Top notes flash off, and a home scent is what remains
Every composition has three movements. The top is small, volatile molecules such as citrus and light aromatics: bright, immediate and gone within minutes. The heart carries florals, tea and spice for an hour or two. The base holds sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, amber, resins and musks, which are heavy, slow to evaporate and still perceptible long after everything above them has left. For a person wearing perfume, the top matters because it is the first impression on somebody passing. For a home, the top is almost irrelevant, because nobody is there for the first five minutes and the space is being scented continuously. That is the whole reason a signature should sit low and woody rather than bright and fresh, and it is why a room spray impresses at the trigger and disappoints by the time you sit down.

Fatigue - why you cannot judge your own home
Receptors adapt in minutes, so residents are the worst witnesses
Olfactory adaptation is fast and complete: hold a constant odour in the air and the signal from it drops away within minutes. Guests walking in from outside get the full impression; you, having lived in it since morning, get nothing. Two rules follow. First, calibrate only from the doorway after twenty minutes outside, judging the first three seconds. Second, distrust the recurring feeling that the fragrance has faded and needs to be raised or replaced. It has not faded. This one mechanism explains most over-scented homes and most abandoned signatures, and knowing about it is worth more than any product recommendation on this page.

A perfume is designed to be encountered briefly: someone passes you, gets a few seconds of it, and moves on, so it can afford to be assertive. A home is inhabited. Your family is in that air for ten hours a day and your guests for three, which means the correct intensity is dramatically lower than anything you would wear. The target is simple: clearly present in the first three seconds of walking in, unremarkable within five minutes, and never a factor in whether someone wants to stay in the room.
