Almost everybody who writes to me about this has three or four bottles at home that smell more like each other than like anything else, and cannot work out why. They do smell like each other. There is a default on that side of the shop, and you have been handed it four times.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the men's perfume default, exactly? Two accords and a marketing word. The first is aquatic - a bright, salty-transparent freshness with nothing sweet in it. The second is fougere, which is the old barbershop shape: citrus on top, a green-aromatic heart, and a shaved-wood or coumarin warmth under it. Add the word sport and you have most of the shelf. It is a default for the same reason the sweet women's shelf is a default: it tests well in ninety seconds, it costs little relative to what it does, and it sells.

Which SOSA products should I not buy first? Nawaab is the obvious trap here, because it is the one we position as masculine and royal - but it is white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, and it is the heaviest thing we make for skin. If you are tired of loud, that is the wrong direction rather than the right one. Tabac Noir on our perfume line is a tobacco-vanilla, so it is out if sweetness is also on your list, and the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is the three heaviest attars and excludes Adaa.

So what do I buy, and what does it cost? SOSA Adaa, the 3ml, at ₹379. It is the structural opposite of the default you are describing: bergamot and green cardamom on top instead of an aquatic blast, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, and white musk rather than a sweet amber in the base. An oil sits close to skin, so it is quiet by format as well as by composition. Buy the 3ml and nothing larger - we sell no sampler, so the 3ml is our sample size. The 6ml is ₹669 and the 12ml ₹1,149.
The short answer
Short answer: the men's shelf runs on a default of its own - an aquatic freshness or a fougere barbershop shape, usually with fresh or sport somewhere on the box - and it is there for commercial reasons rather than perfumery ones. The structural opposite of it is not a heavier perfume but a drier and quieter one. At SOSA that is Adaa: bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, ₹379 for the 3ml, with no oud and no sweet base. Nawaab, Tabac Noir and the Pack of 3 are ruled out by name.
The pick: the 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, alcohol-free, and it wears 6-8 hours. If you want something with more material in it and oud is acceptable, SOSA Nawaab at ₹399 is white royal oud, sandalwood, saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber - but it is the heaviest thing we make, which is the opposite end of the range from where you are heading.
Next step: send me the names of the men's fragrances you have worn and got tired of, and I will tell you which accord they share and why Adaa is built the other way round - Ask for an attar recommendation.
Tired of generic masculine perfume - the answer in five linesAdaa 3ml, ₹379 - bergamot, cardamom, white muskThe default you are leaving: aquatic, fougere, sportOut: Nawaab as a first bottle, Tabac Noir, Pack of 3An oil sits close to skin, so it is quiet by formatAdaa carries jasmine sambac, and I will not hide it
The third line rules out our own heaviest attar, which is also the one we market as masculine. If you are tired of being announced, that bottle is the wrong way out of the problem and I would rather say so early.
SOSA Adaa - tap through and read the five notes before you buy
Straight answer
Which attar should somebody buy if generic masculine perfumes are wrong for them?
SOSA Adaa, the 3ml, at ₹379 - and the reason is structural, so it will still be useful at somebody else's counter. The men's shelf has a default of its own, and it is as narrow as the sweet women's shelf: an aquatic freshness, or a fougere, or both, usually with the word fresh or sport printed somewhere on the box. A fougere is the barbershop shape - citrus on top, a green-aromatic heart, a shaved-wood warmth underneath - and an aquatic is a bright transparent salinity with no sugar in it. Both are loud at the start by design, because a spray's opening is its loudest moment and that opening is what sells a bottle in ninety seconds at a counter. Neither accord is there because of perfumery. They are there because they test well, they cost little relative to the work they do, and they sell, and once an accord sells it gets launched again. That is the whole explanation, and I have no study to cite and will not invent one. So the useful question is what the opposite of it looks like. It is not a heavier perfume. It is a drier, quieter and closer one, and that is exactly what Adaa is: bergamot and green cardamom on top, so bright but bitter rather than aquatic; neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart; and white musk in the base rather than a sweet amber or a coumarin warmth. It is an oil, so there is no alcohol to flash off and no sharp first blast, and an attar sits close to skin by format. Now the ruling out, ours included. SOSA makes exactly four attars - Adaa, Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab. Nawaab is the one we publish as masculine and royal, and I should be clear that our positioning is a marketing decision rather than a fact about the liquid - but on your brief it is also the wrong bottle, because it is white royal oud, aged tobacco, leather and amber, the heaviest thing we make for skin. Tabac Noir on our perfume line is a tobacco-vanilla, and the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, the three heaviest, and it excludes Adaa. Buy the 3ml of Adaa at ₹379 and nothing larger, because we sell no sampler and the 3ml is the sample size. Two disclosures: Adaa carries jasmine sambac in a supporting role, so if jasmine is out for you then this bottle is out too; and SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance because there is no honest way to measure one, and no health or skin-safety claim of any kind. Ask for an attar recommendation and send me the ones you got tired of.
The men's shelf has one default - aquatic or fougere, with sport on the box - and it is a commercial habit rather than a perfumery fact. Its structural opposite is drier and quieter, which is Adaa: bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, ₹379 for the 3ml. Nawaab is our heaviest attar and the wrong direction here, even though it is the one we market as masculine.
The bottle is one SOSA Adaa - bergamot and green cardamom on top rather than an aquatic blast, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, and white musk underneath. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, and it wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the size to start with, because we sell no sampler.

The default you are walking away from
Aquatic, fougere and sport are three names for one commercial habit, and the loud opening is the part that was chosen to sell the bottle

The bottle, and the size to buy

One attar, and the honest second option if you want more material in the bottle and oud is acceptable. Both images link through to the product page, where the notes are published in full, which is the part of any listing worth reading first.

SOSA Adaa
For a reader who wants the opposite of a fresh-sport opening
SOSA Adaa, 3ml
Bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk in the base. The lightest of our four attars, with no oud, no vanilla and no rose. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, and it wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the size to buy first.
From ₹379
SOSA Nawaab
If you want more material in it and oud is acceptable
SOSA Nawaab, 3ml
White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, with no synthetic oudh. This is the heaviest thing we make for skin and the one we publish as masculine and royal, so it is the opposite end of the range from Adaa - a legitimate second look, but not the quiet answer. ₹399 for the 3ml.
From ₹399
SOSA Adaa
The attar for a reader leaving the fresh-sport default behind
SOSA Adaa
3ml, 6ml and 12ml at ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149. Published notes: bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. An alcohol-free perfume oil with no DPG carriers on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune. It wears 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. Published positioning: office hours and daytime weddings. No oud, no vanilla, no rose.

How that shelf got its default, and what to buy instead

Three steps, and the first two are the reason the third one is short. Nothing here requires you to learn the fragrance wheel.

1
Name the two accords you are tired of
Aquatic and fougere between them account for most of that shelf
An aquatic is a bright, saline, transparent freshness with no sweetness in it. A fougere is the barbershop shape: citrus on top, green aromatic herbs in the heart, and a shaved-wood or coumarin warmth underneath, which is why so much of it reads like something from a bathroom shelf. Between them they cover most of what gets launched with fresh, blue, aqua or sport on the box. Once you can name the two, you can read a listing and recognise the default in about five seconds, which is a more useful skill than any recommendation I could give you, including this one.
Tip: If the top notes are citrus plus a green herb and the base is a woody musk, you are looking at a fougere whatever the box says.

2
Understand that the positioning is marketing
Nothing in the composition knows which shelf it was sent to, and that includes ours
Bergamot, cardamom, neroli, saffron, sandalwood, oud and musk have costs and evaporation rates and nothing else. The gender arrives later, in how a product is sold, and I should be plain that ours does it too: our ten solid body perfumes are listed for Women and for Men, we publish Nawaab as masculine and royal, and we publish Mastani as the sensual floral. SOSA sells no unisex-labelled solid perfume at all. Those labels were written to sell products. The published note list is the part that stays true whoever buys the bottle, and on this page it is the only part I am asking you to weigh.
Tip: Read the note list, then the label, and in that order. The label was written after the formula was finished.

3
Then buy the opposite structure, not a heavier bottle
Quiet, dry and close are three separate decisions, and an oil gets you the third for free
Quiet is about how much heavy material sits in the base, and Adaa has the least of anything we make for skin. Dry is about the absence of sugar: white musk underneath rather than vanilla, tonka or a sweet amber. Close is about format - an oil has no alcohol to flash off and no propellant, so it stays roughly where you put it, and one roll on one pulse point is a genuinely small amount of fragrance. The mistake I see most often is a reader leaving the fresh shelf and buying the heaviest oud they can find, which solves the boredom and creates a louder problem.

The SOSA principle
The men's shelf runs on a default of its own - aquatic, fougere, the word sport - built by the same commercial pressures that made the other shelf sweet.
Which means the way out is not the heaviest bottle in the shop but a drier, quieter structure, and those two are frequently confused.
SOSA Adaa
Bergamot and cardamom rather than an aquatic top: SOSA Adaa is the lightest of our four attars, with white musk in the base instead of a sweet amber. ₹379 for the 3ml.

Quiet, dry and close - what each word means

Here is the translation as a table, because the words people use for this arrive tangled and they point at three different decisions.

The SOSA shortlist
What a complaint about generic masculine perfume usually means
The words you used What to do
SOSA AdaaThey all smell the same
Aquatic or fougere, the two accords that dominate that shelf. Adaa is neither: bergamot and green cardamom on top, white musk underneath, and no aquatic note anywhere in our attar line.
Too loud in the first ten minutes
That is the alcohol opening of a spray, which is its loudest moment by design. An oil has no alcohol in it, so the composition starts where a spray arrives after the flash-off.
It smells like something from a bathroom shelf
The fougere's green-aromatic heart and soapy-woody base share a palette with grooming products. An attar is built from a different palette, which is why it reads as fragrance.
SOSA NawaabI want more material in the bottle, not less
Then Nawaab at ₹399, with the oud, aged tobacco and leather disclosed - our heaviest attar. It is a different brief from the quiet one, and worth being honest with yourself about which you want.
Warm, but not sweet
Dry warmth rather than sweet warmth: saffron, cardamom, tobacco. Tabac Noir on our perfume line is a tobacco-vanilla, so the vanilla is in it, and it is out if sweetness is on your list.
I would rather spray than dab
Samundar is SOSA's aquatic marine and Khayaal a sparkling bergamot and neroli, both ₹599 for 10ml - but Samundar is the accord you are leaving, so Khayaal is the honest one of the two here.

If the specific thing you are objecting to is that these bottles smell like grooming products, the mechanism is written out in why men's perfumes often smell like shower gel or aftershave, which is about palettes rather than about brands. And if what you want is not a lighter bottle but a fragrance with no aftershave character at all, that brief is answered in the page for a reader who has ruled out aftershave, shower-gel and sporty perfumes. SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and every attar named here is its own composition.

SOSA Adaa
The one I would not start you on: Nawaab at ₹399 is the heaviest thing we make for skin - white royal oud, aged tobacco, leather - and it is also the one we publish as masculine and royal. The label is ours; the weight is real.
One bottle, one size, one pulse point
SOSA Adaa is ₹379 for 3ml - the smallest bottle we make, and the one I would want you to buy first.
See the SOSA Adaa Ask for an attar recommendation
The commonest mistake I see is somebody leaving the fresh shelf and buying the heaviest oud in the shop, which cures the boredom and buys a louder problem.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA
Why this particular bottle, for this particular reader
Bitter citrus rather than saline freshness, dry musk rather than a sweet amber, and an oil that stays where you put it

The SOSA attar specification

SOSA makes exactly four attars, and I would rather show you all four with their notes than a shortlist with the inconvenient parts taken out. Below is the one I am recommending, the heavier attar named honestly as the other direction, and a perfume-line option if you would rather spray. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

The SOSA attar specification
One attar for the quiet brief, and two honest alternatives

Choose on the note list and the shelf stops mattering: an aquatic top and a green-aromatic heart are the default you are leaving, and a bitter citrus over a dry musk is the other shape. SOSA makes exactly four attars, and Nawaab as a first bottle, Tabac Noir and the Pack of 3 are all named on this page as wrong for this brief. Adaa carries jasmine sambac and Nawaab carries oud, aged tobacco and leather, both disclosed rather than buried. The only longevity figure SOSA publishes is that the attars wear 6-8 hours; nothing is published for the perfume line or the solid body perfumes, and no note list is published for the solids at all, so this page never tells you how one of them smells. SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one - nothing about how anybody will read what you are wearing - and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only other thing I will promise you. Ask for an attar recommendation before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

The version of this letter I get most often comes with a list of four bottles and a line at the end saying they all smell the same after a while. They do. I look them up and find the same two accords: an aquatic, or a fougere, which is the barbershop shape of citrus, green herbs and a shaved-wood warmth. The shelf you have been shopping is narrow, and you noticed, which is more than most people do before their fourth bottle.

Why it is narrow is not mysterious and it is not about anybody's nose. A spray's opening is its loudest moment, a customer at a counter gives a bottle about ninety seconds, and those two accords are built to win exactly that test. They are also inexpensive relative to how much work they do. Three commercial pressures, one shelf, and thirty years of repetition. The materials themselves have no opinion about any of it, and nor do the ones in my cupboard.

So my answer is the opposite structure rather than a bigger bottle: Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml, which is bergamot and green cardamom over white musk, with jasmine sambac in the heart that I would rather you heard about from me. It is the lightest thing we make. I am ruling out our own Nawaab as a first purchase even though it is the attar we market as masculine, because it is the heaviest bottle in the range, and the Pack of 3 along with it. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

I'm a man but hate generic masculine perfumes - which attar should I try?
Adaa, and buy the 3ml at Rs 379. SOSA makes exactly four attars and Adaa is the lightest: bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk in the base, with no oud and no sweet amber. It is the structural opposite of the aquatic-fougere default on that shelf. The jasmine sambac sits in a supporting role and is worth knowing about before you buy.
What is the default on the men's fragrance shelf?
Two accords and a word. An aquatic is a bright, saline, transparent freshness with no sweetness. A fougere is the barbershop shape: citrus on top, green aromatic herbs in the heart, and a shaved-wood or coumarin warmth underneath. The word sport gets added to both. They dominate that shelf because they win a ninety-second test at a counter, they cost little relative to the work they do, and they sell - not because of anything in perfumery.
Should I buy Nawaab instead, since SOSA markets it as masculine?
Not as a first bottle on this brief. Nawaab is white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, which makes it the heaviest thing SOSA makes for skin. SOSA does publish it as masculine and royal, and that is a marketing decision rather than a fact about the liquid. If you are tired of loud fragrance, the heaviest attar in the range is the wrong way out. If you want more material and oud is fine, it is Rs 399.
Is an attar quieter than a spray?
An attar sits close to skin, which is a fact about the format rather than a claim about strength. There is no alcohol in it to flash off and no propellant to carry it outward, so it stays roughly where you put it, and one roll on one pulse point is a small amount of fragrance. That is not the same as saying an oil is stronger or lasts longer than a spray. The only wear figure SOSA publishes is 6-8 hours, and only for the attars.
Does SOSA put gender labels on its own products?
Yes. The ten solid body perfumes are listed for Women and for Men, Nawaab is published as masculine and royal, and Mastani is published as the sensual floral. SOSA sells no unisex-labelled solid perfume. It would be strange to write a page about marketing labels and leave out our own, so they are here. The published note list is the part that describes the bottle, and it is the part to choose on.
SOSA Adaa
And the disclosure, in the same breath: Adaa carries jasmine sambac in a supporting role. If jasmine is on your no list, this is not your bottle, and I would rather tell you now than at ₹1,149.

Facts verified 17 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: SOSA makes four attars, each sold in three sizes, 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. SOSA Adaa is ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149, with published notes of bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. SOSA Ameeri is ₹385, ₹679 and ₹1,165, with published notes of Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh. SOSA Mastani is ₹389, ₹685 and ₹1,179, with published notes of night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka. SOSA Nawaab is ₹399, ₹699 and ₹1,199, with published notes of white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. All four are alcohol-free perfume oils with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune, and the only longevity figure SOSA publishes for them is that they wear 6-8 hours. The Pack of 3 (₹1,055, ₹1,859 and ₹3,189) is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, and it does not include Adaa. The SOSA perfume line - including Khayaal and Samundar - comes in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml and is referred to on these pages by its SOSA name and its accord only. SOSA publishes no note list and no longevity figure for the solid body perfumes or for the perfume line, so neither is given here, and how a solid body perfume smells is never described. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, which is why the 3ml is the sample size and is what these pages recommend buying first. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only logistics fact stated on these pages. Choosing a fragrance is a matter of preference: SOSA makes no health, skin-safety, hypoallergenic, therapeutic or wellbeing claim for any fragrance, makes no claim about compliments, confidence or any other outcome of wearing one, and offers nothing here as medical advice - a reaction on skin is a conversation for a doctor rather than for a perfumer.
