list is published for the perfume line. ₹599 for 10ml ₹599

The method is the product here, and it works against any brand including this one. SOSA makes exactly four attars, and Ameeri, Mastani and the Pack of 3 are named on this page as failing it, while Adaa's jasmine sambac and neroli and Nawaab's oud, aged tobacco and leather are counted rather than softened. The only longevity figure SOSA publishes is that the attars wear 6-8 hours; nothing is published for the perfume line or for the solid body perfumes, so no figure is given for them here, and no note list is published for the solids at all, which is why this page never tells you how one of them smells and why a reader who needs certainty should stay with the attars. SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one - nothing about compliments, nothing about being noticed - and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind, because how your skin reacts to something is a question for a doctor rather than for a perfumer. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only other thing I will promise you. Ask for an attar recommendation before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

The letters that produce this page tend to arrive at the point of purchase rather than before it. Somebody has three tabs open, none of the bottles can be smelled, two of them have beautiful photographs and one has an actual note list, and they would like to know how to choose. Usually there is a line at the end about having been burned before - a ₹1,200 bottle worn twice and then given away. So the method below is not a philosophy. It is what I would do with those three tabs.

The perfumery part is short. A listing contains exactly one piece of information you can act on, which is the list of named materials and the order they are printed in. Everything else on the page is a decision about selling: the name, which is a person or an idea, the photograph, which is silk and petals, and the positioning, which tells you which shelf the bottle lives on. Read the notes, treat the first two as the subject, and count every floral properly - neroli is orange blossom, and ylang, tuberose and muguet are flowers whatever they sound like. A composition can be floral in three places and print the word rose only once.

Then buy small. We sell no attar sampler and no discovery set, so the 3ml is the sample size: Adaa at ₹379, Nawaab at ₹399 if your rule is zero florals, and the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 avoided, because it is three full-size bottles, two of them rose-led, with no Adaa in it. Wear one 3ml for a whole day and judge the drydown rather than the opening. Adaa carries jasmine sambac and neroli, which the method finds and which I would rather tell you myself. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What should a floral-hater look for when buying attar online?
Six things in order. Check that a note list exists at all, because you cannot rule a bottle out from a category. Ignore the name. Ignore the photograph and the positioning. Read the note order and treat the first two as the subject. Count every floral, including neroli, which is orange blossom. Then buy the smallest size - Adaa is Rs 379 for the 3ml - and judge the drydown rather than the opening.
Should I buy a sampler or a discovery set to test attars?
SOSA sells neither, so the honest answer is the smallest bottle of a single attar. The 3ml is the sample size: Adaa is Rs 379, Nawaab Rs 399, and the 6ml and 12ml follow once you know. The Pack of 3 at Rs 1,055 is not a sampler - it is three full-size bottles of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, two of them rose-led, and Adaa is not in it. One 3ml, worn for a full day.
Which notes count as floral even though they don't sound like it?
Neroli, which is a distillate of bitter orange blossom, and orange blossom under any of its names. Also ylang ylang, tuberose, muguet, osmanthus and mimosa. This matters because a listing can be floral in three places while printing the word rose only once. Count every one of them and note which position it sits in, then decide whether the bottle breaks your rule or only brushes against it.
Does the name or the photograph on a listing tell me anything?
Almost nothing. Attar names are people, places and ideas - SOSA's four are named for a kind of grace, a nobleman, a woman out of Maratha history and a sense of wealth - and none of those is a material. A photograph is styling: silk, gold, a scatter of petals. Petals in an image are not a floral note and their absence is not a promise. Positioning tells you which shelf a bottle sells from, SOSA's included.
Why should I judge the drydown rather than the first ten minutes?
Because the opening is the shortest part of a composition. The bright top notes leave first, the heart holds for an hour or two, and the base is what stays - so the part you will actually live with is the part a quick sniff never reaches. SOSA publishes 6-8 hours for its attars, which is the only longevity figure it publishes for anything, so wear one 3ml for a full day before you decide.
SOSA Adaa
And the pack is not a sampler: The Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is three full-size attars - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, two of them rose-led - and Adaa is not in it at all.
A dislike is better data than a like
SOSA — Attars and Perfume Oils for a reader buying without smelling first

Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, hand-blended in Pune, and it wears 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. The 3ml is the sample size, because SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, and the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is three full-size bottles with no Adaa in it. About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. The products named are SOSA's own; the method - shop the note you have ruled out, not the note you hope for - applies to any brand.

Facts verified 17 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: SOSA makes four attars, each sold in three sizes, 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. SOSA Adaa is ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149, with published notes of bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. SOSA Ameeri is ₹385, ₹679 and ₹1,165, with published notes of Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh. SOSA Mastani is ₹389, ₹685 and ₹1,179, with published notes of night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka. SOSA Nawaab is ₹399, ₹699 and ₹1,199, with published notes of white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. All four are alcohol-free perfume oils with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune, and the only longevity figure SOSA publishes for them is that they wear 6-8 hours. The Pack of 3 (₹1,055, ₹1,859 and ₹3,189) is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, and it does not include Adaa. The SOSA perfume line - including Khayaal and Samundar - comes in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml and is referred to on these pages by its SOSA name and its accord only. SOSA publishes no note list and no longevity figure for the solid body perfumes or for the perfume line, so neither is given here, and how a solid body perfume smells is never described. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, which is why the 3ml is the sample size and is what these pages recommend buying first. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only logistics fact stated on these pages. Choosing a fragrance is a matter of preference: SOSA makes no health, skin-safety, hypoallergenic, therapeutic or wellbeing claim for any fragrance, makes no claim about compliments, confidence or any other outcome of wearing one, and offers nothing here as medical advice - a reaction on skin is a conversation for a doctor rather than for a perfumer. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
