Specifically, the root system of Chrysopogon zizanioides - khus grass - which has grown in India for thousands of years. You may know it without realising it. The cooling effect was never folklore. Khus roots release a complex set of sesquiterpene compounds when they meet moisture and warm air - the same compounds that, when steam-distilled, produce vetiver oil.
