The right time to think about scenting a new store is now, while you are still writing the budget. The right time to buy it is much later, after the things that actually decide what your room smells like have been designed and paid for. Those two facts are not in conflict.
Quick answers — read this first
Should ambient scenting be included in my interior budget? Yes, as a line item - and no, as an early purchase. Writing it into the budget now means two things get decided while they are still cheap: a socket at mounting height if you might ever run a machine, and a sequence that puts scent last rather than treating it as a launch-week afterthought. But the money should leave your hands late. Ventilation, stockroom isolation and storage decisions change what a footwear store smells like far more than any diffuser does, and they have to be right before a signature goes on top of them.

How big a line should it be in an opening budget? Smaller than most owners assume, and sized by the room rather than by the fit-out. Reeds are ₹749 to ₹1,349 each and need no power or installation. The Sukoon is ₹1,899 and covers one zone of roughly 270 to 320 sq ft. The Vaayu is ₹11,999 and draws 5W, roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour trading day, and it is correctly specified from about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor. What we will not do is give you a monthly fragrance running cost, because usage depends on intensity, hours and the room.

What should come before scenting in the budget? Three things, in this order. Ventilation and extraction: real air changes, and a plan for the entrance. Stockroom isolation: a self-closing door, extraction where the shell allows it, and ideally the stockroom kept slightly negative in pressure to the shop floor, because in most footwear stores the loudest smell in the building starts behind that door. Storage and packaging: where boxes live, how they are handled, how fast stock rotates. Get those three funded properly and the room will smell better than any scenting line could make it. Then add the signature.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes as a line item, no as an early purchase. Writing it into the budget gets the sequence and the socket decided while they are still cheap. Buying it early wastes it, because ventilation, stockroom isolation and storage decisions change a footwear store's smell far more than a diffuser does. Plan it now, size it by the room, and spend it last.
The pick: For most opening stores, a reed: Mountain Breeze (₹849) for leather and dark wood, or the Fresh & Grounded duo (₹1,548) across two areas. A machine only from about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor.
Next step: Send the layout and the ventilation drawings and we will tell you what to put in the budget and what to leave until later - ask for a store scenting plan.
In the budget now. Bought last, on purposePlan it at budget stage so it is not an afterthoughtBuy it after ventilation and the stockroom are doneStorage and box handling change more than a diffuserSize the line by the room, not by the fit-out costA socket at mounting height costs nothing on a drawing
Scenting belongs in an opening budget as a planned line and at the end of the spending order. Planning it early is free; buying it early is money spent before the room is ready to hold it.
Straight answer
Should ambient scenting be included in the interior budget for a new shoe store?
Yes as a line, no as an early purchase - and the distinction is worth holding onto, because the two halves fail in different ways. Put it in the budget now. Not because the number is large, but because two decisions become expensive the moment they are late. The first is power and mounting: if there is any chance you will run a machine, a socket at mounting height on the electrical layout costs nothing at drawing stage and a great deal once the walls are closed and the joinery is in. The second is sequence. A scenting line written into the budget arrives as a planned decision; one left out arrives in launch week as somebody buying whatever is available, which is how stores end up with a level nobody chose. Now the harder half: buy it last. A footwear store's smell is mostly made of its own stock and its own air, so the things that genuinely decide it sit far above scenting in the order. Ventilation first - real air changes, extraction where you need it, and a thought-through entrance, because a door onto a street or a mall corridor is a smell decision as much as a temperature one. Stockroom isolation second, and in most stores this is the single biggest change available: a self-closing door, extraction where the shell allows it, and keeping the stockroom slightly negative in pressure to the shop floor, because the highest concentration of boxes, adhesive and new rubber in the building lives behind that door and arrives on the floor every time it opens. Storage and packaging third - where boxes live, how they are stacked and how quickly stock moves. Only after those three does a signature have anything sensible to sit on. Fragrance laid over an unsolved source gives you a room that smells of both, and no product removes, neutralises or absorbs an odour. On the size of the line: reeds are ₹749 to ₹1,349, the Sukoon is ₹1,899, and the Vaayu is ₹11,999 at 5W - about 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour trading day - correctly specified from roughly 1,500 sq ft of connected floor. I will not give you a monthly fragrance running cost, because usage depends on intensity, hours and the room, and any figure would be invented. And to be explicit: we make no claim that any of this affects sales, conversion, footfall, browsing time, basket size, revenue or what anybody buys. Ask for a store scenting plan and send the layout with the stockroom marked.
Write the line in now so the socket and the sequence get decided. Spend it last, after ventilation, stockroom isolation and storage are settled.
If your opening floor is genuinely large - about 1,500 sq ft connected and up - budget one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 and a socket at mounting height. Waterless, 5W, under 38dB, wall or HVAC mounted, key-locked.

The line item, by size

Sizing honesty for an opening budget, because this is where over-specification happens. Under 300 sq ft, one reed - a machine would be over-specified and you would run it on its lowest setting forever. Between 300 and 750, reeds by zone or the duo across two areas. Between 750 and 1,500 it turns on connectedness and control. The Vaayu is correctly specified from roughly 1,500 sq ft of connected retail floor.

SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
The usual opening line item
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar - the dry-wood register that sits under leather and extends it. No power, no installation, nothing for the contractor to coordinate, and it can be bought in the last week before opening without any consequence for the programme. From ₹849 in 50ml, ₹1,349 in 130ml.
From ₹849
SOSA Fresh & Grounded Reed Duo
Two areas from opening day
SOSA Fresh & Grounded Reed Duo
Morning Freshness and Mountain Breeze together at ₹1,548 for 2 x 50ml. If your new store has a men's and a women's side, or a display floor and a quieter trying area, a duo lets the two read differently on day one without either becoming a separate brand.
From ₹1,548
SOSA Vaayu
Only from about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor
SOSA Vaayu
₹11,999, waterless, rated to 1000m³, under 38dB, 5W, wall or HVAC mountable with adjustable intensity, trading-hour timers and a key-lock. If this is on your budget, add one line above it: a socket at mounting height on the electrical layout, decided before the walls close.
From ₹11,999
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
Budget the socket at the same time as the machine
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar reed diffuser in 50ml (₹849) and 130ml (₹1,349). Passive - no power, no noise, no maintenance beyond turning the reeds.

Three things that decide it

Three budget decisions, in the order they should be taken.

1
First, fund the air
Ventilation and extraction decide more about the smell than the scenting line ever will
This is the least glamorous line in an opening budget and the one that changes the room most. A footwear store is full of material that smells - leather, rubber, EVA, adhesive, cardboard, tissue - and on top of that a new fit-out is off-gassing paint, MDF and carpet for weeks after handover. Real air changes are what move that along, and no amount of fragrance substitutes for them. Fund extraction where the shell allows it, think about the entrance rather than treating it as a hole in the wall, and accept that a brand-new store smelling of glue is usually a ventilation-and-time problem rather than a fragrance one. Every rupee spent here does more for the room than the same rupee spent on scenting, and I would rather you moved money in that direction if the two ever compete.
Tip: if the ventilation line is being cut, cut the scenting line first. It is the cheaper mistake by far.
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
Once the air is funded, Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is the register that sits under leather and dark wood.
See SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser →
2
Second, isolate the stockroom and plan storage
The loudest source in the building is behind a door you are about to specify
In most footwear stores the strongest smell starts in the stockroom and travels onto the shop floor every time the door opens. At budget stage that is a cheap problem and after opening it is an expensive one, so specify it now: a self-closing door, extraction where you can run it, and ideally an arrangement that keeps the stockroom slightly negative in pressure to the floor so air moves in rather than out. Then plan storage properly - where cartons live, how high they stack, whether tissue and packaging are handled in view of customers, and how quickly stock rotates through. These are joinery and layout decisions with a smell consequence, which is exactly why they belong in the interior budget rather than in an operations discussion six months later. A signature scent added over an unsolved stockroom gives you a room that smells of both.
Tip: mark the stockroom door on the drawing and ask what happens to the air behind it every time it swings.
SOSA Fresh & Grounded Reed Duo
With sources handled, the Fresh & Grounded duo at ₹1,548 covers two areas from opening day.
See SOSA Fresh & Grounded Reed Duo →
3
Third, write the scenting line - small, and last
Plan it now, buy it late, and size it by the room rather than the fit-out
Now the line itself. Reeds are ₹749 to ₹1,349 and need nothing from your contractor. The Sukoon is ₹1,899 for one zone of roughly 270 to 320 sq ft, though being water-based it is best kept away from leather stock and stacked boxes. The Vaayu is ₹11,999, draws 5W - roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour trading day - and belongs from about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor. If a machine is even possible, budget the socket at mounting height at the same time. What I will not put in your spreadsheet is a monthly fragrance cost, because usage depends on intensity, run hours and the room. And I will not put a return beside it either: we make no claim that scenting affects sales, conversion, footfall, browsing time, basket size, revenue or what anybody buys.
Tip: budget the socket even if you buy a reed. An empty socket is cheap; a chased wall after opening is not.
SOSA Vaayu
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 - budget it only where the connected floor genuinely reaches about 1,500 sq ft.
See SOSA Vaayu →
The SOSA principle
Planning scenting early is free. Buying it early is money spent before the room is ready to hold a signature.
Ventilation, the stockroom door and where the boxes live will all beat a diffuser on the day you open.
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
The usual opening line: Mountain Breeze - Himalayan pine, sage and cedar - needs no power, no installation and no contractor. From ₹849.

Scenting, last
A reed from ₹749, the duo at ₹1,548, or the Vaayu at ₹11,999 with a socket at mounting height. Planned at budget stage, bought after everything above is done.

The drawing-stage version of this is answered in whether your architect should plan scent-machine placement before opening, and the numbers themselves are in how much a premium footwear retailer should budget for ambient fragrance. Reeds and the duo for a boutique floor, the Vaayu once the connected area genuinely reaches about 1,500 sq ft, with a socket planned at drawing stage. Under 750 sq ft we would budget a reed and say plainly that a machine is over-specified. Fragrance here is a brand and interior decision, and we make no claim that it affects sales, conversion, footfall, browsing time, basket size, revenue or what anybody buys. It works alongside ventilation, stock rotation and cleaning, never instead of them, and is never used to mask a smell that has a source. We do not publish a monthly fragrance running cost because usage depends on settings, hours and the room. Ask for a store scenting plan.

A note from Sonal

Owners ask me this while the budget is still a spreadsheet, which is the best possible time - and then they usually want to buy something in the same week, which is the worst. Put the line in. Decide the socket. Then leave the money where it is until the ventilation is done, the stockroom door is specified and you know where the cartons are going to live.

I have walked into new stores in launch week where somebody bought a diffuser on the Friday because the room smelled of glue. It does not work, and it is not what the product is for. New adhesive, MDF and carpet fade with air changes and a few weeks; fragrance laid on top of them gives you a room that smells of both. Wait, ventilate, and sign the room when the room is ready.

The limits, plainly. Scenting a new store is an ambience decision, and we make no commercial, therapeutic or medical claim - nothing about sales, footfall, revenue or what a customer buys. It never masks a smell that has a source, and no product removes, neutralises or absorbs an odour. Your judgement and your staff's outranks mine once the store is open. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Should ambient scenting be included in my interior budget?
Yes as a line item, no as an early purchase. Writing it into the budget gets two things decided while they are cheap: a socket at mounting height if a machine is possible, and a sequence that puts scent last. But spend it late, because ventilation, stockroom isolation and storage decisions change what a footwear store smells like far more than a diffuser does.
What should be funded before the scenting line?
Ventilation and extraction first, including a thought-through entrance. Stockroom isolation second: a self-closing door, extraction where the shell allows it, and ideally the stockroom kept slightly negative in pressure to the shop floor. Storage and packaging third: where cartons live, how they stack and how fast stock rotates. Then the signature scent, last.
How large should the scenting line be?
Smaller than most owners expect, and sized by the room rather than the fit-out. Reeds are Rs 749 to Rs 1,349. The Sukoon is Rs 1,899 for one zone of roughly 270 to 320 sq ft. The SOSA Vaayu is Rs 11,999 and draws 5W, about 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour trading day, and suits about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor upward.
My new store smells of glue and new furniture - should I budget more for fragrance?
No. New adhesive, MDF, paint and carpet off-gas for weeks after handover and fade with air changes and time. Fragrance laid over that gives you a room that smells of both, and we make no claim that any product removes, neutralises or absorbs an odour. Put the money into ventilation and wait for the weeks to pass.
Should I budget a socket for a scent machine even if I buy a reed?
Yes, if there is any chance of a machine later. A socket at mounting height on the electrical layout costs almost nothing at drawing stage and a great deal once walls are closed and joinery is installed. An unused socket is a cheap piece of insurance; chasing a wall in a trading store is not.
