In one of these: Boond ₹899 for a bedside — 300ml tank, up to 150 sq ft, about six hours a fill, USB, soft colour night light. Or Sukoon ₹1,899 for a hall — 500ml, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours a fill on low, steady/2H/4H timers, three 15ml scents of your choice included.
Dose: 3–6 drops per tank. Three for a bedroom, five or six for a hall.
If you will not have a machine: the reed line has no sandalwood, and no substitute for it either. Mountain Breeze ₹849 is a cool green wood; Fresh Brew ₹849 is creamy warmth without the wood.
2. It is water-based, so it needs a machine. That is not an upsell, it is chemistry — this liquid disperses in cool mist and will do nothing at all on a fibre reed. Boond ₹899: 300ml tank, up to 150 sq ft, roughly six hours a fill, USB-powered, with a soft colour night light that makes it a genuinely good bedside object. Sukoon ₹1,899: 500ml, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours a fill on low, steady, 2H and 4H timers.
3. If you are buying both at once, buy the Sukoon. Three 15ml scents of your choice are included, so ₹1,899 is a complete setup rather than a component. If you are buying for a bedside and nothing else, buy the Boond and one 15ml Warm Welcome.
4. Use three to six drops per tank. Three for a bedroom, five or six for a hall. That is per tank, not per litre — this is a fragrance concentrate, not an essential oil you are diluting by volume.
5. If you will not have a machine, I have nothing in sandalwood for you. Not a near-miss, not a stretch. Mountain Breeze ₹849 is the woody reed and it is a cool green wood, which is the opposite temperature; Fresh Brew ₹849 has the creaminess but reaches it through coffee and vanilla. Both are honest neighbours. Neither is sandalwood.

Why sandalwood, of all notes, is the one worth buying a machine for
Here is the argument in two sentences, because you should be allowed to disagree with it quickly. Sandalwood is the rare material that projects softly and never leaves — it does not fill a room so much as line it — and that combination of low projection with extreme persistence is exactly what a room actually wants from a fragrance rather than what a bottle usually gives it. Which is why a machine that can run the same scent for sixteen hours suits sandalwood better than it suits almost any other note: you are not buying loudness by the hour, you are buying the same quiet thing, continuously, for as long as you are in the house.
Warm Welcome₹299Citrus, floral and sandalwood, in that order down the structure. The citrus is what you meet, the sandalwood is what stays, and the gap between those two facts is the entire reason this is the scent I hand people who complain that the last thing they bought was over in an hour. It is the most staying power of the seven, and it earned that with material rather than with dosage. 15ml ₹299 · 100ml ₹999 · 300ml ₹1,799.
Boond₹899A 300ml tank, coverage up to 150 sq ft, about six hours on a fill, USB-powered, with a soft colour night light. Six hours is not a limitation for a bedroom — it is roughly the useful length of a night, and the light is the reason this ends up on a bedside table rather than in a cupboard. With one 15ml Warm Welcome you are at ₹1,198 for the whole arrangement.
Sukoon₹1,899500ml tank, 270–320 sq ft of coverage, 16–18 hours on a single fill on low, and steady, 2H and 4H timer settings. Three 15ml scents of your choice come with it, which is what makes ₹1,899 a complete setup instead of a machine you then have to furnish. Sixteen hours on low is where sandalwood is happiest, because the material rewards continuity rather than bursts.
What is actually in a bottle when the label says sandalwood
Briefly, because this deserves a sentence of honesty rather than a lecture. The Indian species is protected and tightly regulated, which means genuine Mysore sandalwood is largely reserved for fine fragrance and is not what is scenting anybody's living room at household prices. Most sandalwood in home products is Australian sandalwood or a well-made synthetic santalol, and both of those are entirely honest materials when they are labelled as what they are. Australian sandalwood is a touch drier and less lactonic; good santalol is astonishingly close, and it is stable, which sandalwood in a hot Indian room badly needs.
What is not honest is a cedar-and-amber construction wearing the name. That is the commonest thing sold as sandalwood in this country, and you can usually catch it: it starts sharp rather than soft, it has a pencil-shaving edge, and it goes sweet at the end instead of going creamy. If you have ever bought a sandalwood you disliked, that is more likely to be what you disliked than sandalwood itself.

Drops, placement, and what to do if you will not have a machine
Sandalwood is the best bedroom material there is, and getting it right in a bedroom takes about four decisions. Use the Boond with three drops, not five — a bedroom that smells of anything at the moment you notice it is already too strong. Start it two hours before you plan to sleep, so the room is scented rather than actively being scented when you get into bed. Put the machine across the room from the wardrobe, because a cool mist will settle into fabric and you do not want your clothes carrying it. And put it at waist height or above: cool mist falls, so a machine on the floor scents your ankles and a machine on a chest of drawers scents the room. Never in a split-AC draught, which will shred the top of the fragrance and blow the mist somewhere you are not.
Two housekeeping points that decide whether the machine is still working in a year. Use filtered water if you are in a hard-water city — Delhi, Hyderabad, most of Chennai — because scale on the ultrasonic plate is the single commonest reason one of these appears to weaken. And rinse the tank when you change scents, since sandalwood is persistent enough to sit under whatever you put in next for a fortnight. Dose is three to six drops per tank, never per litre.
And if the answer is simply that you do not want a machine in the house, take that seriously, because I do. The reed line has no sandalwood and no substitute for one. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 — Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar, 9.4 on our strength scale — is the woody reed, and it is a cool green wood where sandalwood is warm and creamy. It is an honest neighbour, not a substitute, and I would rather you bought it knowing that. Fresh Brew at ₹849 and 9.5 comes at the same problem from the other side: it has the creaminess and the warmth you like in sandalwood, but through Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla rather than through wood. Both are 50ml at ₹849 and 130ml at ₹1,349, both run 6–8 weeks and 14–18 weeks respectively, and both are substitutions rather than matches.
What to buy, in order — and the gap said again
Everything on this page in the order I would actually spend the money, with the honest absence at the bottom where you can see it. If you are buying one thing, buy the ₹299 bottle and borrow a machine to try it in. If you are buying properly, buy the Sukoon and stop thinking about it.
| Buy | What it is | When it is the right answer | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Warm Welcome 15ml ★ | Citrus, floral and real sandalwood — most staying power of the seven | First, always. ₹299 settles whether this is your sandalwood | ₹299 |
| 2. Sukoon | 500ml, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18h on low, steady/2H/4H timers, three 15ml scents included | If you want one purchase to be the entire answer | ₹1,899 |
| 3. Boond | 300ml, up to 150 sq ft, ~6h a fill, USB, soft colour night light | For a bedside — three drops, started two hours before sleep | ₹899 |
| 4. Warm Welcome 100ml or 300ml | The same fragrance in a size that stops the reordering | Once you know it is the one you keep going back to | ₹999 / ₹1,799 |
| 5. Mountain Breeze or Fresh Brew | Cool green wood at 9.4, or creamy warmth through coffee and vanilla at 9.5 | Only if there will be no machine — as substitutions, not matches | ₹849 each |
| No sandalwood reed: the honest gap | The reed line contains no sandalwood, no oud, no vetiver, no teak and no amber — and there is no oud anywhere at SOSA in any format | Said plainly rather than stretched to fit | — |
Versailles
Sandalwood is asked for here more than any other single note, and it is the one request I have to answer twice — once with a no and once with a yes. The no is straightforward: there is no sandalwood reed diffuser at SOSA and I am not going to build one out of cedar and amber and let you find out in a fortnight. That construction is everywhere, it is cheap to make, and it is the reason a lot of people think they have gone off sandalwood.
The yes is Warm Welcome, and I would rather send you across formats to something real than keep you in the format you arrived in with something that is nearly right. It costs ₹299, and if you decide you dislike it you have lost very little. That seems to me a fairer trade than ₹849 spent on a wood that is the wrong temperature.
If you do buy it, give it three drops and a bedroom. Sandalwood does its best work in the hours you are not paying attention to it, which is exactly the compliment you cannot pay to most home fragrance. Everything is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
