An open floor plan turns several rooms into one shared body of air, and that reshapes how scent behaves.
Scent no longer stays put — it dilutes across the whole volume and drifts on the room's currents, which is exactly why an open plan wants the waterless
Vaayu rather than a per-room ultrasonic.
Quick answers — read this first
How does open-plan change fragrance? Scent spreads and dilutes across one big shared volume instead of staying in a room — so you size for the whole space, and choose throw over mist.
Does that mean I need more scent? You need better
dispersal, not more drops. The
Vaayu (₹11,999) throws across the volume; extra drops in a Sukoon don't.
Can I still use different scents by zone? Only where a wall separates them. In one open volume, a single signature is cleaner — multiple scents just collide.
The short answer
Short answer: An open floor plan makes scent behave as one diluted, drifting volume rather than a series of contained rooms — so you scent the whole space with a single signature and a tool built for throw, the
Vaayu (₹11,999), instead of a per-room
Sukoon.
The pick: the
SOSA Sukoon (₹1,799) ultrasonic diffuser plus a
Hotel Collection scent (from ₹299) is the hotel-at-home starter; a
Boond (₹799) suits a small room or desk, and for a large, open-plan or high-humidity space the waterless
Vaayu (₹11,999) adds no moisture.

Straight answer
How does an open floor plan affect home fragrance?
1. It merges rooms into one air volume. Living, dining and kitchen scent together — you can't fragrance one without the others.
2. It dilutes scent across the span. The same dose that fills a closed room reads faint spread over an open plan.
3. It lets currents move the scent. AC, fans and cross-breezes carry fragrance around — helpful with throw, hopeless with settling mist.
4. It rules out clashing zone scents. With no walls, two different signatures simply collide; pick one for the whole volume.
5. It points to cold-air, not ultrasonic. Throw and even coverage across a volume is the
Vaayu's job, not a Sukoon's.

One line: open plans dilute and move scent across one volume — scent it whole with the
Vaayu (₹11,999), one signature.
The three ways an open plan reshapes scent
1
DILUTION
One dose, spread thin over a big volume
Vaayu · large room₹11,999 In a closed 200 sq ft room, a few drops fill the space because the walls contain the scent. Knock the walls out and that same fragrance has three or four times the volume to fill, so it reads faint everywhere. The instinct is to add drops — but on an ultrasonic that just concentrates a pocket near the machine. What an open plan actually needs is a machine sized for the
whole volume, which is what the
Vaayu's 1000m³ rating means.
Tip: Size to length × width × height, not floor area alone.
2
DRIFT
Air currents move the scent for you — or past you
Sukoon · the diffuser₹1,799 Open plans have real airflow: air conditioning, ceiling fans, the pull between kitchen and balcony. That movement can spread scent evenly
if the diffuser produces a fine, dry cloud light enough to ride the currents. A heavy ultrasonic mist gets swept aside and dumped, leaving uneven patches. Cold-air atomisation works with the drift instead of against it — the same currents that defeat a Sukoon help a Vaayu.
Tip: Notice where your AC pushes air; a cold-air machine uses that as a delivery route.
3
ONE SIGNATURE
No walls means no room for two scents
Hotel Collection scentsFrom ₹299 Part of the joy of a closed-room home is a different Hotel Collection scent per room — White Tea Serenity in the bedroom, Quiet Luxury in the living room. An open plan removes that option: with shared air, two signatures don't layer, they clash. The elegant move is a single, gracious scent for the whole volume —
Warm Welcome or Quiet Luxury — carried evenly by one machine.
The hero of this guide SOSA Sukoon · 500ml Ultrasonic ₹1,799 A 500ml cool-mist ultrasonic diffuser with a 7-colour mood light and quiet, long runtime - the natural home for the Hotel Collection scents. Add a few drops to the water, choose continuous or intermittent mist, and one fill carries a room all evening. It gently humidifies too, which Indian air-conditioned rooms quietly love. Take the walls out of a home and you take the walls out of its scent. Fragrance stops being a room and starts being weather.

Sizes & how to use: every scent comes as 15ml (₹299, to try), 100ml (₹999, the value bottle) or 300ml (₹1,799, best per-ml); the 15ml
Pack of 7 (₹1,799) is the whole wardrobe. Add just 3-6 drops to the Sukoon's water tank and adjust to taste - a little goes a long way - and rinse the tank when you switch scents so each stays true. These are water-based, ultrasonic-safe fragrances made for SOSA diffusers; do not substitute raw essential or carrier oils, which can clog the misting plate. The scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by (not affiliated with) the named hotels. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
When the room is big or open-plan SOSA Vaayu · Waterless Cold-Air ₹11,999 The Sukoon is perfect for a bedroom or a normal living room; for a large, open-plan or high-ceilinged space - or if you want zero added humidity in already-humid coastal air - step up to the waterless Vaayu (up to 1000m³, app + timers). For a whole home, the ducted Aangan (₹25,999) carries one signature through every room. Compare Sukoon vs Vaayu →

Frequently asked questions
Do open plans need stronger fragrance?
They need better dispersal, not a heavier dose. Adding drops to a
Sukoon concentrates a pocket near the machine; a
Vaayu sized for the volume spreads a moderate scent evenly, which is what you actually want.
Can I use different scents in different open zones?
Not really — with shared air, two signatures collide rather than layer. Keep one gracious scent for the whole open volume, and save zone-specific scents for genuinely enclosed rooms.
Does air conditioning make it worse?
It disperses an ultrasonic mist faster, so a Sukoon fades quicker in an open, air-conditioned plan. A cold-air
Vaayu actually rides those currents, and adds no humidity — a good fit for AC homes.
How do I size for an open plan?
Measure volume: length × width × ceiling height in metres. Compare to the Vaayu's 1000m³. Open plans usually have higher ceilings, so the volume is larger than the floor area suggests.
Is an open plan just harder to scent?
It's different, not harder — once you match the tool to the volume it can smell wonderful and consistent throughout. The mistake is treating an open plan like a big room and reaching for a per-room diffuser.
Scent the whole volume
Fragrance an open plan as one even signature — with the Vaayu
The Vaayu (₹11,999) is sized for open volumes up to 1000m³; keep Sukoons (₹1,799) for the enclosed rooms.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the technique applies to any brand's ultrasonic system.
Facts verified August 2026: An ultrasonic diffuser disperses a water-based fragrance as a cool micro-mist, scenting a room without heat or flame and adding a little humidity. Great hotels use commercial HVAC scenting to create a signature smell; at home the same effect comes from a diffuser plus a hotel-inspired blend. SOSA Sukoon is a 500ml ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser with a 7-colour mood light (₹1,799); Boond is a 300ml mini ultrasonic diffuser (₹799); both run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. The Hotel Collection comes in seven scents (Ritz-Carlton, Westin, 1 Hotels, St. Regis, Shangri-La, Four Seasons and W Hotels styles) in 15ml (₹299), 100ml (₹999) and 300ml (₹1,799), plus 15ml Pack of 7 (₹1,799); dose 3-6 drops per tank, use SOSA diffuser fragrance only (not raw essential/carrier oils), and rinse between scents. For large, open-plan or high-humidity spaces the waterless SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³) adds no humidity; the Aangan (₹25,999) is a whole-home HVAC system. The scents are SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
