Does a monsoon fragrance help with a musty smell? In moist air they move more slowly and stay in the room longer, and they settle on soft surfaces that are themselves holding moisture, which then release them again. The practical effect is that a setting which reads as gentle in a dry Delhi December reads as thick in a wet Mumbai July. This is why so many people conclude that their diffuser has become too strong in the rains when nothing about the machine has changed. The correct response is not a different machine, it is a lower intensity, a shorter cycle and a lighter fragrance family. Start by dropping one step and shortening the run, and judge it by walking in from outside rather than by sitting in the room, because your own nose adapts within minutes.

Vanilla, amber, tonka, caramel, coconut and the whole dessert-like gourmand family are built on rich, sweet, tenacious materials. They are lovely in cool dry air, where they read as warmth. Humid air moves scent more slowly and holds it longer, and it holds the heavy sweet materials longest of all. What I recommend for an Indian monsoon is almost always drier, cooler and more mineral: wet stone, clean linen, green tea, vetiver, cedar, a light citrus lift.
