The complaint is real and extremely common, but the diagnosis is usually wrong. A freshly renovated Coimbatore head office is tile, glass, laminate and gypsum, every surface of it hard, and a hard room rings — which the ear reports back to you not as noise but as a room that somehow is not finished yet.
Quick answers — read this first
If the renovation is done, why does the office still feel unfinished? Because almost everything soft was taken out of it. Vitrified tile, glass partitions, a laminate counter, a gypsum ceiling and a steel-framed chair are all reflective, and a room made entirely of reflective things returns every sound in it. You do not consciously hear reverberation; you hear that a chair scrape is sharp, a phone call is bright, a door close carries, and two people at normal distance have to lift their voices slightly. The mind files all of that under unfinished, or under not calm, and almost never under too hard.
How do I check whether that is actually my problem? Stand in the empty room and clap once. In a softened room the sound stops when your hands do. In a hard one it carries on for a beat and comes back off the glass. Then make a phone call from the visitor seating and see whether the person at the other end asks where you are. Then sit two people at conversational distance and notice whether either of you lifts your voice. If those three tell the same story, fragrance is not the missing element, and buying it will not change the answer.
So what should we actually do first? Put softness back, in roughly this order: a proper rug under the seating rather than a mat beside it, upholstered chairs instead of hard-framed ones, a full-height gathered curtain on at least one glazed wall, and something absorbent on a wall or ceiling — a felt panel, a shelf of real books, a run of framed work. Then live with the room for a fortnight. A very large number of offices stop feeling unfinished at that point, and never need anything from me at all.
The short answer
Short answer: In most cases the missing element is sound rather than smell. A new office of tile, glass, laminate and gypsum has nothing soft left in it, so it returns every sound, and the ear reads that brightness as a room not yet finished. Soften it first — rug, upholstered seating, a full-height curtain, something absorbent on a wall — then decide about air. Fragrance cannot make a hard room quiet.
The pick: afterwards, if the room is quiet and you still want the air decided, one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 in the reception volume, run low on a timer.
Next step: if you would rather have the room diagnosed before you buy anything, send photographs of the reception with the ceiling height noted — ask for a scenting plan, and expect to be told to buy a rug first.
The renovation is finished and the office still does not feel the way we wanted — is scent the missing piece?
Probably not, and I would rather lose the order than let you buy the wrong thing twice. When an owner tells me a newly finished office still feels flat, the cause turns out to be acoustic far more often than it turns out to be anything else. Look at what a fit-out in one of the Peelamedu or Saravanampatti blocks usually produces: vitrified tile on the floor, glass partitions, a laminate counter, an aluminium-framed door, a gypsum ceiling, powder-coated steel chairs. Every one of those is a hard, reflective surface, and the soft things that used to be in the room — a rug, a curtain, upholstery, a shelf of books, even a lot of paper — tend to be the items that get value-engineered out along the way. The result is a room that returns sound instead of absorbing it. A chair scrape is sharp. A door close carries. A phone call sounds bright and slightly distant. Two people at ordinary conversational distance each lift their voice a fraction without noticing. Nobody standing in that room says this is reverberant. What they say is that it does not feel finished, or that it does not feel calm, or — in the phrase I hear most — that it does not feel settled. Meanwhile the rooms that people hold up as the standard, the good hotel lobby and the well-made showroom, are above all quiet rooms: carpet, heavy curtain, upholstered seating, an absorbent ceiling. A great deal of what gets called luxury in an interior is simply that quietness, and fragrance has never made a hard room quiet. So the order is: soften first. A rug large enough that the seating stands on it, not a mat beside it. Upholstered chairs in place of hard frames. A full-height gathered curtain on at least one glazed wall — gathered, because a flat roller blind does very little. Something absorbent on a wall or the ceiling: a felt panel, a bookcase with real books, an acoustic tile where the gypsum is flat. Then live with it for a fortnight. If the room has settled, you are done and I have sold you nothing. If it has settled and you now want the air decided as well, that is a legitimate second question and the answer is one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 in the reception volume, run low, with the production floor at zero. Ambient fragrance is an interior and brand-experience decision that works alongside your housekeeping and ventilation rather than instead of them, and nobody can promise it moves a commercial number — not an enquiry, not an order, not a contract.
Usually it is sound, not smell. A new office of tile, glass and gypsum returns every noise in it, and the ear reads that brightness as a room not yet finished. Soften it first; decide about air afterwards.
If the room is genuinely quiet already and the air is the remaining question, the answer is one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 in the reception volume, run low on a timer. A 400ml tank lasts 90+ days and it draws about 5W. If the room still rings, buy the rug instead.
The machines, and when they are the right question
Treat this section as conditional. If the clap test came back long and bright, the ladder below is not your purchase this quarter and no rung of it will fix what you are describing. If the room is already soft and quiet, then the bottom rung is almost always the answer, and the images go through to the live pages so you can check the coverage against your own cubic-metre figure.
₹11,999. Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, roughly 2,000-3,000 sq ft at an ordinary ceiling. Adjustable intensity, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, app and onboard control, key-lock, under 38dB, a 400ml tank at 90+ days. Waterless, so no moisture and no residue on surfaces.
₹25,999. HVAC nebulising diffuser rated to 3,000m³, roughly 8,000-10,000 sq ft at an ordinary ceiling, 800ml reservoir, metal body, programmable schedules, under 42dB. Meant for an entire office building on air handling, and the wrong answer for one renovated reception.
₹11,999, 1000m³ coverage or about 2,000-3,000 sq ft at an ordinary ceiling. Waterless nebulisation of undiluted oil — no water, no heat, no steam. 400ml tank lasting 90+ days, Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, auto-stop, key-lock, under 38dB, 5W, which is roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour daily schedule. Freestanding, wall or HVAC mount. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India.
First how to confirm the diagnosis in ten minutes without an instrument, then what to put back into the room and in what order, and finally — for the readers whose rooms are already quiet — the arithmetic and the boundary for the machine.

Three tests, ten minutes, no instrument required
Clap once in the empty room and listen to what happens after your hands stop. In a softened room the sound ends with the clap; in a hard one it carries on for a beat and returns off the glass, slightly brighter than it left. That is the whole test. Then make a phone call standing in the visitor seating and notice whether the person at the other end asks where you are calling from — a reverberant room is unmistakable down a line even when it is subtle in the room. Then put two people at ordinary conversational distance and watch whether either lifts their voice. Three results pointing the same way is a diagnosis, and it is a more reliable one than any opinion about the room, including mine. Owners are the worst judges of their own buildings because they have stopped hearing them.
Tip: Do all three before opening hours, with the air conditioning off. The plant noise from an AC masks exactly the thing you are trying to hear.
If those tests come back hard, the Vaayu is not your purchase this quarter and I would rather say so on the page than in an email afterwards.
Start with the floor, because it is the largest single reflective surface you own. A rug big enough that the front legs of the seating stand on it does far more than a small mat placed beside the furniture; area is what matters and the usual mistake is buying one two sizes too small. Then the seating itself: upholstered chairs rather than steel or moulded frames, because a soft seat absorbs while an empty hard one reflects. Then at least one full-height curtain, gathered rather than flat, across a glazed wall — a flat roller blind is almost acoustically invisible, while the same material gathered into folds is not. Then a wall or the ceiling: a felt or fabric panel, a bookcase holding actual books, an acoustic tile where the gypsum runs flat. Four moves, no wall demolished, and every one of them reversible.
Tip: Do the rug and the curtain first and stop for two weeks. The two of them together settle a surprising number of rooms without anything further being bought.
Once the room is quiet, a Vaayu on a timer is a reasonable last layer. Before then it is simply one more thing arriving into a room that is already answering back.
For a quiet room: the sum, and the door it stops at
Square feet × ceiling height in metres × 0.0929 = cubic metres, and a renovated office is exactly where people guess instead of measuring, because the false ceiling has changed the height since the drawing was made. A 1,400 sq ft reception and waiting area in a textile-machinery company's new head office in Peelamedu, under a finished 3.0 m ceiling, is 1,400 × 3.0 × 0.0929, about 390 m³. Take the same floor plan with the gypsum removed and an exposed 3.8 m slab and it becomes about 494 m³. One machine rated to 1000m³ covers either comfortably, which is the argument for a single source run gently rather than a second unit added later. Then the boundary, and it does not move: the office is in the plan, the production floor is zero, not milder and not smaller, and the boundary itself is a door and an air path rather than a line on the drawing.
Tip: Measure to the finished ceiling as it now stands, not to the slab on the architect's section. The renovation changed the number.
One Vaayu covers both of those figures with room in hand, which is what lets it run quietly rather than be worked hard in a large space.
A great deal of what people call luxury in an interior is simply quietness. The lobbies held up as the standard are carpeted, curtained and upholstered rooms, and their softness is doing most of the work that gets credited to the marble.
Which is why a hard new office feels unresolved no matter what is added to the air, and why this page sends a good share of its readers to a furnishing shop instead.
The machine fact that matters in a works: it is waterless. No water, no steam, no moisture added to the room and no residue left on surfaces — and that is the boundary of what I will assert. Anything past it belongs to your own maintenance engineer rather than to a fragrance supplier.
Symptom by symptom, and what it usually turns out to be
Owners describe this problem in four or five recurring phrases, and each of them points fairly reliably at a cause. Here they are with the likeliest diagnosis attached, including the one room that never enters the plan whatever the symptom.
The SOSA plan
The phrase an owner uses, and what is usually behind it
How the room gets described
The likeliest cause, and what to do
It does not feel finished, or does not feel settled
Almost always acoustic. Hard floor, glass, laminate and gypsum with nothing soft left in the room. Rug, upholstered seating, a gathered full-height curtain, then a wall or ceiling panel — in that order, and none of it from us.
It feels cold, or clinical, or like a bank branch
Usually light temperature rather than sound. Cool-white over the seating group does this reliably; warm lamps over that zone only, leaving the working desks alone, is an hour's work and entirely reversible. View →
It is quiet and warm and still feels like nobody lives here
This is the one where air is a fair answer. A room with no smell of its own resets to neutral every time the door opens, and one machine run low gives it a constant it otherwise lacks. View →
The production floor, the stores and the shop-floor passage
Never in the plan, whatever the symptom and whatever the renovation covered. Not a lower setting and not a smaller unit — nothing. The plant has its own extraction, heat, solvents and safety protocol, and that protocol governs.
If the renovation has not happened yet, the cheap reversible version of this list is set out in order in the four small upgrades that date a building. If the worry is that a smarter office will read as spending to long-standing customers, the plain office as a strategy deals with that squarely. And if you are not certain the room carries any part of your argument at all, the three-question test may send you back to work with nothing bought. SOSA makes no claim that ambient fragrance affects enquiries, orders, contracts or any commercial number.
If the room is quiet, schedule rather than strengthen: a timer opening an hour before the first appointment does more than any increase in output, and the key-lock stops a helpful person raising the level on the morning a hard room happens to sound emptier than usual.
Considered only after the room has stopped returning sound, then sized on the connected cubic metres of the office side, run low, on a schedule built around arrivals. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
If the clap test came back long and bright, buy the rug and the curtain and come back in a month — or, if you want a marker in the room meanwhile, a Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849 and nothing electrical. Ambient scent here is an interior and brand-experience decision, with no claim that it affects enquiries, orders, contracts or any commercial number — nobody can promise that, and a supplier who quotes you a figure is selling you a story. It sits alongside housekeeping, ventilation and source control and never replaces them, and it does not remove, settle or reduce dust. The production floor, the stores and any area governed by a plant safety rule or a customer's audit requirement stay unscented, and that protocol decides, not us. SOSA publishes no bulk pricing, no minimum order, no custom branding, no lead time, no installation and no maintenance terms; a multi-site question goes to our contact page with nothing promised. Ask for a scenting plan and the room gets diagnosed before anything is quoted.

A note from Sonal
A family firm off Avinashi Road called me in a fortnight after handing back a renovated head office. The work was genuinely good: new floor, glass cabins, a proper counter, all of it done well. The owner walked me through it twice and then said, almost apologetically, that it still felt like a room you would wait in rather than a room you would arrive at. I asked everyone to leave and clapped once. The sound came back off two walls and the glass, and we both heard it at the same moment.
They bought a rug that covered most of the seating area, replaced six steel-framed chairs with upholstered ones, and hung a gathered curtain across the window wall they had been keeping bare on purpose. I sold them nothing for two months. When they did eventually ask about the air, it was a different and much smaller question, and the machine went in on the lowest setting it has.
I lose this argument about half the time and I would still rather make it. We make no claim that ambient fragrance affects enquiries, orders, contracts or any commercial outcome, and a machine bought to fix an acoustic problem will disappoint you twice — once for the money and once for the delay. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Are you really telling me to buy a rug instead of your machine?
For a large share of the people who arrive at this question, yes. A rug under the seating, upholstered chairs and one gathered curtain will do more for a hard new office than anything I sell, and they cost less than the renovation already has. If the room is quiet afterwards and you still want the air settled, that is a real second question and I am happy to answer it then.
Could it be that the office simply needs more furniture?
Sometimes, but the useful distinction is soft against hard. Adding a glass-topped table, a metal display unit and a laminate shelf will fill the room without changing anything you can hear. Adding a rug, a curtain, upholstered seating and a bookcase with real books in it will. Density is not the variable; absorbency is, and it is the one that gets left out of a fit-out specification.
Does a false ceiling not already deal with the sound?
A plain gypsum ceiling is a hard flat surface like any other, and in many renovations it makes the room slightly brighter rather than softer. A perforated or mineral acoustic tile behaves quite differently. If the ceiling is already up and you would rather not touch it, the floor and the window wall will get you most of the way, because between them they are usually the two largest reflective areas in the room.
How long should I wait before deciding about fragrance?
Give the softened room a fortnight, and judge it on a morning when you have walked in from outside rather than sat in it since eight. The nose and the ear both adapt fast, so the honest reading comes from arrival, not from occupancy. If the room has settled and the air is the only thing still bothering you, the decision after two weeks is a much better one than the decision today.
Will a room that feels finished change how customers treat us?
I have no way of telling you that, and neither has anyone selling a machine, a rug or a renovation. There is no claim here that acoustics or ambient fragrance affects an enquiry, an order, a contract or any commercial figure. The narrow, defensible reason to soften the room is that a visitor stops feeling faintly unsettled without being able to say why, which is a modest thing and also a true one.
Only when the whole block is in scope: the SOSA Angaan at ₹25,999 is rated to 3,000m³ and belongs on air handling serving an entire office building. Buying it to answer a renovation complaint about one reception would be spending a great deal to address the wrong problem.

Facts verified 16 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and onboard button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, operation under 38dB, DC 12V/1A at 5W (roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour daily schedule), freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Angaan (₹25,999) is an HVAC nebulising diffuser rated to 3,000m³, roughly 8,000-10,000 sq ft, with an 800ml reservoir, metal body, programmable schedules and operation under 42dB, and also runs standalone wall-mounted or lay-flat. The SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) is the largest machine in the range, quoted for roughly 12,000-18,000 sq ft of HVAC-connected space. Ambient scent is an interior and brand-experience decision: it works alongside proper ventilation, housekeeping and source control and is not a substitute for any of them. SOSA makes no claim that ambient fragrance affects sales, footfall, enquiries, order value, buyer decisions, contracts or any commercial outcome. SOSA makes no health, clinical, diagnostic or air-treatment claim of any kind, and nothing in this guide is medical advice; in any clinical or treatment setting the facility's own policy and its clinicians decide what is appropriate. CE, RoHS and SGS are electrical and compliance marks. SOSA makes no claim about the effect of ambient fragrance on any product, material, fabric, finish or stock held in a building; what can be stated is that the Vaayu is waterless, adds no moisture to the air and leaves no residue on surfaces.
