Yes — and I say that almost every time someone asks. The instinct to hold reeds back to "make it last" is understandable, but in a living room it quietly cheats you out of the fragrance you already bought.
Quick answer
Use all the reeds. A living room is large and open, so it wants full throw — every stick in the box.
The reeds are the strength control. All of them = strongest, most even scent. Holding some back is only for small, enclosed rooms.
Want it to last longer? Choose a 130ml bottle or keep a refill — not fewer reeds.
The short version
Short answer: Yes — all of them. A big open room is exactly where you use the full set.
Here is the habit I see most often, and it comes from a good place. Someone buys a reed diffuser, notices there are eight sticks in the box, and thinks: if I use four now, the bottle lasts twice as long. It is thrifty logic — and it is the one mistake that makes people quietly disappointed with reeds. Because the reeds are not packaging; they are the mechanism. Each one is a length of porous rattan that wicks the oil up and releases it into the air. Half the reeds means roughly half the surface evaporating, which means a faint, slow scent that a living room's big volume of air swallows almost entirely.
So in a living room the answer is simple: use them all. This is the largest, most open room most of us try to scent, and it dilutes fragrance far more than a bathroom or a bedroom does. You want everything a single bottle can give it. Holding reeds back in a living room is like buying a lamp and only screwing in half the bulb to save electricity — technically it lasts longer, but it is not doing the job you wanted.
The SOSA principle
Reeds aren't spares to ration — they're the engine. A living room runs best with all of them in.
Saving reeds saves nothing you actually want. If longevity is the goal, buy a bigger bottle or a refill — never dim the fragrance you already paid for.

Using all reeds empties the bottle a little faster — the answer is a 130ml or a refill, not rationing the sticks.

When to keep a couple back — and when not to
There is exactly one situation where holding reeds back is right, and it is the opposite of a living room: a small, enclosed space. In a bathroom, a study nook or on a wardrobe shelf, the air is confined and a full set can turn heavy — there, two or three reeds is plenty. If your "living room" is genuinely tiny, a converted balcony seating corner say, you can fine-tune by removing a reed or two. But that is fine-tuning, not the rule. The rule for a normal living room is all in.
And what if you have used every reed, fanned them out wide, placed the bottle near a walkway or an AC vent so the air carries the scent, flipped the sticks weekly — and it still feels light? Then, honestly, you have reached the edge of what one reed can do, and no amount of reed-rearranging will change it. This is not a failure; it is a coverage limit. The graceful answers are two: put a second reed at the far end of the room so the scent meets in the middle, or bring in a powered diffuser. A Sukoon handles a mid-size room, and for a large or open-plan floor the waterless SOSA Vaayu carries one even signature across the whole space — with no added humidity, which matters in our coastal cities. A lovely pairing is a reed as the always-on base note plus a Vaayu or Sukoon doing the heavy lifting; you get the reed's soft constancy and the machine's reach.
"Rationing reeds to make a bottle last is like dimming a lamp to save the bulb. In a living room, put them all in and let it shine."

One honest reminder to close: even a full set of reeds crowns clean air — it does not stand in for it. Air the room daily, keep the sofas and rugs fresh, and let the reed add the last, pleasant layer. Do that, use every reed, and a well-chosen SOSA scent will hold a soft, cared-for note in your living room with nothing to plug in and nothing to remember.
Frequently asked
Should I use all the reeds in a living-room diffuser?
Yes. A living room is a large, open space, so you want the full throw a single bottle can produce, and that means every reed in the box. The reeds are the diffuser's strength control — using all of them gives the strongest, most even scent. Holding some back only makes sense in a small, enclosed room where a full set would be overpowering.
Is it wasteful to use all the reeds at once?
No, it is how the diffuser is meant to be used in a large room. More reeds evaporate a little more oil, so the bottle empties somewhat sooner, but you are getting the fragrance you paid for rather than a faint version of it. If you want the full-set strength to last longer, choose a 130ml bottle or keep a
refill on hand — that is the right fix, not fewer reeds.
When should I not use all the reeds?
Only in small, enclosed spaces — a bathroom, a study nook, a wardrobe shelf — where a full set can become heavy in the confined air. There you might use two or three reeds. A living room is the opposite situation: open and large, so it takes everything the bottle offers. If anything, a big living room needs more than one bottle can give.
I used all the reeds and the living room still smells faint — why?
That is the reed telling you the room is bigger than one bottle can cover, not that the reeds are the problem. Make sure they are fanned out wide and the bottle sits near gentle airflow, and flip the sticks weekly. If it is still light, add a second reed at the far end, or step up to a
Sukoon for a mid-size room or the waterless
SOSA Vaayu for a large or open-plan one.
Does using more reeds make it overpowering in a living room?
Very rarely, because a living room's volume of air dilutes the scent to a comfortable level. Overpowering is a small-room problem. If a full set ever does feel a touch strong in a compact living room, remove one or two reeds to fine-tune — but most living rooms want the whole set and then some.
Put them all in
Use the whole set — that's how a living room is meant to smell.
A SOSA alcohol-free reed diffuser gives its fullest, most even scent with every reed in. Size up to the 130ml for a bigger room, or add a Sukoon or the waterless Vaayu when one reed can't reach the far corners.
