Why Delhi smog actually ruins perfume — the science nobody talks about

Every October my Delhi clients message me the same thing: "Sonal, my perfume just stopped working." Not the heat — they survived May at 44°C. Not humidity — the monsoon ended weeks ago. Something else. And the answer is in the air quality dashboard.

When AQI crosses 300, the air over Delhi is carrying roughly 15× the WHO-recommended particulate matter — PM2.5 and PM10 that physically suspends in every cubic metre you walk through. Fragrance is a volatile system: aromatic molecules evaporate off your skin, ride air currents, and reach noses around you. The moment those molecules collide with suspended particulate, two things happen. (1) The lightest, most volatile molecules — citrus, aldehydes, green top notes, watery aquatics — get adsorbed onto particles and damped. (2) Cold winter air (Delhi mornings sit at 8–14°C) slows molecular movement, so what does evaporate moves shorter distances. Heavy boozy gourmand can feel cloying behind an N95. Solid balms solve this elegantly: alcohol-free, low-projection, but built on dense, warm materials that bloom upward when you remove the mask. Cost-per-wear in pollution season — the maths nobody runs

A 100ml bottle of Sauvage Elixir at approx ₹18,000–₹22,000 retail, used at 3 sprays/day, lasts roughly 330 wears. That's ₹55–₹66 per wear. The first time I understood what Delhi smog does to perfume, I was in CP in late October 2019.
