The bottle is not the part that wears out — the sticks are. They're the wick of the whole thing, and like any wick they slowly clog. Keep them fresh and a reed holds its scent honestly for weeks; neglect them and the room quietly goes flat while the liquid sits there full.

Quick answer

Flip weekly: turn the sticks over once a week to refresh the throw.

Replace sticks every ~3–4 weeks: fit fresh reeds when flipping no longer revives the scent. In humid coastal cities, sooner.

Top up with a refill: fresh sticks plus fresh liquid brings a reed back to full strength — no need to buy a whole new set.

The short version
Short answer: Flip the sticks weekly; replace them with fresh reeds every three to four weeks, or sooner if they clog. Pair fresh sticks with a refill to restore full strength — the vessel itself lasts indefinitely.
The pick: Any SOSA reed from ₹749; refills keep it going. For zero stick-maintenance in a big room, the Sukoon ₹1,799 or waterless Vaayu ₹11,999.

A reed works by capillary action: the porous sticks draw fragrance oil up from the bottle and release it into the air from their exposed length. Over time the heavier, stickier fragrance molecules build up inside the reed and block those tiny channels, so less liquid climbs and less scent escapes — even though there's plenty left in the bottle. This is completely normal, and it's why "the diffuser stopped working" is nearly always a stick problem, not a liquid problem. The fix costs a few rupees and five minutes.

A simple reed-stick routine
Two small habits keep a living-room reed at full strength.

1. Flip once a week. Lift the sticks out, turn them over, and reinsert them saturated-end-up. The drier ends now draw fresh liquid and the scent lifts noticeably for a day or two.

2. Replace the sticks every 3–4 weeks. When a flip no longer revives things and the tops look darkened or crusted, fit fresh reeds. This is the real "reset."

3. Watch the climate. In humid coastal cities — Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi — reeds clog faster, so swap them sooner. Dry Pune or Delhi winters stretch them longer.

4. Top up the liquid. When the bottle runs low, add a reed refill rather than binning the vessel. Fresh sticks plus fresh liquid equals a brand-new reed.

The reed maintenance calendar
What to do, and how often
Action How often Why it matters
Flip the sticks over ~Once a week Drier ends draw fresh liquid; quick lift in throw
Replace sticks with fresh reeds Every ~3–4 weeks Clogged reeds stop drawing even with liquid left
Top up with a refill When liquid runs low (50ml ≈ 6–8 wks) Keeps the vessel; far cheaper than a whole new set
Full new reed / larger size When you want a scent change or longer runs 130ml lasts longer between refills than 50ml
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuser with reeds
Fresh sticks, full strength
Mountain Breeze — reed diffuser from ₹849
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar, alcohol-free and passive. Flip the reeds weekly and swap them for fresh ones every few weeks and it holds a steady, grounded note in a living room for the full life of the bottle. Choose the 130ml for longer between refills.
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic diffuser
No sticks to manage
Sukoon — 500ml ultrasonic ₹1,799
If you'd rather not think about flipping and swapping sticks at all in a busy living room, an ultrasonic simply runs the Hotel Collection fragrance from a tank — top it up and go. For long daily runs in a humid coastal home, the waterless Vaayu avoids added humidity.
The SOSA principle
The sticks are the consumable — not the bottle.
Fresh reeds every few weeks and a refill when the liquid drops keeps a diffuser at full strength for a fraction of the cost of buying new each time.

One honest caveat: I never recommend adding more and more sticks to chase strength on old, clogged reeds — you'll just burn through liquid faster while the throw stays weak. Change the sticks instead. And if you find yourself replacing reeds constantly because the living room is simply too big for passive scenting, that's not a maintenance problem — it's a sizing one, and the honest answer is to move to a Sukoon or the waterless Vaayu.

Frequently asked
How often should I replace reed diffuser sticks?
Flip the sticks about once a week to refresh the scent, and replace them with fresh reeds roughly every three to four weeks. In a humid coastal city or a heavily used living room they clog faster and may need swapping sooner. Fresh sticks paired with a refill restore full strength.
What is the difference between flipping and replacing reed sticks?
Flipping means turning the sticks upside down so the saturated ends sit up and the drier ends draw fresh liquid — a quick weekly refresh. Replacing means fitting brand-new sticks when the old ones have clogged with heavier fragrance molecules and can no longer draw liquid, which is usually every few weeks.
How do I know when reed sticks need changing?
When flipping the sticks no longer revives the scent and there is still liquid in the bottle, the reeds have clogged and need replacing. The tops often look darkened or crusted. Fit fresh sticks, and if the liquid is low, add a refill at the same time.
Do I have to buy a whole new reed diffuser each time?
No. The bottle and vessel last; only the sticks and the liquid are consumables. Replace the sticks when they clog and top up with a reed refill when the liquid runs low, which is far cheaper than buying a whole new set each time. For an always-on large room, an ultrasonic or waterless diffuser removes stick maintenance entirely.
Keep it fresh, keep it cheap
Fresh sticks and a refill — full strength again in five minutes.
Flip weekly, replace the reeds every few weeks, top up the liquid when it drops. Or skip stick-maintenance entirely with an ultrasonic or waterless diffuser for a big room.
