Founder Diaries · Fragrance vs Diffusion
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles5 min readUpdated August 2026
The clean verdict, first: the diffuser determines how much of the room you can smell — not the oil. The fragrance decides what your room smells of; the diffusion method decides how far it travels. Get that hierarchy right and you'll never buy the wrong thing again.
Quick answer
Which determines room reach? The diffuser. Projection is a device property; the oil sets character, not distance.
Does the oil matter for projection? Only a little. It decides richness up close, not how far the scent carries.
Which device for me? Small room → Safar ₹3,999 / Sukoon ₹1,899. Large room → Vaayu ₹11,999.
The short version
Short answer: The diffuser wins. It sets projection; the oil sets character. For "how much of the room," look at the device.
The two questions people quietly merge
"How much of the room can I smell my fragrance in?" and "how good is the fragrance?" feel like the same question, so people answer both by buying a better oil. But they're separate. The first is about projection — reach through space. The second is about quality — how the scent smells when it gets to you. The oil owns the second question completely and barely touches the first.
Projection is a matter of energy. For scent to travel to the far side of a room, something has to keep lifting it off the source and pushing it through the air. A reed diffuser has no such engine — only slow evaporation, which fills a small pool around the bottle and no more. That's why a magnificent, costly oil in a reed can still leave the doorway smelling of nothing: the oil was never the limiting factor, the passive method was. Put the very same oil into an active diffuser and, because the machine now supplies the energy, the whole room fills. Nothing about the fragrance changed. The diffuser changed everything.
The clean verdict
Who owns which job
1. The oil owns character. Rose or coffee or cedar; refined or simple; rich or light up close. That's the fragrance's job.
2. The diffuser owns projection. How far the scent travels and how much of the room can smell it. That's the device's job.
3. Passive vs active is the real divide. A reed is close-range; an active diffuser is room-filling — regardless of the oil.
4. Room size sets which active device. Small room → Safar or Sukoon; large room → Vaayu. Match the machine to the space.
The honest caveat: a finer oil is still worth buying — up close, quality is real, and you'll enjoy it every day. Just don't expect it to project on its own. Pair the scent you love with a diffuser sized to your room, and you get both the character and the reach.
Routing by room size — the honest part
This is where I refuse to oversell, because the whole point of getting the hierarchy right is to buy the correct diffuser, not the biggest one. If yours is a small bedroom or a desk, the waterless SOSA Safar is the honest hero — strong, dry, perfume-like throw you can summon on demand, with no wasted capacity. The Sukoon ultrasonic is the affordable everyday step-up for small-to-medium rooms. Only when the space is genuinely large — an open-plan living room, a villa floor, a reception — does the SOSA Vaayu, with its up-to-1000 m³ coverage and app timer, become the right answer. Putting a Vaayu in a 120 sq ft bedroom would be exactly the mistake this whole way of thinking exists to prevent.
The large-space answer
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999
Waterless cold-air nebulising machine covering up to 1000 m³, with Bluetooth app and timer and no added humidity — ideal for a humid coastal city. This is for a big living room, open-plan space or villa. For a small bedroom, choose the Safar instead; a machine this size would be far too much for a small room.

The honest core
The oil is what you smell. The diffuser is how much of the room smells it.
Projection is decided by the device, not the fragrance. Pick the scent for character, then size the diffuser to your room — Safar or Sukoon for small, Vaayu for large — and the room fills the way you wanted.
Frequently asked
Strong fragrance oil or strong diffuser — which determines how much of the room I can smell?
The diffuser, clearly. How much of the room you can smell is a question of projection, and projection is set by how much energy carries the scent into the air — which is the diffuser's job, not the oil's. A strong oil decides what your room smells of and how rich it is up close; a strong diffuser decides how far that scent travels. If you can smell your fragrance only near the bottle, the fix is a more powerful diffusion method, not a more powerful oil.
Does the fragrance oil affect projection at all?
Only a little, and far less than the diffuser. Some fragrance families are naturally livelier in the air than others, so there is a small difference between scents. But that difference is minor next to the gap between a passive reed and an active diffuser. In practice the oil sets the character and the up-close richness of the scent, while the diffuser sets the reach across the room. For projection, always look at the device first.
Which diffuser should I choose for my room size?
Match the machine to the space. For a small room or bedroom, the waterless SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 gives strong, dry, on-demand projection, and the Sukoon ultrasonic at ₹1,899 is the affordable active option. For a large living room, open-plan space or villa, the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 covers up to 1000 cubic metres with a Bluetooth app and timer. Do not put a large-space machine in a small bedroom — it is oversized for the room and a waste of money. Size the diffuser to the space and it will project properly.
If I love an expensive fragrance, is buying it wasted without a strong diffuser?
Not wasted, but its strength won't reach across the room in a passive reed. A finer, more concentrated oil genuinely smells better and lasts longer up close, so it is worth having for that. It simply cannot project on its own — it needs an active diffuser to carry it. The best of both is to run a fragrance you love through a diffuser sized to your room: the oil gives the character, the diffuser gives the reach. Pairing a good scent with the right machine is where you get both quality and projection.
Size the diffuser to the room
Projection is the diffuser's job — so choose the right one for your space.
