Clean the smoke out, surface by surface
I will not pretend this one is easy, because smoke is the hardest household smell there is, and being honest about that saves you from wasting money on quick fixes. People forget the walls and ceilings. Smoke leaves a fine film on hard surfaces, including paint, glass and inside cupboards, and that film keeps releasing smell. Wiping walls, ceilings and hard furniture down removes a source most folks never think to clean.
If the smoke is from a fire rather than cigarettes, or it has soaked in over years, this can be a job for professional restoration, and there is no shame in that; it is the right call when residue is everywhere. Myth: a strong candle or air freshener removes smoke smell. It competes with it for an hour, then the smoke wins because it is still in the surfaces. Clean it out first; scent is for the home you have already cleared.
