This is one of my favourite briefs, because it tells me you already know your taste. You want a fragrance with depth, weight, seriousness, the kind of scent that feels like evening rather than morning, but you have smelled one too many "dark" perfumes that turn into an ashtray of cured tobacco, and you are done with that. Good news: dark and tobacco are not the same thing. Let me hand you the one I would reach for.
Buy Nawaab, our white royal oud attar. Deep and dark from oud and woods, never from tobacco or smoke. Start with the 3ml at ₹399.
Why dark does not have to mean tobacco
Here is the thing most brands never explain. "Dark" is a feeling, weight, shadow, depth, a scent that leans toward night. But perfumers reach that feeling in very different ways. Some do it with tobacco and its cured, dried-leaf, slightly sweet-smoky character. Some do it with leather, that tarry, animalic, suede note. And some do it with dark woods and oud, which give you all the depth and none of that cured-tobacco or hide smell.
Nawaab lives firmly in the third camp. Its darkness comes from white royal oud, a smooth, resinous, modern oud, wrapped around creamy Mysore sandalwood, with a thread of Kashmir saffron running through the top for that warm, slightly leathery-in-a-good-way glow, without any actual leather. There is no tobacco leaf. There is no cigar. There is no ashtray. It is dark the way a candlelit room panelled in old wood is dark.

The one alternate, and when to choose it
If, reading this, you realise your idea of "dark" is actually warmer and a touch sweeter, less panelled-library and more amber-glow, then Zaffran (₹599 for 10ml) is your pick instead. It is saffron, jasmine, amber and cedar, a rich, sweet-amber darkness that still has absolutely no tobacco and no leather. Zaffran is SOSA's own interpretation inspired by Baccarat Rouge 540. SOSA is an independent house and is not affiliated with or endorsed by these brands. Choose Nawaab if you want woody-dark; choose Zaffran if you want warm-amber-dark.
₹599 / 10mlSOSA Zaffran — the sweet-amber-dark alternate. Saffron + Jasmine + Amber + Cedar. Also 50ml ₹1,799, 100ml ₹3,499.How it wears
Nawaab is a concentrated, alcohol-free attar oil, so it sits close to your skin, roughly a foot or two, rather than announcing itself across a room. I say this plainly because people expect "dark" to also mean "loud", and it does not have to. This is a deep, private, intimate dark that lasts a solid 8 to 10 hours and rewards the people who get close to you. If you specifically want more reach, size up to the 12ml and apply a touch more, or layer it lightly under a fresh scent.
An honest note
SOSA's oud is the modern, clean, refined style, not the raw, barnyard, medicinal oud some collectors chase. If you were hoping for a rustic, feral dark, this is not that, and I would rather tell you now. But for someone who wants depth and seriousness minus the tobacco and minus the animalic edge, that modern smoothness is precisely the point.
