Most brand books that mention scent say one line about it, usually a fragrance name and an adjective. That line is unenforceable, and six months later two branches smell different and nobody can point to the page that was broken.
Quick answers — read this first
Should a clinic's signature fragrance sit in the brand guidelines? Yes, and for the same reason the logo clear-space rule is in there: so that a decision made once does not get remade weekly by whoever is on the front desk. But the entry has to be written properly. A line that only names a fragrance is a preference, not a guideline. The version that works names six things - the profile, the machine class, the intensity setting, the run hours, the zones it applies to, and the rooms it must never enter - and it takes about half a page.

What is the part people always leave out? The exclusions. Almost every scent entry I am shown describes where the fragrance goes and says nothing about where it does not, which means the rule is silent exactly where it matters most. Procedure and graft rooms, post-procedure and recovery areas, and photography or documentation rooms are unscented, permanently and by name. Not lightly scented. Write them into the guideline as a list, because a list is what someone reads when a new branch manager wonders whether a diffuser would be nice in the recovery lounge.

Does this cost anything to do? The document costs nothing. The hardware is one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 per site past roughly 1,500 sq ft, or one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 where the patient-facing side is a single reception under about 750 sq ft. Write the entry first: the half-page is worth more than the machine, because the machine without the page drifts within a quarter.
The short answer
Short answer: yes, but only if the entry does real work. Name the profile, the machine class, the intensity setting, the run hours, the zones it applies to and - critically - the rooms it must never enter, which are the procedure, recovery and photography rooms. A line that names only a fragrance is unenforceable. One Vaayu (₹11,999) per site past 1,500 sq ft, or a Sukoon (₹1,899) below about 750 sq ft.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) named in the guideline by class and mounting position, or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) named as the small-site alternative so a branch manager is not left improvising.
Next step: send us the draft entry and a floor plan of one branch, and we will mark the zones, the exclusions and an honest starting intensity you can write into the page - Ask for a clinic scenting plan.
What a scent entry in a clinic brand book has to containThe profile: one clean, dry, cool register, named onceThe machine class and where it is mountedThe intensity setting, and who is allowed to change itThe run hours, tied to clinic hours and nothing elseThe rooms it must never enter, listed by name
Four of those lines are easy to write. The fifth is the one that always gets left out, and a guideline is only as strong as the exclusions in it.

Straight answer
Should a hair transplant clinic's signature fragrance be written into its brand guidelines?
Yes, on one condition: the entry has to be written as a specification rather than as a mood. The version I am usually shown is a single line - a fragrance name, a word like understated or fresh, sometimes a photograph of a candle - and it cannot be enforced by anybody, because it does not tell a branch manager what to do on a Tuesday morning. Here is what a usable entry contains. One: the profile, stated once. For a hair clinic that is clean, dry and cool - white tea, a dry light citrus, or soft woods - and the guideline should say explicitly that no second fragrance is used anywhere in the clinic, including reeds on a desk or a plug-in in a washroom. Two: the machine class and where it is mounted. Name it by specification, not just by product: a waterless cold-air unit on the reception air path, wall or HVAC mounted, such as a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, with a SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 named as the alternative for a site whose patient-facing area is under about 750 sq ft. Three: the intensity setting. The rule is the lowest setting at which the profile is detectable when you walk in from outside, recorded per site on a sheet, with the key-lock engaged and one named person allowed to change it. Four: the run hours - clinic hours only, on the timer, never overnight and never on closed days. Five: the zones it applies to: entrance, reception, waiting lounge and corridors. Six, and the one that is always missing: the rooms it must never enter, listed by name - procedure and graft rooms, post-procedure and recovery areas, photography and documentation rooms, and any room where a patient is undressed, mid-treatment or waiting on a result. Unscented, not lightly scented. Consultation cabins get whatever faint drift arrives from reception and never a source of their own. The entry should also say what it does not claim: this is an interior decision with no clinical or therapeutic claim of any kind, it sits alongside cleaning and ventilation rather than instead of them and is never used to cover another smell, and nobody can promise it moves any number the practice runs on. Add two override lines: if a patient objects, staff reduce or switch off immediately, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides the guideline in their own room. That is half a page and it costs nothing to write. Ask for a clinic scenting plan and we will draft the zones and exclusions against your own floor plan.
Yes, but write it as a specification: profile, machine class, intensity, run hours, zones covered and - the line always missing - the rooms it must never enter. Procedure, recovery and photography rooms are unscented by name, permanently.
Name the class, not only the product. One SOSA Vaayu - waterless, adjustable intensity, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and a key-lock, which is what makes a written setting hold. ₹11,999 per site. For sites under about 750 sq ft the guideline should name the Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead.

The machine, by clinic size

A guideline should name a class of machine and a size rule rather than a single product, so that a smaller site is not left buying the wrong thing to comply with the page. These are the two the rule usually resolves to.

SOSA Vaayu
The guideline machine for sites past about 1,500 sq ft
SOSA Vaayu
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. Adjustable intensity, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, under 38dB, auto-stop and key-lock, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable. The key-lock is the clause that makes a written intensity setting mean something a month later.
From ₹11,999
SOSA Sukoon
The small-site clause - under about 750 sq ft
SOSA Sukoon
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml hotel-inspired fragrances. Name it in the guideline so a small branch has a compliant option. Without that clause, a manager either over-buys or improvises with whatever the supermarket sells.
From ₹1,899
SOSA Vaayu
The machine class a clinic brand guideline should describe
SOSA Vaayu
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified - electrical and compliance marks, not medical approvals. Made in India.

The three things the entry must fix

A scent entry earns its place by settling three arguments before they happen. If it does not settle these, it is decoration.

1
Write a setting, not an adjective
Nobody can follow the instruction fresh but not overpowering
The words that appear in most scent guidelines - fresh, subtle, luxurious, understated - are not instructions, because two people reading them will set two different levels and both will believe they complied. Replace them with something a person can act on: the lowest setting at which the profile is detectable when you walk in from the street, recorded as a number on the branch sheet, with the key-lock engaged afterwards. Add the audit rule in the same line: someone walks in from outside once a quarter and checks. If a patient can identify the fragrance, it is too strong - that sentence is worth putting into the guideline verbatim, because it is the only test a non-specialist can apply.
Tip: Write the recorded setting on a sticker inside the machine's lid as well as in the document. Documents get filed; stickers get seen.

2
List the rooms by name
The exclusions are the part that has to be unambiguous
A guideline that describes where fragrance goes and stays silent on where it does not has left the important half open. Write the list: procedure and graft rooms, post-procedure and recovery areas, photography and documentation rooms, and any space where a patient is undressed, mid-treatment or waiting on a result. State that these are unscented rather than lightly scented, and that the reason is environmental rather than clinical - post-operative scalp is an open wound and those rooms are treated as clinical space throughout. Add the consultation clause: cabins may carry a faint drift from reception, never a source of their own, and never a level above the reception they open off. This is the page a new branch manager will actually need.
Tip: Put the exclusions above the inclusions on the page. What gets read first is what gets remembered.

3
State what the guideline does not claim
A brand book is exactly where an overclaim gets copied everywhere
Whatever the scent entry says will be quoted by a marketing team, a website writer and eventually a hoarding, so the entry itself should contain its own limits. Three sentences do it. This is an interior and hospitality decision and makes no clinical or therapeutic claim of any kind. It works alongside cleaning, ventilation and infection control, never instead of them, and is never used to cover another smell. And no one can promise that ambient fragrance moves any number the practice runs on, so no material produced from this guideline should imply that it does. Add that fragrance sensitivity is real, that no ambient product is safe for every individual, and that a patient objection is settled by switching off rather than by explaining.

The SOSA principle
A brand guideline that names a fragrance and stops there is a preference. A guideline becomes real at the line that says which rooms the fragrance is never allowed into.
Everything a scent entry needs to survive a year is written on half a page, and half of that half is a list of exclusions.
SOSA Vaayu
Named by class in the document: SOSA Vaayu, waterless cold-air, wall or HVAC mounted on the reception air path, adjustable intensity. ₹11,999 per site.

The entry itself, line by line

This is the entry as I would write it for a hair clinic brand book, and it is short enough to sit on one page beside the colour rules.

The SOSA plan
The ambient scent entry, line by line
The line What to do
Profile
One clean, dry, cool register - white tea, a dry light citrus or soft woods. No second fragrance anywhere in the clinic, including reeds and plug-ins.
SOSA VaayuMachine and mount
One waterless cold-air unit per site on the reception air path, wall or HVAC mounted. Sites under about 750 sq ft use the small-site alternative.
SOSA SukoonIntensity
The lowest setting at which the profile is detectable on walking in from outside. Recorded per site, key-lock engaged, one named person may change it.
Run hours
Clinic hours only, on the timer. Never overnight, never on closed days, never raised for an event.
Zones covered
Entrance, reception, waiting lounge and corridors. Consultation cabins take drift only and never a source of their own.
Rooms it must never enter
Procedure and graft rooms, post-procedure and recovery, photography and documentation. Unscented, not lightly scented, permanently.

Once there is more than one site, the guideline needs a written procedure behind it, and that is set out in how to standardise ambient fragrance across a multi-city chain. If you are still choosing the profile the entry will name, the reasoning is in how to choose a signature scent for a hair restoration clinic. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

SOSA Vaayu
The clause that keeps the setting: A key-lock, so the recorded intensity is still the intensity three months later. ₹11,999.
One page, one setting, one machine per site
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 has adjustable intensity, timers and a key-lock - the three features that let a written guideline survive contact with a busy front desk.

I have read a lot of clinic brand books. The scent page is usually the prettiest one in the document and the only one nobody could follow.

The SOSA hair-clinic specification

A guideline should name two options and a size rule, so that every site has something compliant to buy. These are the two that cover almost every hair clinic in the country. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Write the entry as a specification, put the exclusions above the inclusions, and record the intensity per site rather than describing it in adjectives. The guideline should state its own limits: this is an interior decision with no clinical or therapeutic claim of any kind; it works alongside cleaning and ventilation, never instead of them, and is never used to cover another smell; and no one can promise ambient scent moves any number the practice runs on. Bulk terms, corporate invoicing, maintenance contracts and installation are not published by SOSA and should be confirmed before a multi-site order. A note from Sonal

Brand teams ask me for a fragrance and a paragraph. What they need is a specification and a list, and the difference shows up about four months later when one branch smells of something the founder never chose. The question is never really whether scent belongs in the guidelines. Of course it does - it is as much a brand decision as the paper stock. The question is whether the entry that goes in is one anybody can follow without ringing head office, and most of them are not.

The substance of a good entry is boring, which is why it works. One profile, named once. One machine class and where it is mounted. One intensity rule expressed as a test rather than an adjective, recorded per site because the same setting behaves differently in two buildings. Run hours tied to clinic hours. Then the zones, and then - the part I would put first if I were designing the page - the rooms the fragrance is never allowed into: procedure, recovery, photography, and anywhere a patient is mid-treatment or waiting to be told something. Unscented means unscented.

On hardware, name a class and a size rule. Past about 1,500 sq ft that resolves to one Vaayu at ₹11,999 per site, with the key-lock on. Under 750 sq ft it is a Sukoon at ₹1,899, and the guideline should say so rather than leaving a small branch to guess. Bulk and corporate terms are not something SOSA publishes, so confirm those with us rather than writing them into the document. And whatever else the page says, it should not promise the fragrance does anything to the business, because nobody can. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Should a hair transplant clinic's signature fragrance be part of its brand guidelines?
Yes, provided the entry is written as a specification rather than a mood. A usable entry names six things: the profile, the machine class and its mounting position, the intensity setting and who may change it, the run hours, the zones it applies to, and the rooms it must never enter. A line that names only a fragrance cannot be followed by a branch manager and will not survive the first busy quarter.
What is the most important line in the entry?
The exclusions. Procedure and graft rooms, post-procedure and recovery areas, and photography or documentation rooms are unscented rather than lightly scented, listed by name, permanently. Consultation cabins take only whatever faint drift arrives from reception and never a source of their own. Most scent entries describe where fragrance goes and are silent about where it must not, which leaves the important half of the rule unwritten.
How do I write an intensity rule that people can follow?
Turn the adjective into a test and a number. The rule is the lowest setting at which the profile is detectable when you walk in from outside, recorded per site on a sheet, with the key-lock engaged and one named person permitted to change it. Add the sentence that if a patient can identify the fragrance it is too strong. That is something a non-specialist can apply without ringing head office.
Should the guideline say what ambient scent does for the business?
No, and it should say the opposite. A brand book gets quoted by marketing, so put the limits in the entry itself: this is an interior decision with no clinical or therapeutic claim, it works alongside cleaning and ventilation rather than instead of them, it is never used to cover another smell, and no one can promise it moves any number the practice runs on. That sentence will save someone from writing a claim you cannot support.
Which machine should the guideline name for a chain?
Name a class and a size rule rather than a single product. Past roughly 1,500 sq ft it resolves to one waterless cold-air unit per site such as a SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999, wall or HVAC mounted on the reception air path with the key-lock engaged. Below about 750 sq ft, name a SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,899. Bulk pricing, corporate invoicing and maintenance terms are not published and should be confirmed with SOSA.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation.
