Founder Diaries · Attar Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 10 min read Updated September 2026
This is the one question in this whole cluster where I can answer without hedging, because it is not really a question about taste. A collection of large spray bottles has a shape, and the shape has a hole in it that has nothing to do with which scents are in it. You have already spotted the hole. The rest of this page is about what actually fills it and what does not.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the difference between an attar and a normal perfume? An attar is alcohol-free concentrated fragrance oil applied to the skin with a roll-on, usually at the wrist. A conventional perfume is a composition diluted in alcohol and sprayed into the air. The oil opens more quietly, sits closer to the skin and is dosed by the wearer rather than by the atomiser.

Is a small attar a good gift for someone who owns large perfume bottles? It adds a format rather than competing for a slot. Most collections are 50ML and 100ML sprays, which are house objects - they live on a shelf and get used before leaving. A 3ML roll-on goes in a pocket or a small bag and can be applied anywhere, which is a different job. The SOSA set is ₹1,055 for three.

Does the scent still have to suit them? Yes, and format does not rescue a register they dislike. Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani are rose, oud, sandalwood and saffron built for evenings. The format argument is real, but it is an argument for a category, not a licence to ignore what the person actually wears.
The short answer
Short answer: A collection of 50 and 100ML sprays is missing a category rather than a scent - concentrated oil in a 3ML roll-on is a different object with different uses, which is the one thing a full shelf cannot supply itself.
The pick: the three-attar set at ₹1,055 where they already wear rose, oud or heavy florals - and three self-chosen 3ML singles from ₹1,153 where they do not.
Honest note: the set is fixed and all three scents sit in one register, so it is depth rather than contrast. Adaa, the one bright scent, is not in it.
The trio, and the alternative - at a glanceThe trio is one register: rose, oud, sandalwood. Three eveningsFixed set ₹1,055 · Ameeri, Nawaab, Mastani · Adaa not includedWant contrast? Three chosen 3ML from ₹1,153 - three boxesAlcohol-free oil · worn at the wrist
SOSA's three-attar set is a fixed pairing of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani at Rs 1,055 for three 3ML bottles. All three sit in the same register - rose, oud, sandalwood and heavy florals, built for evenings. If what you want is contrast rather than depth, the route is three 3ML singles chosen yourself, from Rs 1,153, which is the only way to include Adaa, the one bright scent in the range. Those arrive as three boxes rather than one gift set.
Straight answer
Does a small attar add anything to a collection of expensive spray bottles?
Yes, and this is the clearest case in the whole cluster.

The direct answer: the three-attar set at ₹1,055 for three 3ML bottles - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani.

What makes it functionally different, precisely. An attar is alcohol-free concentrated oil rolled onto the wrist. A 100ML designer bottle is a diluted composition sprayed into the air. Four practical consequences follow. It travels - 3ML fits a pocket, a jacket, a small bag, and there is nothing to decant or leak. It can be applied where spraying is awkward, which covers offices, shared cars, trains and most of the time you are already dressed and do not want a cloud. The wearer doses it exactly, one pass rather than two. And because it is oil rather than a volatile solution, it opens quietly and stays close instead of filling a room.

The part that is not an argument. None of the above makes the scent right. If your friend wears nothing but bright citrus, three rich evening attars are still three rich evening attars, and a clever format will not fix that. All three set scents share oudh, sandalwood and rose - they are one register, not three. Adaa, the bergamot and green cardamom attar at ₹379, is the bright one and it is not in the set.

If you want the format without the guess. One 6ML of a single scent is ₹669 to ₹699, and a solid perfume tin at ₹500 is another format almost no spray collection holds - balm in metal, nothing to spill. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: audit the collection by format rather than by scent, and the gap is obvious - everything on that shelf is sprayed, and nothing on it is oil in something pocket-sized.
The three-attar set is ₹1,055 for three 3ML bottles, ₹1,859 at 6ML. It is a fixed pairing - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani - and all three sit in the same register, so it is depth rather than contrast. Worth knowing before you order: Adaa is not in it.
from ₹1,055

Auditing a collection by format instead of by scent

Three things separate a compact oil from a large spray, and only the third one is about how it smells.

1
Where it can go
A 100ML bottle is furniture, a 3ML roll-on is luggage
Large bottles stay at home. That is not a criticism, it is what they are designed for - they are heavy, they are glass, and nobody carries one. It means the entire collection does one job: getting scented before leaving the house. A 3ML roll-on does the other job. It goes in a bag for a wedding, a long day, an evening that follows an afternoon, a flight. Somebody with eight large bottles has that first job covered eight times over and the second one not at all, which is a real gap and a cheap one to fill.
Tip: Count the bottles that leave the house. On most collections the number is zero.
2
How it is applied
Rolled on, not sprayed into the air
A spray commits you to a dose and a cloud. An attar is placed - one pass at the wrist, two if you want more, applied in a lift or at a desk without anybody else being involved. That control matters most in exactly the situations a large bottle cannot serve: an office, a shared car, a room where somebody else has already chosen a fragrance. It is also why an attar suits topping up in a way a spray does not.
3
The limit of the argument
Format does not rescue the wrong register
I would rather put this in the middle of the page than the bottom. Everything above is true and none of it makes a rose-oud evening attar the right gift for somebody who wears sharp citrus. The fixed set is one register - rose, sandalwood, saffron, oudh, night jasmine - and a collector will place it within a minute. Use the format argument to justify the category, then check the register separately, because they are two different decisions and only the first one is easy.
Tip: Format decides the category. Register decides whether it gets worn.
The SOSA principle
A shelf of large sprays is not short of scent. It is short of a scent that leaves the house.
That is a gap in format rather than in taste, which is the one kind of gap you can identify from outside somebody's collection.

The category the shelf does not hold

Look at the shape of the collection first - sizes, formats, what actually travels - and only then check that the register fits.

The SOSA attar edit
Filling the format gap in a collection of large bottles
Option Who it suits, and what it costs
They wear rich, warm or floral scents The three-attar set at ₹1,055. Three 3ML oil roll-ons, the format the shelf does not hold.
They wear bright and fresh scents Adaa at ₹379 for 3ML. Same format argument, a register they would actually wear, bought on its own.
You want the format in a size they will finish One 6ML at ₹669 to ₹699. Compact enough to travel, large enough to be used regularly.
They dislike anything applied to skin from a bottle A solid perfume tin at ₹500. Balm in metal - a third format, and nothing to leak.

If the recipient has never worn anything but sprays and you are wondering how that transition actually goes, First attar, lifelong spray wearer covers it properly. Oil at the wrist is the longer answer on what the format change does in practice. The four attars are all available in all three sizes.

Tell us what they already wear
Send us the bottle they have worn for years, or just how they describe it - bright, heavy, sweet, clean. If the fixed set is the wrong register for that person, we will say so and tell you which three to pick instead.
Gift enquiry
This is the one argument in the cluster that does not depend on guessing their taste. A format gap is visible from outside.

The SOSA attar edit

Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free oil worn at the wrist, hand-blended in small batches in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the edit by what you actually know about the person's taste, which is what decides whether a fixed set or three chosen bottles is the right answer.

The SOSA attar edit
Five answers by what you actually know about their taste - from ₹1,055 to ₹1,859
Option Best for What it is, honestly From
The three-attar set, 3ML x 3 They already wear rose, oud or big florals Ameeri, Nawaab, Mastani - one register, three evenings. Fixed: Adaa is not in it ₹1,055
Three chosen 3ML singles You want contrast, not depth Any three of the four, chosen by you. The only route that includes Adaa. Three boxes, not one set ₹1,153
One 12ML of a scent you are sure of You know exactly what they wear A size they finish rather than sample, when guessing is not required ₹1,149
The three-attar set, 6ML x 3 The same three, in a size that lasts Where the trio is right and 3ML would run out too quickly ₹1,859
Solid perfume tin 15g When a roll-on is not right Solid balm in a metal tin - nothing to spill, nothing to leak in a bag ₹500

Four honest notes. The three-attar set is fixed - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, in one size tier at a time. Adaa, the bergamot and cardamom one, is not in it, so if the brighter style is what the person wears, that means buying Adaa separately. All three trio scents sit in the same register - rose, oud, sandalwood and heavy florals - so the set is depth rather than contrast; if contrast is the point, choose three 3ML singles yourself and know that they arrive as three boxes rather than one gift set, because there is no build-your-own set on the store. SOSA's attars are alcohol-free oil worn at the wrist; the designer-inspired line is an alcohol-based spray and a different product entirely, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any fragrance house it names. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The hardest fragrance gift is not the one where you know nothing. It is the one where you know just enough. You can name the bottle they have worn for six years. You also know that buying it again is not a gift, it is a refill - and that buying something wildly different is a coin toss with your money on it.

So people reach for a set, and most fragrance sets quietly mislead. They are sold as exploration when they are really one house's single idea, broken into three bottles. I would rather tell you what ours actually is. Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani are three evenings, not three directions. Rose, oud, sandalwood, saffron, night jasmine. If the person you are buying for already lives in that register, the set is genuinely good and the discount is real. If they wear something bright and fresh, it is the wrong set, and no amount of my writing changes that.

The answer in that case is not a different set. It is three bottles you pick yourself - and yes, that costs about a hundred rupees more than the fixed three, and yes, they arrive in three boxes rather than one. I would rather you knew both of those things before you ordered than after. Adaa is the only bright one we make, and it is not in the set. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

Is an attar genuinely different from the perfumes in a collection, or just smaller?
Genuinely different. It is alcohol-free concentrated oil rolled onto the skin rather than a diluted composition sprayed into the air, so it opens more quietly, sits closer to the wearer and is dosed by hand. A 3ML roll-on also travels in a way a 100ML bottle does not.
Will somebody with expensive perfume think a ₹1,055 set is cheap?
It is not being offered as a rival to a ₹12,000 bottle and should not be framed as one. It is three 3ML bottles in a format their collection does not contain. That is the honest pitch and it holds regardless of what else is on the shelf.
Does the scent still need to match what they wear?
Yes. Format is a reason to consider the category, not a reason to ignore taste. Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani are rose, oud, sandalwood and saffron built for evenings. If the person wears nothing but fresh citrus, the format is right and the register is wrong, and Adaa at ₹379 is the better starting point.
How long does 3ML of attar last in use?
It depends entirely on how heavily somebody applies it, so any number quoted at you is a guess. What can be said is that an attar is applied by the pass rather than by the spray, so the wearer controls the amount precisely, and 3ML is a size intended for trying a scent rather than living with it.
What other compact formats are worth considering?
Solid perfume in a 15g tin at ₹500 or ₹549 - balm in metal, nothing to spill and nothing to leak in a bag. Very few spray collections contain one, so it fills the same format gap by a different route, and it is a sensible second gift alongside a set.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the gifting advice applies to any brand. SOSA does not sort fragrance by the gender of the wearer - every scent is recommended here on what a person has said they like.

SOSA attars, specified: alcohol-free concentrated fragrance oil in a roll-on bottle, applied at the wrist rather than sprayed. Four scents: Adaa (bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk - the one bright scent in the range), Ameeri (Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh), Mastani (night-blooming jasmine, damask rose, oudh) and Nawaab (white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron). Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab share oudh, sandalwood and rose materials and sit in one register; Adaa is the outlier.

Prices verified 28 September 2026: 3ML ₹379 (Adaa) / ₹385 (Ameeri) / ₹389 (Mastani) / ₹399 (Nawaab); 6ML ₹669 / ₹679 / ₹685 / ₹699; 12ML ₹1,149 / ₹1,165 / ₹1,179 / ₹1,199.
