The complaint is always the same. A signature that read beautifully in the fit-out photographs now arrives mixed with whatever the unit opposite is running, and the instinct is to answer volume with volume. That instinct is the fastest way to lose a signature entirely, and the real levers sit somewhere far less satisfying.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I stop mall corridor smells competing with my store's signature scent? Work on the boundary, not on the dial. Two things influence what crosses your entrance: how air actually moves there, and whether your unit tends to push air out to the corridor or draw it in. Where the landlord allows it, keeping the unit slightly positive in pressure to the corridor means air moves outward at the threshold, and less of the corridor arrives inside. That is a matter for the mall's facilities team or a ventilation engineer to specify, not for a fragrance supplier. Beyond that, place your source deep in the unit and accept that some drift is outside a tenant's control.
Should I turn my fragrance up to overcome a neighbouring store's scent? No, and this is the one rule I would make absolute. Fragrances in a shared airspace do not fight and one does not win; they combine, and the combination reads as confused air rather than as either brand. Raising your level also raises what you export into the corridor, which makes the shared boundary worse for both of you and invites the neighbour to raise theirs. The result is a mall where nobody has a signature. Hold your level, place the source deeper inside your floor, and let your unit read clearly a few steps in from the threshold.
Can a scent machine cancel out a smell coming in from the corridor? No. We make no claim that any SOSA product removes, neutralises, absorbs or cancels an odour of any kind, including one arriving from a corridor, a neighbouring unit or a food court. A diffuser adds scent to a room; that is the whole of what it does. What genuinely reduces incoming drift is airflow at the entrance, the pressure relationship between your unit and the corridor, and the mall's own ventilation - all of which sit with the landlord's facilities team. Some drift will remain. A tenant should plan around that honestly rather than spend to deny it.
The short answer
Short answer: You cannot fix a corridor and no diffuser can. Influence the boundary instead: entrance airflow, and where the landlord allows it, a unit kept slightly positive in pressure to the corridor so air tends to move out rather than in. Specification belongs to the mall's facilities team or a ventilation engineer. Never answer a neighbour's fragrance by raising your own, and accept that some drift is outside a tenant's control.
The pick: No product solves this, so buy for your own floor rather than for the corridor. A locked, correctly placed SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) on a large floor, or a Mountain Breeze reed (₹849) set deep in a small unit.
Next step: Tell us what trades either side of you and where your entrance sits, and we will write the placement and the letter to facilities - ask for a store scenting plan.
The neighbour problem is a boundary problem and an honesty problem. It has never once been solved by a higher setting, and the attempt costs a store its signature.
Hold your register - the equipment that makes that possible
What actually stops a neighbouring store's fragrance arriving inside my unit?
Airflow at the boundary, and nothing you can buy from a fragrance company. Start with what is physically happening. Your unit and the corridor share an opening, usually a wide one, and air crosses it in whichever direction the pressure difference sends it. If your unit sits slightly negative to the corridor - which is common where a unit has strong extraction and modest make-up air - then corridor air is being pulled in continuously, and everything in it comes with it. If the unit sits slightly positive, air tends to move outward across the threshold and less of the corridor arrives inside. That is the whole principle, and it is worth understanding because it is the only lever with real authority. What I will not do is give you numbers for it. Pressure relationships, extraction rates and shared returns are matters for the mall's facilities team or a ventilation engineer, who can see the whole building's air balance rather than one tenancy; a supplier prescribing pressures across a shared system is doing something irresponsible. Take them a specific, written observation - which unit, which hours, which direction the air seems to move at your threshold - and let them specify. Then there is the rule I would make absolute: never answer a neighbour's fragrance by turning your own up. Scents in a shared airspace do not compete and neither wins. They combine, and the combination reads as confused air - and since customers are standing in your store, they attribute the confusion to you. Raising your level also pushes more of your fragrance into the shared corridor, which makes the boundary worse for both tenants and reliably provokes the neighbour to raise theirs. I have watched that spiral run for a year and end with two stores that no longer smell of anything identifiable. Instead: hold your level, move the source deeper into your own floor so the register establishes itself a few steps in from the threshold, keep your own sources clean - stockroom door, boxes, trying-area seating - so your unit has no competing smell of its own, and be honest that some drift is outside a tenant's control. We make no claim that any SOSA product removes, neutralises or absorbs a neighbour's odour, and none of this is a claim about sales, footfall or what anybody buys. Ask for a store scenting plan and tell us what trades either side of you.
Influence the boundary, hand the pressure and extraction specification to facilities, hold your own level, and accept that some drift stays.
The specification that matters against a noisy corridor is the key-lock. The SOSA Vaayu holds a chosen intensity across a shared boundary, runs under 38dB and mounts on a wall well back from the entrance line. ₹11,999.
Nothing on this page is bought to deal with a corridor, because nothing can be. These are the products that let a store hold one register cleanly on its own floor. Under 300 sq ft, a single reed placed deep in the unit. Between 300 and 750, reeds by zone or one Sukoon. The Vaayu from roughly 1,500 sq ft of connected floor, where its key-lock earns its place.
The key-lock is the reason this suits a mall floor. When something drifts in, the instinct of every staff member is to reach for the dial, and a locked setting turns that into a decision the owner makes deliberately rather than one that happens on a busy Saturday. Adjustable intensity, timers, under 38dB, waterless, wall or HVAC mount. ₹11,999.
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar - dry woods that sit under leather rather than trying to overpower anything. In a competitive corridor the temptation is a louder register; the better move is a clearer one placed further inside your own floor. Passive, silent, no power. From ₹849.
500ml ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft on 16-18 hours from the low setting, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. Water-based, so it adds a little humidity - fine in a dry hard-chilled unit, and the wrong choice in a coastal store through monsoon. ₹1,899.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank lasting up to 75 days, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India.
Three moves that genuinely change what crosses your entrance, and one that never does.
1
First, the boundary
Which way does air move across your threshold?
Stand at your entrance line on a trading afternoon and pay attention to which way the air goes. Most retailers have never checked, and it is the single most informative thing about their unit. If air is moving inward all day, your unit is drawing the corridor in and no fragrance decision will change that. If it moves outward, corridor air arrives only in gusts and the problem is smaller than it feels. Where the landlord allows it, the principle is to keep your unit slightly positive in pressure to the corridor, so that air tends to move out at the threshold rather than in. I will describe that principle and no further: the actual balance of supply, extraction and make-up air across a shared building is a matter for the mall's facilities team or a ventilation engineer. Take them your observation and let them specify.
Tip: a light ribbon taped at the entrance line for one trading day tells you more than an hour of argument with a supplier.
The SOSA Vaayu mounts well back from the entrance, which is where a shared-boundary unit wants its source anyway. ₹11,999.
Your unit's own smells make the neighbour's seem worse than it is
Before blaming the corridor, be sure the mixture is not partly yours. Most footwear stores carry three sources that arrive on the floor uninvited: the stockroom, which holds the highest density of new rubber, adhesive and cardboard in the building and vents onto the shop floor every time the door opens; boxes and tissue handled in the open at restocking; and the trying area, where customers remove their own shoes onto your seating and carpet. Fix those first - a self-closing stockroom door, boxes kept closed and moving, washable seat covers and a genuine cleaning rhythm. A unit with a clean baseline reads clearly even when something drifts in from outside, because the drift arrives as one identifiable thing rather than as the fourth ingredient in a mixture. This is ordinary retail housekeeping and it outranks every fragrance decision on this page.
Tip: if you would not want a customer to stand in your stockroom doorway, that is your finding and not the neighbour's fault.
Once the baseline is clean, one register is enough - Mountain Breeze from ₹849.
Never answer a neighbour's fragrance by raising your own
This is the rule I would put in writing for every store manager in a mall. Fragrances in one airspace combine rather than compete; the result reads as confused air, and because your customers are standing on your floor, they read the confusion as yours. Raising your setting also exports more of your fragrance into the shared corridor, which makes the boundary worse for both units and almost guarantees the neighbour raises theirs in return. Once that spiral starts it does not stop until somebody's staff refuse to work in it. Hold your level. Lock it if the equipment allows. If the incoming drift is genuinely intolerable, that is a facilities conversation and possibly a lease conversation, not a dial. And remember who the real test is: staff breathe both fragrances across a nine-hour shift. If the staff say it is too much, it is too much.
Key-lock and adjustable intensity together make holding a level a policy rather than a daily argument.
What works, what does not, and what is honestly outside a tenant's hands.
The SOSA plan
The corridor problem, sorted
The move
Whether it works
Entrance airflow and pressure
The real lever. Keeping the unit slightly positive to the corridor means air tends to move out rather than in. Specified by the mall's facilities team or a ventilation engineer, never by a supplier.
Clearing your own sources
Works, and comes first. Stockroom door, box handling, trying-area seating and cleaning give you a clean baseline so incoming drift reads as one identifiable thing.
Moving your source deeper
Works. A register that establishes itself a few steps inside the unit is far more legible than one fighting at the threshold.
Turning your fragrance up
Never works. The two scents combine, the mixture is attributed to you, and more of yours is exported into the corridor.
The clearer register, not the louder one: Mountain Breeze - Himalayan pine, sage and cedar - placed deep in the unit rather than at the threshold. From ₹849.
A fragrance arms race in a mall corridor has exactly one ending. Two stores that no longer smell of anything a customer could name, and staff in both who have stopped enjoying their shift.
Nothing here is sold as an answer to a corridor, because there is no such product. These are the ways a store holds one clean register on its own floor while the boundary work happens with the landlord. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
No SOSA product is offered as a solution to a neighbouring smell, and we make no claim that any of them removes, neutralises, absorbs or cancels an odour of any kind. Pressure, extraction and shared returns are matters for the mall's facilities team or a ventilation engineer; we describe the principle and hand the specification to them. Some drift is outside a tenant's control and should be planned around honestly. Fragrance is a brand and interior decision and we make no claim about sales, footfall, browsing time or purchase decisions. Ask for a store scenting plan.

A note from Sonal
I get this call most often from stores that opened well and then watched a new tenant move in opposite. The signature they were proud of is suddenly arriving mixed with something else, and the first question is always whether they should go stronger. I say no before they have finished the sentence, because I have seen where that road goes and it ends with two stores that smell of nothing in particular.
The useful conversation is duller. Which way does the air move at your threshold. Whether your own stockroom door is doing half the damage. Whether your source is sitting at the entrance line, where the corridor takes it, instead of deep inside the floor where customers actually stand. And then a letter to mall facilities describing what you observe and when, because pressure and extraction are their work to specify, not mine.
The limits, plainly. This is an ambience decision, and we make no claim that it affects sales, footfall or browsing time, and nothing about health or therapy. No SOSA product removes, neutralises or masks a smell that has a source, including a neighbour's. Some drift you will simply live with. Staff breathe both fragrances all day, so their judgement overrides mine. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
How do I stop corridor smells competing with my store's signature scent?
Work on the boundary rather than the dial. What crosses your entrance is decided by how air moves there and by whether your unit tends to push air out to the corridor or draw it in. Keeping the unit slightly positive in pressure to the corridor is the principle, and the specification belongs to the mall's facilities team or a ventilation engineer. Clear your own sources too, and accept that some drift is outside a tenant's control.
Should I use a stronger fragrance than the store next door?
No. Two fragrances in one airspace combine rather than compete, and the mixture reads as confused air which customers attribute to whichever store they are standing in. Raising your level also exports more of your fragrance into the shared corridor and invites the neighbour to raise theirs. Hold your level, place the source deeper inside your own floor, and lock the setting if the equipment allows it.
Can a diffuser cancel a smell arriving from the corridor?
No. We make no claim that any SOSA product removes, neutralises, absorbs or cancels an odour of any kind, including one arriving from a corridor or a neighbouring unit. A diffuser adds scent to a room and that is the whole of what it does. What reduces incoming drift is airflow at the entrance and the ventilation balance of the building, both of which sit with the landlord.
Where should I place my diffuser if the corridor is the problem?
Well back from the entrance line, inside the part of the floor where customers stand and sit. A source at the threshold is partly donated to the corridor and tempts you into a higher setting than the unit needs. Placed deeper, the register establishes itself a few steps in, which is where a customer forms an impression of your store anyway.
What if the mall will not change anything?
Then plan around it honestly. Clear your own sources so your baseline is clean, place your source deep in the unit, hold a level you chose on a full Saturday floor, and lock it. Some drift will remain and no equipment on the market changes that. It is better to run one clear register in imperfect air than to spend on a second machine that cannot reach the cause.
