Founder Diaries · How Many Sukoons
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles7 min readUpdated August 2026
A duplex is not one home but two stacked on top of each other, joined by a staircase that behaves like a chimney. So you stop counting rooms and start counting floors: at least four diffusers, and ideally one waterless Vaayu holding each storey on its own.
Quick answer
How many? Four or more. Think per floor — each level needs its own signature.
Best setup: one waterless Vaayu (₹11,999) per floor, plus a Sukoon (₹1,799) in each bedroom.
Budget route: four Sukoons and a couple of Boonds, run in sessions — best in drier cities.
The short version
Short answer: Scent a duplex floor by floor — a
Vaayu per level, or four-plus
Sukoons across the two storeys.
The pick: Vaayu downstairs for the social floor, Vaayu or Sukoons upstairs for the bedrooms. Fresh signature below, warm one above.

A duplex typically stacks a lower social floor — entrance, living, dining, kitchen, often a guest bedroom — over an upper private floor of bedrooms, and joins them with an open staircase. That staircase is the whole design problem. Warm scented air rises, so whatever you run downstairs drifts up and meets whatever you run above. Try to scent a duplex room by random room and the stairwell becomes a place where two unrelated fragrances collide. The elegant solution is to give each floor one clear identity, which is why the count for a duplex is best expressed as at least one strong system per floor.
The honest count
How many diffusers for a duplex — and where do they go?
1. Think in floors, not rooms. Give the lower social floor one signature and the upper sleeping floor another. That is the organising idea for the whole home.
2. One Vaayu for the lower floor. A large open social level is exactly what a waterless machine is for — even coverage, no humidity, scheduled to be on before guests arrive.
3. Upstairs: a Vaayu, or a Sukoon per bedroom. A second Vaayu holds the whole sleeping floor; or give each bedroom its own Sukoon for personal scents.
4. Guest room and study take a Boond or share the floor's scent.
5. Leave the staircase to carry the scent between levels — no dedicated device needed there.

One per floor — the duplex answer
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999
A waterless cold-air machine covering up to 1000 cubic metres with no added humidity and app scheduling. One per storey gives each floor a single, even signature that several misting diffusers cannot match — and no dampness on a coastal duplex through the monsoon. Schedule the lower floor to be scented before you host.
Personal scent in the bedrooms
SOSA Sukoon ₹1,799
Whether or not you put a Vaayu upstairs, a Sukoon in each bedroom lets everyone choose their own scent. It runs the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; use it in 30 to 60 minute sessions so the sleeping floor stays comfortable and never damp.
The SOSA principle
In a duplex, scent the storeys, not the rooms.
Give each floor one clear signature — fresh below where you host, warm above where you sleep — and let the staircase carry the change. That is what turns two levels into two moods instead of one muddle.
The honest caveat matters most in a home this large. A duplex tempts you into running a great many ultrasonic diffusers, and every one adds a little humidity — multiply that across two floors in Mumbai, Chennai or Goa through the monsoon and you can genuinely feel it. That is why, for a duplex, I lean towards the waterless Vaayu for each floor's open area, with Sukoons kept for the bedrooms and run in sessions. In a very large or ducted duplex, the HVAC systems — Aangan or Meenar — are the next step up, but for most homes a Vaayu per floor is plenty. And the rule never changes: fragrance crowns clean, dry, well-aired space; it never masks a musty room or damp walls, so fix those at source before you scent a single floor. A portion of whatever you spend also funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked
How many ultrasonic diffusers does a duplex need?
Four or more, because a duplex is really two homes stacked — each floor needs its own scenting. The cleanest way to think about it is per floor: the lower social level and the upper sleeping level each get their own signature. In practice that means a diffuser for each floor's main area plus one per lived-in bedroom, so most duplexes land at four to six devices, or a waterless
Vaayu on each floor for whole-level coverage.
Should a duplex have a Vaayu on each floor?
For most duplexes, yes — it is the setup I recommend. A waterless
SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) per floor holds each level to a single consistent signature, covers large open areas that several Sukoons cannot fill evenly, adds no humidity and schedules itself by app. One downstairs for the social floor and one upstairs for the sleeping floor gives two clean scent zones, so the staircase never mixes them into confusion.
Why think in floors rather than rooms for a duplex?
Because a staircase acts like a chimney — scent rises from the lower floor and drifts up, so two random fragrances on two levels will meet in the middle and muddle. Assigning one clear signature per floor keeps the transition intentional: a fresh, welcoming scent downstairs where you host, a warmer, calmer one upstairs where you sleep. You notice the change as you climb, which feels deliberate rather than confused.
Can I just use lots of Sukoons in a duplex?
You can, especially in a drier city — four
Sukoons and a couple of
Boonds, run in sessions, will scent a duplex room by room and cost less than two Vaayus. The downsides are upkeep and humidity: that many ultrasonic tanks to refill is real work, and in a humid coastal home the combined moisture adds up. If either bothers you, consolidate each floor's open area into one waterless Vaayu and keep Sukoons only in the bedrooms.
How do I scent the staircase and landing in a duplex?
You usually do not need a dedicated device there. The staircase naturally carries scent between floors, so it catches whatever the two levels are running. If the landing feels flat, place the upper-floor diffuser near the top of the stairs so its scent greets you as you arrive. Keep both floors' fragrances in a related family so the stairwell, where they meet, always smells harmonious.
Two storeys, two signatures
Scent your duplex a floor at a time.
A waterless Vaayu per floor holds each level to one even signature with no dampness; add a Sukoon per bedroom for personal scents. Fresh below where you host, warm above where you sleep.
