Every owner of a three-row vehicle eventually runs an experiment on it, usually by accident, usually by turning the setting up each time the back row complains. This is the version that teaches you something and does not end with the front unbearable.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I compare three rows fairly? Hold one setting constant and write it down, send a fresh nose into each row, change one variable per round, make every adjustment parked, and record each round. The weakest seat does not get to set the output.

What is the ratchet, and how do I stop it? Back row says weak, you raise it, front says strong, you lower it a little, and the next journey starts higher than the last. Stop it with a ceiling agreed before round one, and the rule that air and placement change before the setting.

Do I need a SOSA Safar to run this? No. The method works with any source. SOSA Safar simply gives you two clean dials, a speed and a timer, so that one change is genuinely one change.
The short answer
Short answer: One setting held constant, a fresh nose per row, one variable per round, every adjustment parked, everything written down, and a ceiling agreed first. That is the whole method.
The pick: Nothing, to begin with: the method is free. If you then want a setting that can go down as well as up, SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 has three speeds and a one, two or three-hour timer.
Next step: Run round one, parked, and send us the sheet in words, who sat where and what each said. We will tell you which variable to change next. Ask for a car fragrance recommendation.
One setting, one variable, one fresh nose per rowHold one setting constant and write it down before anyone sitsA fresh nose per row, and three plain words, not a scoreOne variable per round: air first, then placement, then settingSafar from Rs 3,999 - a speed dial and a timer, kept apartPark every adjustment, and set a ceiling the weakest seat cannot pass
The method laid out as a ladder. The rungs near the top cost nothing and are done parked. The setting is the bottom rung, and a ceiling agreed in advance stops anyone climbing past it on the way.
Straight answer
How Can I Test Fragrance Performance Across Three SUV Rows Without Repeatedly Increasing Output Based on Whichever Seat Smells Weakest?
Hold one thing still and learn one thing at a time. Done parked, with a sheet of paper, it takes no equipment and it does not ratchet. Here is the method in five steps, and the table below turns it into a routine you can run on an ordinary morning.

1. Fix one setting and write it down before anyone sits. The scent, the speed and the timer, the AC mode, the fan speed, the zones that are open, and where the unit sits. Whatever is on the sheet is constant for the session, so a difference between rows cannot hide behind a change.

2. Send a fresh nose into each row. The person who has just sat down in a row is the instrument for that row. The driver is the worst instrument in the vehicle. Ask three plain words, faint, right or strong, and ask what faint means before you act on it.

3. Change one variable per round, in a fixed order. Air first, then placement, then the setting last. After each change the row that complained gets a new fresh nose. Two changes at once teach you nothing about either.

4. Park every adjustment, and park every complaint. If someone says weak halfway, it goes on the sheet and becomes the question for the next round. Nothing is touched while the vehicle is moving, and a complaint is not an instruction.

5. Agree a ceiling before round one. The highest speed you will allow, and a front-row veto: if the front says strong, no request from the back overrides it. SOSA Safar has three speeds and a timer, so the ceiling is a setting you can name.

You are not trying to make three rows agree. You are trying to find the lowest setting at which nobody says strong and the quietest row is faint but present.
Hold one setting constant, a fresh nose per row, one variable per round, every adjustment parked, all of it written down, and a ceiling agreed first. Air and placement change before the setting on SOSA Safar.
If you want two clean dials to hold constant and change one at a time, that is what SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 is for: three speed settings and a one, two or three-hour auto-off timer, set separately, cordless on a 2000 mAh Type-C battery, up to ten hours continuous or thirty intermittent per charge. Cold diffusion of pure undiluted oil, no water, no heat.

The products, and where each fits

The method needs no purchase at all. These three are only here for the owner who wants cleaner dials, a source that is the same at every round, and a way to settle scent preference separately from strength. None is sized to a cabin, because SOSA publishes no cabin figure for Safar.

The one with two dials you can hold constant
SOSA Safar
₹3,999 for SOSA naturals trio, ₹4,499 for hotel-inspired trio. Three speed settings from light to intense and a one, two or three-hour auto-off timer, set separately, so a change to one leaves the other alone. Fully cordless on a 2000 mAh Type-C battery, up to ten hours continuous or thirty intermittent. Cold diffusion of pure undiluted oil, no water, no heat. Aroma only; it does not humidify.
From ₹3,999
The cheap way to settle scent before strength
SOSA Car Perfume Sprays Discovery Set
₹699 for pack of 3 to ₹799. A pack of three car perfume sprays, so the family can argue about which scent is liked before anyone is asked how strong it is. Liking and strength are different questions, and a comparison that mixes them cannot be read. Choose the scent once, hold it constant, and judge strength afterwards.
From ₹699
What Safar runs on, and why you top up before round one
SOSA Waterless Nebuliser Refills
₹1,049 for 100 g, ₹1,849 for 300 g. Pure, undiluted, water-free oil for cold-air nebulisers, in sixteen scents: seven hotel-inspired and nine SOSA naturals. Refill life depends on the speed setting and the hours run, so a method that holds the speed low is simply a longer-lived bottle. Top up Safar's small bottle from a 100 g refill before you begin.

Three disciplines behind the method

Three cards, one for each thing the method asks you to give up: changing things, trusting the driver's nose, and acting on a complaint. This is reasoning about how to run a fair comparison, not a result.

1
One
One setting held constant: the discipline is in what you refuse to change
The reason owners learn so little from their own vehicles is that everything changes at once. A different journey, a different passenger, a fan one step higher because the driver was warm, a unit moved to the other cup-holder, and a setting nudged up as well. When the back row then says it is better, there are five explanations and no way to choose between them. So the method begins with a sheet. Before anyone sits, write the scent, the speed, the timer, the AC mode, the fan speed, the zones open and the place the unit sits, and agree that nothing on the sheet moves until you decide it does. A comparison across three rows is a comparison of the rows, and it only reads as one if the setting is genuinely the same.
Tip: The sheet is a list of things you refuse to touch. If you cannot write a line on it, that line was never constant.
SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 keeps speed and timer as two separate dials, so one change really is one change, made parked, with the other left exactly where the sheet says it is.

Two
A fresh nose per row: the judge is the instrument
A nose sitting in a steady smell stops reporting it. That is ordinary and it happens to everybody, which is why a driver and a passenger who has just sat down give opposite answers in perfect good faith. For this method the judge is the instrument, so choose it on purpose: for each row, the person who has most recently arrived in it. Ask for three words, faint, right or strong, not a score, and ask what faint means. Absent is an air problem. Quieter than the front may need no fix at all. If you are alone, be honest about it: your own verdict is a record of your own nose, which has been in the cabin the longest, and it is the least reliable reading on the sheet.
Tip: Ask before you say what changed, and write down the words exactly as they are given, not as you remember them.
Settle the scent first. The discovery set of three at ₹699 for pack of 3 to ₹799 lets the family agree what they like, so that later 'too strong' means strong and not unwelcome.
See SOSA Car Perfume Sprays Discovery Set →
3
Three
One variable, parked, written down: how not to ratchet
The ratchet works like this. The back row says weak, so you raise the setting. The front says strong, so you lower it a little, but not as far as it was. The next journey starts higher, and nobody wrote down where it began, so you cannot tell how you got here. Each turn only goes one way. The defences are dull and they work. A ceiling agreed before round one, so the setting cannot rise without a decision. A fixed order of change, air first, then placement, then the setting last. Every adjustment made parked, and every complaint made into the next round's question, not an instruction. And a sheet, because a ratchet cannot survive being written down.
Tip: If the setting has gone up, the sheet should say which round it went up in, and why the air and the placement were ruled out first.
Top up before round one, not between rounds, so the source is the same each time. SOSA Waterless Nebuliser Refills are ₹1,049 for 100 g, ₹1,849 for 300 g, and refill life depends on the setting and the hours run.
See SOSA Waterless Nebuliser Refills →
The SOSA principle
Chasing the weakest seat is not a method. It is a ratchet with a fragrance attached, and the only way to stop it is to decide, in writing, what you are not allowed to change and how high you are not allowed to go.
Which is why the useful question is never whether the back row is satisfied. It is whether one thing changed, whether the judge was fresh, and where the ceiling is.

The protocol, step by step

This is a protocol, not a result. Written as a routine so that you run it in your own vehicle, parked, and reach your own conclusion. SOSA has run no test of it and this page quotes none. A round is a parked session at the start of an ordinary journey.

The SOSA protocol
Five steps, parked, and what to write down at each one
The step, and what it holds still What to do, parked, and who judges
Round zero: fix the constants and write them down
Scent, speed, timer, AC mode, fan speed, zones open, unit position, and the ceiling. Top up the source. Nothing on the sheet moves until you decide it does. View →
Each round: settle, then arrivals in a fixed order
Engine on, AC running, machine started as you normally would. Wait for the same landmark every time: the last row feels ordinary. Then passengers arrive, third row first, in the same order each round.
Each row: one fresh nose, three plain words
The newest arrival in each row says faint, right or strong, and what faint means. Write the words exactly. The driver writes, and does not judge.
Between rounds: one change, parked, in a fixed order
Air first, then placement, then setting last. One change only, made parked, and noted. The next round starts from fresh arrivals, not the same people still seated.
At the end: the ceiling and the stopping rule
Stop when nobody says strong and the quietest row is faint but present. If the ceiling is reached with a row still absent, the answer is air or a second source, not more output.

A sheet of paper and a few parked mornings is not a laboratory and it is not meant to be. What it gives you is a vehicle in which only one thing changed at a time. If you want to know what to try first, the diagnostic order for a strong front and a weak third row ranks the variables. For the question of whether a driver, a second row and a third row can be compared at all, read comparing the driver's seat, second row and third row at the same setting, and for why the highest speed is not automatically the right one, testing intensity settings without assuming the highest is best. If you would rather describe your sheet and have us read it, send us your constants and what each row said.

Your own sheet, read by a second pair of eyes
Send us the constants and what each row said, in words, and we will tell you which variable to change next and where to put the ceiling.

You are not trying to make three rows agree. You are trying to find the lowest setting at which nobody says strong.

The SOSA specification for the method

Three rows, three roles in the comparison: the source with its dials, the oil that keeps it the same each round, and the set that takes scent out of the argument. No cabin size appears in this table, because SOSA publishes none for Safar.

The method is free and any source will do. A hanging freshener has no setting, so for one the variables are placement and freshness, from ₹449 to ₹509 depending on the scent, and 15 ml refills are ₹399 for 15 ml, Lemon or Jasmine, ₹429 for 15 ml, Sandalwood, Lavender or Icy Mint. If you want a source whose output can go down as well as up, Safar is ₹3,999 for SOSA naturals trio, ₹4,499 for hotel-inspired trio, and what you are buying is control, not reach, because SOSA publishes no cabin figure for it and nobody should give you one. It is aroma only and does not humidify; it does not dehumidify, dry a cabin or do anything about damp either, and if the vehicle smells of something, find the source first, let air through, and let a professional look at anything soaked. SOSA is not affiliated with any vehicle manufacturer and makes no health, wellbeing or driving-related claim of any kind. Settings are changed parked. Ours is a contact page and a person who replies: Ask for a car fragrance recommendation and send us your sheet.

A note from Sonal

I have watched this ratchet happen to people I like. A family buys something, the back row says they cannot smell it, the setting goes up, the front says it is too much, and within a month nobody can say what the setting started at. They are not careless. They are doing what anybody does with a complaint, which is to answer it, and the answer is always the same one, more.

So I ask people for a sheet of paper. It feels absurdly low-tech for a fragrance house to say so, but a sheet is the only thing I know of that stops a ratchet, because the ratchet depends on nobody remembering where it began. I do not have a measurement to quote you about three rows, and I am not going to improvise one. What I can give you is a way to learn it about your own vehicle, and the right to say that the weakest seat does not get to decide.

Safar is not required. A hanging freshener works with this method too, and if that is your answer, I am happy with it. Where Safar helps is that a speed and a timer are two dials you can hold apart, and a ceiling is something you can actually name. I have no published figure for its reach and I will not make one up. Frequently asked questions

Why not turn it up until the back row says yes?
Because the front is nearer the source, so every rise lands there first, and the back row usually gains far less than the front loses. The back row saying faint is often about the air or the placement, not the output. Change those first, parked, and keep a ceiling so that a complaint is never an instruction.
Can I run this on my own, with no passengers?
You can run it, but be honest about what it records. Alone, you are one nose that has been in the cabin the longest, so the sheet records your own reading and not the rows. Use it to hold the constants steady, then ask a family member to be the fresh nose for a round, and write their words down exactly as given.
Do I have to leave the vehicle between rounds?
No. What matters is that each row's judge has just arrived, so a different person, or the same person returning for a new round, is a fresh nose and someone who has been seated throughout is not. If you cannot arrange that, say so on the sheet; your record is then about a coarser question, and that is fine.
Does it matter that the settled landmark is not a clock time?
No, and it is deliberate. A landmark such as the last row feeling ordinary is the same event each round, whatever the weather or the parking, while a clock reading is not. What matters is that it is the same moment every time and that it is on the sheet, so that rounds can be compared with each other.
Can I change the setting while driving if someone complains?
Please don't. Settings are changed parked, with the handbrake on. A complaint made on the move goes on the sheet and becomes the question for the next round. A single adjustment made parked teaches you more than three made in traffic, and it keeps the method honest.
