Which suits somebody who says they dislike perfume? Icy Mint Rs 489 or Lemon Rs 499 - both read as a clean car rather than a scented one.
Which is the most traditional? Sandalwood Rs 479 - a real sandalwood register rather than a sweet approximation, and widely liked in India.
What each of the five actually smells like, and who it suits
Take the five in turn, because a name and a price tells you nothing about what an hour in the car will actually be like. Jasmine at four hundred and forty-nine rupees is the cheapest car product in the shop and the most familiar register of the five. In India jasmine is not an exotic perfume note, it is an everyday smell - flowers in a temple, in hair, at a wedding - and that familiarity is exactly why it works as a gift for somebody who is suspicious of scented things. It reads as a recognisable flower rather than as perfume, and it is a particularly good choice for an older recipient or for a family car where several generations travel. Because it is a floral, it is more comfortable in a car kept out of direct sun. Lavender at four hundred and seventy-nine is the quiet all-rounder and the one to choose when you genuinely cannot find out where the car is parked. It sits between the fresh group and the warm group: herbal rather than sweet, calm rather than sharp, and it does not turn syrupy in warmth the way a sweet composition will. Nobody is startled by it, which in a shared car is a considerable virtue. Sandalwood at four hundred and seventy-nine is the traditional choice and the most grown-up thing available under five hundred rupees. It is a genuine sandalwood register - warm, dry, woody - rather than a sweetened approximation of one, and it is widely and reliably liked in India, especially by people who do not think of themselves as caring about fragrance at all. The one condition is the parking: a warm woody register belongs in a car kept in a basement, covered society parking or a shaded compound. In a car standing on a road all afternoon, heat pushes the warm heavy parts forward and it becomes heavier than anybody wants. Icy Mint at four hundred and eighty-nine is the coolest thing in the entire range and the safest single guess if you know nothing about the recipient. It is not sweet, not floral and not perfumed - it reads as cold air and clean surfaces, which is why it is the answer for the very common recipient who says they do not like car fresheners. What they usually mean is that they dislike sweet, cheap and strong, and Icy Mint is the opposite of all three. It also holds up better than anything else in a car that spends the day in the sun. Lemon at four hundred and ninety-nine is the straightforward citrus and the other answer for a car in the sun. Where Icy Mint reads as cold, Lemon reads as clean - the smell of a car that has just been wiped down. It suits somebody tidy, somebody who keeps the car spotless, and anybody who wants the interior to feel fresh rather than furnished. Citrus registers are also among the least likely to bother a passenger, which matters in a car that carries colleagues or family. Underneath all five sits the physics, and it is worth repeating because it overrides preference. A car holds a few cubic metres of sealed air, sits in the sun and reaches temperatures nothing in a house comes close to, and the occupants are strapped in and cannot walk away from anything. Heat pushes sweetness and weight forward while burning the light fresh parts off first. That is why the two warm options here - Jasmine and Sandalwood - are conditional on parking, and why the two cool ones are safe almost everywhere. One unit is the right dose for an ordinary car; two is usually too much by May. And placement decides longevity: never in front of an air conditioning vent, where a gentle continuous release becomes a blast every time the fan runs and the product empties in a fraction of the time it should, and never in the driver's line of sight. A door pocket or a rear grab handle is steadier and lasts far longer. Just above this band, for completeness: Vetiver, Sea Breeze and Oud are five hundred and nine rupees each - Vetiver the driest and most grown-up of the eight, Sea Breeze the cleanest marine, Oud the richest and most conditional on covered parking. The Mysore Orange Blossom car perfume spray is five hundred and forty-nine and works only when applied. The discovery set of three sprays is six hundred and ninety-nine and hands the decision over entirely. And refills at three hundred and ninety-nine to four hundred and forty-nine rupees make the best second gift a few months later, because replacing a fading car perfume is the errand nobody runs. Timing follows the standing rule of this cluster regardless of what you spend: do not give car fragrance in the first weeks to cover the new-car smell, because owners like it and it fades on its own as the interior settles. Month two or three is honest. And the boundary that holds everywhere here: fragrance is a finishing touch, never a fix.

| Gift | What it suits | Why it works for a new car | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jasmine hanging car perfume | The entry gift · ₹449 | The cheapest car item in the range and a complete gift on its own - floral rather than sweet, and best in a car that is parked in shade | ₹449 |
| Icy Mint hanging car perfume | Safest in Indian heat | Cool and dry, which is the register that holds up after an afternoon in the sun - the one to choose when you are guessing | ₹489 |
| Vetiver hanging car perfume | Somebody who dislikes sweet | Earthy and dry, the most grown-up of the eight, and the least likely to tire over a long daily commute | ₹509 |
| Car discovery set (pack of 3) | You do not know their taste | Three sprays so the owner picks - the sensible move, because a car is the least forgiving fragrance space there is | ₹699 |
| Mysore Orange Blossom car spray | Somebody particular about the car | Applied by hand when they want it rather than working continuously - which suits an owner who controls everything about the interior | ₹549 |
| SOSA Safar waterless car diffuser | Hours a week behind the wheel | The premium car object almost nobody buys for themselves - and it should be given with a nebuliser refill rather than empty | ₹3,999 |
Versailles
We sell a lot of car fragrance and we talk people out of buying it more often than you would expect. The reason is always the same. Somebody has just taken delivery, the car has that specific smell of a new interior, and the instinct is to buy something to put in it straight away. Please do not. Most owners like that smell, it fades on its own within a few weeks, and something arriving on top of it reads as though you thought their new car needed fixing. Month two or three, once it has started to smell of ordinary use, is the moment - and it has a second advantage, which is that everybody else has finished congratulating them by then.
The other thing people get wrong is the register. A car is not a small room. It holds a few cubic metres of air, it sits sealed in the sun for hours, and heat does something to sweetness that has to be experienced to be believed - and unlike a room, the driver cannot walk away from it. Dry, green, citrus and marine compositions behave. If you are guessing, guess cool. And one is the right number: two of anything in a car is usually too much by May.
Two honest things. Fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix - if a car smells of damp, of something spilled under a seat or of smoke, deal with the cause and then scent a clean car, because adding one to the other is worse than either alone. And our Vaayu is not a car product. It is a waterless nebuliser built for roughly a thousand cubic metres - a showroom rather than a vehicle or a flat - and we would rather say so than sell you one.
