Guests are coming, there is a dog on the sofa and a faint smell you cannot quite place, and the temptation is to reach for something strong an hour before. Please do not. Almost everything that changes how your home smells on Saturday happens on Thursday, and the fragrance on the day should be the lightest part of the plan.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I make my house smell nice before guests arrive when I have pets? Do the work two days early rather than in the last hour. Two days out, wash the pet bed covers, the sofa throws and the cushion covers. One day out, vacuum rugs and upholstery thoroughly and re-treat any old accident spots with an enzymatic cleaner. Two hours out, open the windows properly for ten minutes, wipe the food bowls and the mat under them, and scoop the litter tray. Forty-five minutes before people arrive, start a light fragrance on a low setting so it has settled by the time the doorbell goes. Never start a strong scent at the door: fragrance that arrives with your guests is always obvious. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) adds scent to a clean home and does not remove pet odour.
Should I use more fragrance when guests are coming and I have a dog? No, and this is the most common mistake. Turning the fragrance up over a dog smell gives your guests both at once, which reads worse than either on its own, and your own nose is the least reliable judge because olfactory adaptation means you cannot smell your own home. Step outside for ten minutes and come back in to calibrate, or ask someone who does not live with animals. If the house still smells of dog, it needs laundry and a vacuum, not a higher setting. In a home with animals the correct direction is always lighter.
How do I keep my pets comfortable when the house is full of guests? Give them a quiet room of their own with no fragrance in it, their bed, water and the door genuinely open so they can retreat and return. Do not shut an animal into a room, a crate, a utility room or a balcony with a scent machine running anywhere it cannot leave. Keep any machine physically out of reach and out of the room they sleep in, run it on the lowest useful setting, and switch it off if any animal sneezes, drools, hides, paws at its face or changes its behaviour. SOSA makes no claim that any product is pet-safe, and if you are unsure, ask your vet.
The short answer
Short answer: do the work two days early. Wash pet bed covers, sofa throws and cushion covers two days out, vacuum rugs and upholstery and treat old accident spots the day before, air the rooms and scoop the tray two hours out, and start a light fragrance on a low setting about 45 minutes before the doorbell. Never start a strong scent at the door, and never turn the fragrance up to cover a dog smell - that gives your guests both at once.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) on the main air path, wall mounted out of reach, started 45 minutes before your guests on the lowest useful setting. It adds fragrance to a clean home and does not remove pet odour, and it is not claimed to be pet-safe - keep the animals a quiet unscented room to retreat to.
Next step: tell us the layout and where the animals will be during the evening, and we will tell you what to run and where - ask us what fits your home.
Fragrance started as the doorbell rings is obvious, and obvious is the opposite of welcoming. Everything that actually changes how the house smells happens in the two days before. And on a busy day the animals need more consideration than usual, not less: somewhere quiet, unscented and their own to go to.
What should I actually do before guests arrive if I have pets?
Work backwards from the doorbell. Two days out is when the real work happens, because textiles need time: pet bed covers, sofa throws, cushion covers, the blanket on the armchair and any towels by the door all go into the wash, hot, without fabric conditioner, with an extra rinse. This is the step that actually changes the room, and it is the step people skip because it does not feel like preparing for guests. One day out, vacuum the rugs and the upholstery properly, including under and behind the sofa cushions, and re-treat any old accident spot with an enzymatic cleaner and let it dwell, because a warm crowded room brings old spots back to life. For accidents, the tool matters and most people use the wrong one. Urine, vomit and anal gland material are made of organic compounds that an ordinary floor cleaner or detergent simply spreads and covers. An enzymatic cleaner is different: it contains enzymes that break those compounds down into things that do not smell, so the odour is removed rather than masked. Use plenty of it, more than feels sensible, because the liquid needs to reach as deep into the carpet, underlay or mattress as the accident did, and let it sit for the time on the bottle instead of wiping it straight off. There is a second reason this matters that has nothing to do with your nose: a spot cleaned with an ordinary cleaner still carries the scent marker the animal laid down, and to the animal that marker is an invitation to go there again. Never use an ammonia-based cleaner on a pet accident, because ammonia is a component of urine and you are effectively re-marking the spot yourself. Two hours out, open windows wide for ten minutes rather than leaving them cracked all day, wipe the food bowls and wash the mat under them, scoop the litter tray and change it if it is close to due, and wipe the skirting or wall behind the water bowl. Forty-five minutes out, start the fragrance, on a low setting. That gap is the whole trick: it lets the scent diffuse and settle so the house smells as though it always smells like this, rather than announcing that something was switched on. One more thing, gently. You cannot smell your own home. Olfactory adaptation means your nose stops registering a constant background smell within minutes of being in it, which is why a house can smell strongly of dog to a visitor and of nothing at all to the people who live there. So do not calibrate anything by your own nose. Go out for an hour, come back in and pay attention in the first ten seconds. Better still, ask a friend who does not own animals to be honest with you. That first-ten-seconds test is also the only reliable way to tell whether you are running too much fragrance, which is the most common mistake in a scented home. And now the part specific to a home with animals, which matters more than the smell: a house full of guests is a stressful evening for a lot of pets. Give them a quiet room with their bed, their water, no fragrance at all and the door genuinely open so they can retreat and return as they choose. Do not shut an animal into a room, a crate, a utility room or a balcony, and never anywhere a machine is running that it cannot walk away from. Keep the machine out of reach and out of the room they sleep in, run it on the lowest useful setting, and switch it off entirely if any animal sneezes, drools, hides, paws at its face or changes its behaviour. And the line we will not soften: fragrance does not remove odour molecules, it adds fragrance molecules alongside them. Diffusing a scent does not break down, neutralise, capture or cancel anything a dog or a litter tray has put into a room. Run a machine over an unwashed dog bed and you get dog and fragrance at once, which is worse than either on its own, because the nose stops reading two smells and starts reading one confusing new one. Fragrance is the finish on a room that is already clean. It is never a substitute for the laundry, and any brand that suggests otherwise is overselling. We make no claim that any SOSA product is pet-safe. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³ and can be scheduled from the app so the whole thing happens without you thinking about it. Ask us what fits your home.
Two days out: wash the covers and throws. One day out: vacuum and treat old spots. Two hours out: air the rooms and scoop the tray. Forty-five minutes out: fragrance, on low. Never at the doorbell, never turned up, and always with an unscented room open for the animals.
On the day itself the job is small and it should stay small. Start the SOSA Vaayu45 minutes before your guests, on the lowest useful setting, and let it settle. Rated to 1000m³, under 38dB, waterless and wall-mountable so it stays out of reach, with app timers so you can set it and forget it. It adds fragrance to a clean home. It does not remove pet odour, and it is not claimed to be pet-safe.
Nothing here replaces the two days of laundry and vacuuming that come before it. If those are done, the job on the day is to hold something light and consistent across the rooms people will actually be in, and to be able to switch it off instantly if an animal seems unsettled.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser at ₹11,999 rated to 1000m³ - about 2,000-3,000 sq ft - so one machine covers the rooms guests will use. Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and adjustable intensity, so a low run can start automatically before people arrive and stop when the evening ends.
Under 38dB, which is quieter than a fridge, and waterless so there is nothing damp or sticky landing on furniture during a party. Wall mounted, it stays out of reach of a dog moving through a crowded room and out of the way of guests.
Controlled from the app or the onboard buttons, with auto-stop and key-lock. If any animal in the house looks unsettled, you can stop it from wherever you are standing, open the windows and let the room clear.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank lasting up to about 75 days, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers with adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Waterless, so no dampness and no residue. Made in India. Not claimed to be pet-safe: keep it out of reach and out of the room your animal sleeps in.
The timeline: two days out, two hours out, forty-five minutes out
Three moments decide how your home smells when the door opens, and only one of them is on the day.
1
Two days out
The laundry that nobody counts as party preparation
This is the step that actually works and the step that gets skipped, because washing a dog bed on Thursday does not feel like getting ready for Saturday. It is. Coat oil concentrates in the pet bed, the sofa throw, the cushion covers and the blanket on whichever chair the animal has claimed, and those textiles are what a guest smells when they sit down and compress the fabric. Wash them hot, without fabric conditioner, with an extra rinse, and deal with the inner cushion of the pet bed as well as the cover, since a clean cover over an old core still smells. Two days gives you time to dry things properly, which matters in the monsoon, when laundry dried indoors brings its own damp smell into the room and you have solved one problem by creating another. If you only do one thing on this entire page, do this one.
Tip: wash the sofa throw even if it looks clean. It is the thing guests actually sit on.
The machine is the last five percent. The Vaayu runs on the day, after the laundry has done the real work.
Air properly, deal with bowls and trays, and resist the urge to spray
Open the windows wide for ten minutes rather than leaving them on a crack for six hours, because a real cross-draught exchanges the air in a room and a cracked window mostly does not. Then handle the two things guests notice and owners have stopped noticing: the feeding area, where the mat under the bowls and the wall or skirting behind them collect food residue and splashed water, and the litter tray, which should be scooped and, if it is anywhere near due, fully changed and washed. Wipe paw marks off the floor by the door. Then stop. The urge at this point is to spray something over everything, and it is the wrong instinct: an aerosol over a dog smell gives you dog and aerosol, and it puts a burst of fragrance at exactly nose height for an animal standing on the floor. If something still smells, it needs a cloth or a wash, not a spray. And never spray a fabric freshener onto a pet bed, a blanket the animal uses or anywhere the animal lies.
A machine placed high and run lightly is a very different thing from a spray at floor level. Neither removes odour.
Forty-five minutes out, and the animals during the evening
Light, early, and with somewhere quiet to retreat to
Start the fragrance about 45 minutes before people arrive, on the lowest setting that does anything at all, so it has diffused and settled by the time the door opens. Scent that arrives with your guests is obvious, and the compliment you are after is not "what is that smell" but the sense that the house is simply pleasant. Calibrate by stepping outside for ten minutes and coming back in, because you cannot smell your own home. Then the part that matters more than any of this. A house full of people is a lot for many animals, and a scented house full of people is more. Set up a quiet room with the animal's bed, water, a familiar blanket and no fragrance running in it at all, and leave the door genuinely open so it can retreat and come back as it likes. Do not shut an animal in anywhere, and do not put a diffuser near where it has chosen to hide. Keep the machine out of reach and out of the sleeping room, run it low, and switch it off completely if the animal sneezes, drools, hides more than usual, paws at its face or behaves in a way you cannot explain. That is not a formality, it is the whole point.
Tip: the animals get a room with nothing running in it, and the door stays open all evening.
The Vaayu app makes the timing automatic and the off switch immediate, which is exactly what you want on a busy evening.
The house that smells wonderful when guests arrive was cleaned on Thursday. The fragrance on Saturday is doing about five percent of the work, and it should smell like it.
Which is why the answer to a lingering pet smell an hour before a party is a vacuum and an open window, never a higher setting.
Start it 45 minutes before, on low: SOSA Vaayu with Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, rated to 1000m³. ₹11,999.
Here is the timeline as a table. Notice how little of it happens on the day, and how the last row is not about the smell at all.

What you are actually dealing with
What fixes it
Two days out
Wash pet bed covers, sofa throws, cushion covers and door towels, hot, without conditioner, with an extra rinse. Deal with the pet bed's inner cushion too. This does most of the work.
One day out
Vacuum rugs and upholstery properly, including under the cushions, and re-treat any old accident spot with an enzymatic cleaner, because a warm crowded room brings old spots back.
Two hours out
Air the rooms wide for ten minutes, wash the mat under the bowls, scoop and if needed change the litter tray, and wipe paw marks by the door. Do not reach for a spray.
Forty-five minutes out, and through the evening
Start the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) on the lowest useful setting, out of reach. Give the animals a quiet room with no fragrance and the door open, and switch the machine off if any of them seems unsettled. View →
Nothing damp, nothing sticky, on a busy evening: SOSA Vaayu nebulises pure fragrance oil with no water and no heat, so nothing settles on furniture or floors. ₹11,999.
The compliment you want is not a comment about the fragrance. It is a guest who sits down on your sofa, with your dog beside them, and never thinks about it at all.

Why it suits a busy evening
Quiet, waterless, timed, and easy to switch off the moment an animal seems unsettled
What we would run on a guest day in a home with animals: one machine, low, started early, out of reach, with an unscented room left open for the animals throughout. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA specification for pet homes
Wash, groom, dry and vacuum first. Then one machine, kept out of reach and run lightly.
Whole flats, villa floors and open-plan homes up to about 2,000-3,000 sq ft
1000m³ coverage, waterless so nothing damp lands on beds or rugs, wall-mountable so it stays out of reach, 400ml tank up to about 75 days, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop and key-lock
On the day itself, less is the whole strategy. One line worth being clear about: a fragrance machine is a fragrance machine. It is not an air purifier. It does not filter, disinfect, dehumidify or remove anything from the air, and it makes no health claim of any kind, for people or for animals. We make no claim that any SOSA product is pet-safe. Keep any machine out of the animals' reach and out of the room they sleep in, run it lightly, give them a quiet unscented room with the door open, never shut an animal into a space with fragrance running that it cannot leave, and stop immediately if any animal sneezes, drools, hides, paws at its face or changes its behaviour. Ask your vet if you are unsure, particularly with cats, birds and small mammals. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. A note from Sonal
The most useful thing I can tell anyone hosting with animals in the house is that the work happens on Thursday. Wash the throws, wash the bed covers, wash the blanket on the chair. By Saturday they are dry, the room has changed, and you have not had to do anything dramatic in the last hour. Almost every panicked message I get about a party is really a message about laundry that did not happen two days earlier.
The second thing is to resist the urge to turn everything up. A strong fragrance over a pet smell does not read as a clean house, it reads as a covered one, and your guests will notice both. Your own nose is no help here, because you stopped smelling your own home years ago. Step outside for ten minutes, walk back in, and trust the first ten seconds.
And the animals. A house full of strangers is a big evening for a dog and an even bigger one for a cat, so on that night especially they need somewhere quiet, unscented and theirs, with the door open so they can come and go. I never shut an animal in with a machine running, and I would switch the machine off entirely before I would leave an animal with nowhere to move away to. Frequently asked questions
How do I make my home smell nice before guests arrive when I have pets?
Work backwards from the doorbell. Two days out, wash the pet bed covers, sofa throws, cushion covers and door towels, hot, without fabric conditioner and with an extra rinse, and deal with the pet bed's inner cushion as well. One day out, vacuum rugs and upholstery thoroughly and re-treat any old accident spot with an enzymatic cleaner. Two hours out, air the rooms wide for ten minutes, wash the mat under the food bowls, scoop the litter tray and wipe paw marks by the door. Forty-five minutes out, start a light fragrance on a low setting so it has settled before anyone arrives.
Should I turn the fragrance up if the house still smells of the dog?
No. Fragrance adds scent alongside an odour rather than removing it, so a higher setting over a pet smell gives your guests both at once, which reads worse than either alone. If the room still smells, it needs a vacuum, a wash or an open window rather than more perfume. Your own nose is the least reliable judge, because olfactory adaptation means you cannot smell your own home. Step outside for ten minutes and come back in, or ask someone who does not live with animals to tell you honestly. In a home with pets the correct direction is always lighter.
How long before guests arrive should I start the diffuser?
About 45 minutes, on the lowest setting that does anything. That gives the fragrance time to diffuse and settle so it reads as the smell of your home rather than something switched on at the door. Fragrance that arrives at the same moment your guests do is always obvious. The SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 has app timers for 1, 4, 8 and 24 hour runs with adjustable intensity, so the low run can start automatically before people arrive and stop when the evening ends.
How do I keep my pets comfortable during a party?
Give them a quiet room of their own with their bed, water, a familiar blanket, no fragrance running in it at all and the door genuinely open so they can retreat and return as they choose. Do not shut an animal into a room, a crate, a utility room or a balcony, and never leave an animal anywhere it cannot walk away from a running machine. Keep any machine physically out of reach and out of the room they sleep in, run it on the lowest useful setting, and switch it off completely if any animal sneezes, drools, hides, paws at its face or changes its behaviour.
Is it safe to run a scent machine when my pets are in the house?
We do not claim it is, and we would not trust a fragrance brand that made that claim about any product. Animals have a far more sensitive sense of smell than we do, and cats, birds and small mammals are more sensitive again than dogs, with birds in particular having highly sensitive respiratory systems. If you are unsure, ask your vet before you scent a space you share with an animal, and especially so for a bird, a cat, a rabbit or any small mammal. If you do scent a home with pets, keep the machine physically out of the animal's reach and out of the room it sleeps in, run it lightly rather than heavily, always leave the animal an open route to an unscented room, and never scent a space it cannot leave, such as a crate, a closed utility room or a balcony it is shut out on.
And an off switch in your pocket: SOSA Vaayu is controlled from the app or the onboard buttons, with auto-stop and key-lock. Not claimed to be pet-safe. ₹11,999.

Waterless and wall-mountable, so it stays out of reach.
