Founder Diaries · Attar Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 11 min read Updated September 2026
Almost every awkward mentor gift comes from answering these questions in the wrong order - starting at the budget, which is the last one that matters, and never reaching the first one at all. The first question is not what to spend. It is whether a gift worn on the body belongs in this relationship, and the second is whether anything about you is currently in this person's hands. Get those two right and the rest is straightforward.
Quick answers — read this first
How do you choose a thank-you gift for a mentor without overstepping? Answer four questions in order. Does the relationship carry a gift worn on the body? Is every decision about you settled? Where will it be handed over? And what does the amount oblige them to do next? The budget is the last question, not the first.

Is it appropriate to give a teacher or mentor a fragrance? It depends on the relationship rather than the price. A fragrance is worn on skin, which suits a genuine mentoring relationship and does not suit somebody who is currently grading, recommending or supervising you. Where it does not fit, change the category rather than the size of the bottle.

Does a smaller bottle make a mentor gift more appropriate? It makes it cheaper. The same oil is in the 3ML at ₹379 and the 12ML at ₹1,149, and all of it is worn on skin, so the closeness is unchanged. If a worn gift is the wrong register, a reed diffuser from ₹749 is for a room instead, and a letter costs nothing.
The short answer
Short answer: Register first, timing second, setting third, amount last - and where a worn fragrance is the wrong register, change the category rather than shrinking the bottle.
The pick: an attar roll-on - 3ML ₹379, 6ML ₹669, 12ML ₹1,149. The same oil, sized to the relationship.
Honest note: a smaller bottle lowers the price, not the register - it is still worn on skin, so occasion and setting do the rest.
Attar gifting - at a glanceA smaller bottle lowers the price, not the register3ML ₹379 · 6ML ₹669 · 12ML ₹1,149 - the same oilOccasion and setting decide how a gift readsAlcohol-free · worn at the wrist
SOSA's four attars come in three sizes of the same oil: 3ML from Rs 379, 6ML from Rs 669 and 12ML from Rs 1,149. Buying the smaller bottle makes a fragrance gift affordable for a relationship that would not carry a Rs 5,000 perfume. It does not make the gift less personal - an attar is worn on skin at any size, so the occasion you give it at and the reason you chose it are what set the register.
Straight answer
How do you choose a mentor gift that is respectful and proportionate?
Four questions, and they have to be answered in this order, because a wrong answer high up cannot be fixed by anything below it.

One: does this relationship carry something worn? A fragrance goes on skin. That suits a mentor you know as a person - years of advice, calls taken, a relationship you both chose. It does not suit somebody whose connection to you is entirely a role: a lecturer you have spoken to twice, an examiner, a professor who wrote about you to an admissions committee. Where it does not fit, change the category. A reed diffuser from ₹749 is for a room, and a written letter is for anybody.

Two: is everything about you settled? References, marks, panels, promotions, selections. A gift after an outcome is gratitude. The same gift while the outcome is open reads as something else to everybody who is not you, and many universities and employers have written rules restricting what people in those positions may accept. This is professional respect rather than nervousness, and the fix is only ever a delay.

Three: where does it get handed over? In the open, attached to an occasion, with a reason you can say out loud. The same ₹669 bottle given at a dinner in front of other people and pressed on somebody privately with no occasion are two different gifts.

Four, and only now: what does the amount ask? A 6ML attar at ₹669 is where most of this sits - Adaa (bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac), Ameeri (Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron), Mastani (night jasmine, damask rose, oudh), Nawaab (white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood). A 3ML at ₹379 is the lighter marker beside a letter, and a 12ML at ₹1,149 is for a genuinely long relationship. No 12ML is under ₹1,000. If you would rather they chose, the three-attar set is ₹1,055 - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, fixed, without Adaa. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: register, timing, setting, amount - in that order, and the budget question is the one that matters least.
The same oil comes in three sizes, so buy the one the relationship carries: 3ML at ₹379 for a gesture, 6ML at ₹669 for the honest middle, 12ML at ₹1,149 when it should last. Worth knowing before you plan: no 12ML is under ₹1,000.

The four questions, in order

Three of the four questions do almost all of the work. Here they are with the reasoning underneath them.

1
Register
A smaller bottle lowers the price and leaves the closeness alone
This is the one most gifting advice gets backwards. An attar is worn on skin at 3ML exactly as at 12ML, so the small bottle is a cheaper gift rather than a more distant one. That means you cannot solve a closeness problem by buying less of the same thing. Where the relationship genuinely does not carry a worn gift - a current examiner, a formal lecturer, a professor mid-reference - the honest move is to change what kind of object it is: something for a shared room, a book, a donation, a letter. Where it does carry one, an attar at ₹669 is a good answer and needs no apology.
Tip: If a worn gift is too close, a smaller worn gift is still too close. Change the category.
2
Timing
After the outcome is a different act from during it
Any relationship where somebody assesses, grades, recommends or supervises you has a clock on it. Before and during, a gift sits next to an open judgement about you, and how it reads is not yours to decide. After, the same object is simply thanks for something finished. Waiting costs a few weeks and removes the entire problem - and it is also why plenty of institutions restrict gifts from students and reports in the first place, which is worth knowing before you put somebody in the position of declining one.
3
Setting and amount
Where you hand it over does more than the price does
Handed over at a dinner with a sentence about why you chose that scent, a modest bottle is obviously a thank-you. Given privately with no occasion, the same object makes the recipient wonder what it is for, and that wondering is the whole failure mode. Attach it to something. Then keep the amount in the band that asks nothing back - ₹379 to ₹1,199 covers every case on this page, and above about ₹2,000 a thank-you starts to oblige the recipient rather than thank them.
Tip: Attach it to an occasion and say the reason out loud. That does more than any amount of price-deliberation.
The SOSA principle
Start at the register, not at the budget. A smaller bottle lowers the price, not the register.
Which is why the first question is whether a worn gift belongs here at all, and the amount is the last thing you decide rather than the first.

Choosing the scent once the register is settled

Once the register and the timing are settled, the scent comes from something they actually said.

The SOSA gift edit
The mentor block at a glance, by relationship
Option Who it suits, and what it costs
A genuine mentor, nothing pending about you A 6ML attar at ₹679 with a letter - the default answer for this whole block.
A long relationship you want to mark properly A 12ML attar at ₹1,179 - the size somebody finishes. Never under ₹1,000.
They are assessing, grading or recommending you now A written thank-you now, and the object only once the outcome is settled.
The relationship does not carry a worn gift at all A reed diffuser from ₹749 for a room, or a letter. Changing category, not size.

The block splits into cases from here. A mentor who asked nothing is the one about proportion when the help cannot be repaid; A professor who recommended you is the sharpest timing case and routes to a letter; They can afford anything is what to do when price has stopped carrying information; A retiring teacher deals with a gift arriving in a pile of forty; and Book, chocolates or scent compares the three obvious options honestly. The four attars and the trio are the range behind all of it.

Not sure what will land right?
Send us the relationship, the occasion and your budget - and anything they have actually said about fragrance. If a worn scent is the wrong register for that relationship, we will say so rather than sell you one.

The budget is the last question. Most people start there and never reach the first one.

The SOSA home fragrance gift edit
Five answers by what the relationship carries - from a ₹379 gesture to a ₹1,199 bottle
Gift Best for What it says, and what it costs From
Attar 3ML Under ₹500 · a small gesture The same oil as the larger sizes. A host gift, a thank-you, an add-on to something else ₹379
Attar 6ML ₹500 to ₹1,000 · the honest middle Where most of this gifting actually sits - substantial without being a statement ₹669
Attar 12ML ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 · lasts The size somebody finishes rather than samples. Note it is never under ₹1,000 ₹1,149
Attar trio, 3ML x 3 When you want them to choose Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani - a fixed set of three. Adaa is not in it ₹1,055
Solid perfume tin 15g When a roll-on is not right Solid balm in a metal tin - nothing to spill, nothing to leak in a bag ₹500

Four honest notes. There is exactly one reed diffuser combo on the store - Morning Freshness paired with Evening Calm, in two sizes. If the point of the gift is letting the recipient choose their scents, that means two single reeds, and they arrive as two boxes rather than one set; we would rather say so than pretend a wider combo range exists. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, sold as 300ML and 500ML refills of each scent; the Hotel Collection is a separate water-based fragrance for ultrasonic mist diffusers, and SOSA Safar takes its own waterless nebuliser oil - three systems, none interchangeable. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Vaayu, Angaan and Meenar are whole-space machines held in single or double-digit quantities, so they are an enquiry rather than an add-to-cart, and we quote no lead times we cannot keep. A note from Sonal

There is a gap in gifting that almost nobody sells into honestly. You want to give somebody fragrance - a colleague who covered for you, somebody you have been seeing for six weeks, a cousin you are fond of - and every option in front of you is either a keyring or a four-thousand-rupee bottle. The keyring says nothing. The bottle says far too much.

That gap is the reason we sell the same oil in three sizes. A 3ML at ₹379, a 6ML at ₹669, a 12ML at ₹1,149 - identical composition, identical concentration, different amounts of it. Buying the smaller bottle is not buying a lesser version. It is buying the right amount for the relationship.

But I want to be straight about what size does and does not change, because a lot of gifting advice gets this backwards. A smaller bottle lowers the price. It does not lower the register. An attar is worn on skin at any size, and choosing a scent for somebody is still a choice about how they smell. What actually makes a gift proportionate is the occasion you attach it to, whether you hand it over in front of other people, and whether you picked it from something they actually said. Get those right and a ₹379 bottle lands perfectly. Get them wrong and no size fixes it. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a fragrance is too personal for a mentor?
Ask whether the relationship exists outside the role. Years of advice, calls taken, a connection you both chose - that carries a gift worn on the body. A lecturer who knows your name from a register does not, and in that case the answer is a different kind of gift rather than a smaller bottle of the same one.
Does a smaller bottle make a mentor gift more appropriate?
It makes it cheaper. The same oil is in the 3ML at ₹379 and the 12ML at ₹1,149, and every size is worn on skin, so the closeness does not move. Use size to set the amount, and use the category to set the register.
When should I give the gift if my mentor is writing me a reference?
After the outcome is known. While a decision about you is open, an object sits beside that decision in other people's eyes however you meant it, and many institutions restrict what people in those positions may accept. Send your thanks in writing at the time, and give the gift when the result is in.
How much should I spend on a mentor or teacher?
₹379 to ₹1,199 covers every case in this block - the 6ML at ₹669 to ₹699 is the usual answer, and no 12ML attar is under ₹1,000, since they run ₹1,149 to ₹1,199. Above about ₹2,000 a thank-you starts to oblige the recipient, which is the opposite of the point.
What do I do if their institution does not allow gifts?
Write instead, and write well. A specific letter, or a note to their head of department about what their teaching did for you, cannot be declined or declared and often matters more professionally than an object would. Where something physical is still wanted afterwards, a reed diffuser from ₹749 is for a shared room rather than a person.
