The usual approach is to try harder: scroll their photographs, ask a sibling, reconstruct a person from fragments. It rarely works, because taste is not a fact you can recover at a distance and years abroad genuinely change what somebody reaches for. So change the question. Instead of hunting for the gift most likely to be right, rank the candidates by what happens when you are wrong - because you might be, and the options differ enormously in how expensive, how visible and how permanent that outcome is.
Why this survives a taste question: the guess is spread across four bottles and carried by a consumable. Every SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is supplied with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each, in one of three published four-scent sets. SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
Quick answers — read this first
What do you give someone returning from years abroad when you do not know their taste? Choose by failure cost rather than by hit rate. A reed diffuser from ₹749 that misses is a small bottle that runs about 6 to 10 weeks and is gone. A decorative object that misses has to be displayed or explained for years. SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 splits the difference: neutral hardware plus four 100 ml fragrances to try.
Is fragrance less dependent on visual preference than a decorative gift? It is not a visual choice at all, which removes the layer you have least information about. There is still a taste decision in the scent itself, so the useful question is how reversible that part is. Four 100 ml bottles in the box give four starting points rather than one verdict, and waterless nebuliser refills are ₹1,049 for 100 gm.
What is the safest small option? A single reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹1,349, or a duo set from ₹1,498. Passive, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in and nothing to operate, and a miss costs very little and disappears on its own.
The short answer
Short answer: Stop optimising for a correct guess and rank the options by what a wrong one costs. A decorative object that misses is permanent and visible. A reed diffuser from Rs 749 that misses runs about 6 to 10 weeks and is gone. SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is neutral hardware plus four 100 ml fragrances to try.
Why: It takes the visual decision out of the gift entirely, the remaining taste decision is carried by fragrance that is used up rather than by an object that stays, and the cheapest options fail almost invisibly.
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
They have lived abroad for years and I honestly do not know their taste any more. What kind of welcome home gift depends least on getting that right?
Reframe the problem, because the usual one is unsolvable. You are not going to reconstruct somebody's current taste from a distance, and years in another country change what a person reaches for in ways no photograph shows. So sort the candidates by failure cost instead of by hit rate. A decorative object that misses is permanent, visible and has to be given a position in a house they have just set up. A fragrance that misses is used up and replaced. That difference is the whole decision. Within fragrance there are two levels. The small one: reed diffusers at ₹749 to ₹849 in 50 ml and ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 in 130 ml, passive, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in, and a duo set from ₹1,498 when it should look like an occasion. The larger one: SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, a waterless cold-air machine with a dry residue-free mist, no water and no heat, published for up to 1000 m3, stated as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, a 400ml refillable tank, Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours with day scheduling and adjustable intensity, under 38 dB, 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm at 0.9 kg, black or white, CE, RoHS and SGS marked, made in India, and supplied with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances of 100 ml each. Those four bottles are the reason it survives a taste question at all: it is one machine and four starting points rather than a single guess. Two honest limits: a coverage figure assumes one connected body of air, and fragrance adds a scent rather than taking one away. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
You are not going to guess right. Choose the option where being wrong is cheap, quiet and temporary, and the shortlist writes itself.
The quick version: a reed diffuser from ₹749 when you know very little, and Vaayu at ₹11,999 when the floor is open and somebody will set a schedule. Four 100 ml fragrances in the box.
How to choose when you have no reliable information
Three moves, and the first one changes what you are shopping for rather than where you are shopping.
1
Move one
Rank by failure cost, not by how likely you are to be right
Write down what actually happens if each candidate misses, because the candidates differ far more in that column than in their chance of landing.
A decorative object that misses is the worst case. It is permanent, it is visible, it has to be given a position in a house somebody has just organised, and it cannot be quietly retired without the giver noticing on the next visit. That is a lot of consequence riding on information you do not have.
A fragrance that misses is close to the best case. It has no position to occupy, it is consumed rather than kept, and disliking it is not a verdict anybody has to deliver. A 50 ml reed at ₹749 that turns out to be wrong runs about 6 to 10 weeks and then the bottle goes in the recycling. The machine sits between the two: the hardware is neutral and the taste-bearing part is oil that gets used up, so even at ₹11,999 the part you are guessing about is the replaceable part. Rank the three that way and the order is obvious long before you know anything about the person.
Tip: The question is not what lands. It is what a miss costs, and the spread there is enormous.
2
Move two
Reduce the guess to one decision instead of two
Most gifts make you guess twice: once about the object and once about the content. Furniture, art, tableware and clothing are all object-and-content in a single item, and a miss on either one is a miss.
Fragrance separates them cleanly. The object, if there is one, is either invisible or functional - a plain reed bottle, or a machine at 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg in black or white that can stand flat or take a wall or HVAC mount. Nobody is being asked to like it. The whole taste question lives in the scent, and the scent is a consumable.
That is why the four bottles in the box matter so much here. Every Vaayu is supplied with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances of 100 ml each, in one of three published four-scent sets, all at ₹11,999. You are not handing over one opinion; you are handing over four and letting the household decide. If none suits, waterless nebuliser refills at ₹1,049 for 100 gm are a small correction. At the smaller end the same logic gives you a duo set from ₹1,498 - two bottles in one box, though only three pairings are published and none is composed to order.
3
Move three
Then check the two facts about the house that override all of this
How open is the floor?Vaayu publishes up to 1000 m3, stated on the product page as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, and that figure assumes one connected body of air. If the house they have come back to is a set of rooms behind doors, no machine makes it one volume, and small passive bottles in two or three rooms are simply the better gift. If entrance, living and dining run together, the figure is describing the real thing.
Will anybody actually operate it? This is the question a taste-uncertain giver should ask hardest. A machine is controlled by a Bluetooth app or the buttons on the unit, with run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours, chosen days, adjustable intensity, auto-stop and a key-lock, and it runs under 38 dB. That is excellent if somebody sets it once. It is a shelf ornament if nobody ever will, and a passive bottle is the honest answer for a household like that.
And the things nobody publishes. How long a 400ml fill runs is stated two ways on the page - about 75 days in the specification data and 90 or more in the body copy - and it depends on intensity and scheduled hours anyway. There is no warranty period, no installation service and no running-cost figure. Ask on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 rather than guessing at those as well.
Tip: Two facts about the house beat every inference about the person. Get those first.
Read the number strictly, not generously
About 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft - of air that is actually connected
Vaayu publishes a coverage figure, which almost nothing in home fragrance does: up to 1000 m3, stated as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. The caveat matters more than the number. A rating assumes one connected body of air. A ground floor that runs living into dining into a stairwell is one volume and is exactly what the figure describes. A bungalow of the same total area with six closed doors is not one volume, it is six rooms, and the figure does not transfer. Work out how much of the house is genuinely open before you work out anything else - and note that no guidance is published on what a second unit adds.
A short way through it when you have almost no information
Write what a miss costs for each candidate. Rank by that column alone.
Drop anything where the object and the content are one inseparable guess.
Ask whether the house has a joined floor and whether anyone will set a timer.
Reeds from Rs 749 if either answer is no. Vaayu at Rs 11,999 if both are yes.
The SOSA principle
When you cannot recover somebody's taste, stop optimising for a hit and optimise for a cheap miss. Fragrance is the category where the object carries no opinion and the opinion is carried by something that gets used up.
That is a structural advantage rather than a matter of preference, and it holds whether you spend Rs 749 or Rs 11,999, which is why this page starts with the failure column instead of the price.
What is in the box, and how much of the guess it actually carries
Three four-scent sets are published and all three cost the same ₹11,999, so the choice costs nothing either way. They pair Ritz-Carlton with Westin, St. Regis and 1 Hotels inspirations; Westin with Shangri-La, Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton; and St. Regis with W Hotels, 1 Hotels and Four Seasons. To be exact: these are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations, composed by SOSA, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. For a taste question specifically, the hotel register has one real advantage and one real drawback. The advantage is that it is deliberately unassertive, which is what you want when you know nothing. The drawback is that it is unassertive, and somebody coming back after years away may want a house that smells like theirs rather than like a lobby. Four bottles is enough to find out without another purchase, and nebuliser oils at ₹1,049 for 100 gm cover the correction.
The SOSA gift edit
Four options, sorted by what a wrong guess costs
The option
Who it suits, and where it fails
A single reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹1,349
The lowest failure cost in the range. Passive, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, and a miss simply finishes and is gone. It stops working when it is asked to serve a large joined floor, where a passive bottle reaches the area immediately around it and no further.
A reed duo set · ₹1,498 to ₹2,598
Two bottles in one published box, so it reads as an occasion without becoming a bigger guess. Only three pairings exist, none is composed to order, and both bottles in a set are the same size. It stops working if you wanted the gift to look substantial next to a house somebody has just finished.
SOSA Vaayu · ₹11,999
Neutral hardware plus four 100 ml fragrances, so the taste guess is spread across four starting points and carried by a consumable. Published for up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected air, under 38 dB, scheduled in 1, 4, 8 or 24-hour windows. It stops working in a house of shut rooms, or where nobody will ever set a schedule.
A decorative object · any price
The highest failure cost on the list. Permanent, visible, needs a position in a house they have just organised, and it is read as a statement about how well you know them. It works only when you have seen the rooms and genuinely know the taste, which is exactly what years away has taken away from you.
The two details that matter in a finished house
Under 38 dB, and it runs only when you tell it to
Two published details decide whether this belongs in a house somebody spent years on. It runs under 38 dB, which is the answer to the reasonable worry about a machine humming in a double-height living room. And it is scheduled: Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours, chosen days and adjustable intensity, with auto-stop and a key-lock. That is what makes it workable in a house occupied for part of the year, or a room used only when people come over. It is 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted, and it ships with four 100 ml fragrances - so it is complete on the day it arrives.
Two other formats come up on this question and both are worth a straight answer. Attars from ₹379 in 3 ml are worn rather than placed, so they move the guess onto the person instead of the house, which is a harder guess rather than an easier one when you have been out of touch. Candles from ₹399 need a flame and somebody to light them, which is simply what the format is, and no burn-hour figure is published for them. At the other end, SOSA Meenar at ₹38,500 is published for 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft and is a commercial machine, so it is the wrong answer rather than the generous one. SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 goes with a person to a car or a hotel room and is imported rather than made in India.
₹11,999. Up to 1000 m3, stated as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected volume. A 400ml tank, Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, 1h/4h/8h/24h run windows and adjustable intensity. Under 38 dB.
165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, in black or white, freestanding on a surface or wall and HVAC mounted. DC 12V / 1A at 5W, with auto-stop and a key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS marks.
Every Vaayu ships with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each, in one of three published four-scent sets. So it is complete on arrival, which matters more for a gift than it sounds.
four x 100 ml included
The number this whole decision turns on, and where it stops being true
Up to 1000 m3 - about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft - of connected air
SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 publishes a coverage figure, which almost nothing else in home fragrance does: up to 1000 m3, stated on the product page as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. It is a waterless cold-air machine producing a dry, residue-free mist with no water and no heat, running under 38 dB on DC 12V / 1A at 5W, with a 400ml refillable tank, Bluetooth app and onboard button control, run windows of 1h, 4h, 8h or 24h, day scheduling and adjustable intensity, plus auto-stop and a key-lock. It is 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, in black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted, CE, RoHS and SGS marked, and its country of origin is India. But a coverage rating assumes one connected body of air. That figure describes an open-plan living-dining floor, a duplex's main level, a double-height hall - the kind of volume a small passive bottle cannot reach. It does not describe a bungalow with every internal door closed, because that is not one volume; it is six. Above about 3,000 sq ft of genuinely connected space, or across separated wings, the honest answer is a conversation rather than a number, because no multi-unit guidance is published. SOSA Meenar at ₹38,500 is published for 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft and is a commercial machine rather than a house gift.
Tell SOSA who it is for, roughly how big the room is, whether their home is already scented and what you want to spend - and you will be told which size and which scent, including the times the honest answer is the 50ml rather than the 130ml.
You cannot buy better information about somebody you have not lived near for years. You can buy the option where being wrong costs almost nothing and disappears by itself.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA
The SOSA gifting range
Two questions settle almost every reed diffuser gift, and the first one is not price. How big is the room it is going into? A 50ml suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or a first diffuser; a 130ml suits an open-plan living and dining area, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom. Then: how much do you actually know about their taste? The less you know, the less declarative the scent should be - Morning Freshness is the safest of the five for a home you have never stood in, and Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla is the strongest opinion in the range. Price follows those two answers rather than leading them.
The SOSA range, sorted by how much air it is meant to handle
Up to 1000 m3, stated as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected volume - a 400ml tank, Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, 1h/4h/8h/24h scheduling, adjustable intensity, under 38 dB
Worn on the body rather than placed in a room - the right answer when the gift is about the person and not the house
from ₹379
A coverage rating assumes one connected body of air. Vaayu's figure describes an open-plan volume - a living-dining floor, a duplex's main level, a double-height hall. A house with every internal door shut is not one volume, and the figure does not transfer to it. Every Vaayu ships with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each, and its country of origin is India. Fragrance adds a scent to a space; it does not remove, neutralise or purify one, and the dry residue-free mist is a statement about residue rather than about air quality. SOSA blends described as hotel-inspired are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Prices above are published retail prices; bulk orders are welcome and quantities are settled on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531. SOSA is an Indian fragrance house based in Pune. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The honest spec sheet
What the Vaayu page publishes, and what it does not
Everything below is on the live product page. Anything not on this list is not something a page like this should state.
The machine - waterless cold-air diffusion, dry and residue-free, no water and no heat. 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm, 0.9 kg, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted. DC 12V / 1A, 5W. Under 38 dB. Auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS. Country of origin India.
Control - a 400ml refillable tank, Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, run windows of 1h, 4h, 8h or 24h, day scheduling and adjustable intensity. This is what makes it workable in a house that is empty for stretches, or a room used only at weekends.
In the box - every Vaayu ships with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each, in one of three published four-scent sets, all at ₹11,999. SOSA blends described as hotel-inspired are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
The fragrance - alcohol-free, water-free oils formulated for cold-air diffusion. SOSA waterless nebuliser refills are ₹1,049 for 100 gm and ₹1,849 for 300 gm and are published for Vaayu and Safar. The water-based ultrasonic bottles belong to a different kind of machine.
Not published, and therefore never stated here: how long a 400ml fill lasts as a single figure - the page says about 75 days in one place and 90 or more in another; what a second unit adds; any warranty period, service interval or filter; any installation service; any app name, phone compatibility or Bluetooth range; and any running or electricity cost. Those go to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
Not sure whether the house needs a machine or a bottle? Tell SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 four things: roughly how much of the ground floor is one connected open volume, whether the internal doors stay open or shut, how often the house is actually occupied, and what you want to spend. You will get one straight answer rather than a catalogue - including the times the honest answer is a reed diffuser from ₹749 or a duo set from ₹1,498 rather than a machine. What is not on this page, because SOSA does not publish it: what a second unit adds, any warranty period, any installation service, any running or electricity cost, and any app or Bluetooth compatibility detail. One thing to check before you buy: the Vaayu page states the life of a 400ml fill two different ways - about 75 days in one place and 90 or more in another - and it depends on intensity and scheduled hours in any case, so ask rather than plan around a number. Every Vaayu ships with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each; SOSA waterless nebuliser refills are ₹1,049 for 100 gm and ₹1,849 for 300 gm. Bulk orders are welcome and custom label or logo on product is available; quantities and anything commercial are settled on WhatsApp rather than priced on a page. Bespoke composition, a fragrance composed for you by Sonal, is a real SOSA service and is also discussed there. Where SOSA is: an Indian fragrance house based in Pune, sending orders across India, with no shop, stockist, counter or warehouse in any other city.

A note from Sonal
The messages I find hardest to answer are the ones that begin with an apology. They have just finished building the house. I don't want to sound cheap, but I also can't buy them anything that matters at that scale. And underneath it is a real anxiety: that after years of drawings and delays and site visits, whatever you turn up with will look like a token.
What I would say is that the anxiety is aimed at the wrong thing. You are not competing with the house. Nobody is. The people who built it spent two years choosing between four shades of the same stone, and there is no object you can hand over that will register on that scale. Trying is how people end up buying a vase that gets moved to a spare room.
The reason I keep coming back to scent for these particular houses is unromantic. It is the last layer, and it is the only one nobody planned. An architect resolves the volume, a designer resolves the surfaces, a lighting consultant resolves the evening, and then everybody stops - because scent is not on anybody's drawing. So it is one of the few things left that adds to a finished house without arguing with a single decision already made in it.
The part I would be careful about is the number. Vaayu publishes a coverage figure, which almost nothing in home fragrance does, and I would rather you read it strictly than generously. About 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, of air that is actually connected. A ground floor that opens living into dining into a stairwell is that. A bungalow with six closed doors is not that, whatever its total square footage says on paper, and a page that blurs the two is doing you no favours.
Frequently asked questions
Is fragrance really a safer gift when I do not know their taste?
It removes the visual decision entirely, which is the part you have least information about, and it puts the remaining decision on something that gets used up rather than something that stays in the room. A reed diffuser from Rs 749 that misses runs about 6 to 10 weeks and is finished. A decorative object that misses stays.
What comes in the box with SOSA Vaayu?
Four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances of 100 ml each, in one of three published four-scent sets, all at the same Rs 11,999. That is the point for a taste question: four starting points rather than one verdict. Those blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
Should I choose the bolder scent or the quieter one?
The less you know, the less declarative the scent should be. That is the honest rule and it does not change with price. If you are buying a single reed diffuser, the fresher citrus registers ask less of a household than a coffee and vanilla one. If you are buying the machine, the four bottles let the household make that call instead of you.
Will one machine be enough for a bungalow if I go that route?
It depends on how open the house is rather than how large. The published figure is up to 1000 cubic metres, stated as approximately 2,000 to 3,000 square feet, and it assumes one connected body of air. A house of rooms behind closed doors is not one volume. SOSA publishes no figure for what a second machine would add, so ask on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.
What if they simply do not like any of the four fragrances?
Then the correction is cheap, which is the whole argument of this page. SOSA waterless nebuliser refills are Rs 1,049 for 100 gm and Rs 1,849 for 300 gm, and the machine takes alcohol-free, water-free oils made for cold-air diffusion. The water-based bottles on the site belong to the ultrasonic machines, so anything beyond the nebuliser refills is a WhatsApp question.

Buy the cheap miss, not the likely hit
Reed diffusers from ₹749 or a duo set from ₹1,498 when you know very little and want a miss to cost almost nothing. Vaayu at ₹11,999 when the floor is genuinely joined, somebody will set a schedule, and four 100 ml fragrances in the box are doing the guessing for you. Tell SOSA on WhatsApp what you know about the house and you will get the smaller answer when the smaller answer is right.
Not sure which one suits the person you are buying for? Send SOSA their age, whether they drive, whether they like their home scented and your budget on WhatsApp, and you will get an honest answer - including when the cheaper product is the better gift.

About the coverage figure: a rating assumes one connected body of air. The published figure describes an open-plan volume such as a living-dining floor, a duplex's main level or a double-height hall, and does not describe a property whose rooms are separated by closed doors, whatever its total floor area. No guidance is published on what a second unit adds. About tank life: the Vaayu product page states the life of one 400 ml fill in two different ways - approximately 75 days in its specification and FAQ data, and 90 or more days in its body copy - and in either case it depends on the intensity setting and the scheduled hours, so no single figure is stated on this page. What is not published, and is therefore not stated here: any warranty period, service interval or filter; any installation service; any app name, phone compatibility or Bluetooth range; any running or electricity cost; and any multi-unit coverage. Limits of this guide: fragrance adds a scent to a space. It does not remove, neutralise, mask or purify odour, it does not clean the air, and no SOSA product makes any health, antibacterial or air-purifying claim; a dry residue-free mist is a statement about residue and not about air quality. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep or wellbeing, nor about how any recipient or guest will feel, nor about what a gift does for any business result. No page here characterises any recipient's wealth or describes people who own particular kinds of property; where a property value appears it is the figure the reader themselves supplied as context. SOSA blends described as hotel-inspired are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. SOSA Home & Body is an Indian fragrance house based in Pune, Maharashtra, sending orders across India, with no shop, showroom, stockist, counter or warehouse in any other city.
