Why heater vents smell - and why it is a mechanical fix first
That first-of-winter heater smell has a few usual causes, and almost none of them are about fragrance. Over the warm months, the air-con system can leave a little damp and mildew on the evaporator behind the dashboard; dust settles in the vents and ducts; and the cabin air filter - the filter every modern car has for the air you breathe - quietly clogs with dust, leaves and moisture. Switch the heater on and all of that gets pushed into the cabin at once. Some cars also give a brief dusty smell as warm air burns off settled dust on first use, which clears on its own.
What a spray can and cannot do here
A car spray masks and freshens the cabin air. It cannot clean your ducts, dry the evaporator, or replace a clogged cabin air filter - and it does not purify the air. If a musty filter is feeding smell into the cabin every time the fan runs, a fragrance just rides on top of it. The fix that actually works is mechanical; the spray is what keeps things pleasant afterwards.
So before you reach for any bottle, do the two things that matter. Run the blower on high, fresh-air mode, for a few minutes to push stale air and loose dust out of the ducts - cracking a window helps it clear. Then replace the cabin air filter. It is an inexpensive part, usually behind the glovebox, and on most cars you can change it yourself in a few minutes; a fresh filter is the single biggest improvement for vent smell.
