The desk is the wrong place to put it

A home office is a room with an unusually specific constraint: one person occupies one chair in it for eight or nine hours, and that fact governs everything about how fragrance should be arranged. It is quite different from a living room, where people move through and sit in various places, or a bedroom, which is mostly occupied in the dark and largely unconscious. Here there is a fixed nose at a fixed point, and the design question is what that nose experiences over a long day. Adaptation is the first thing to understand and the least intuitive. Olfactory adaptation means that a steady smell fades from perception fairly quickly - within about an hour for most people at a moderate level - and stays faded until the person leaves the room and comes back. This is not a fault in the product, and it is not the fragrance running out, which is the most common misreading. It means that whatever you put in a working room is being perceived properly by the occupant for the first hour of the day and after each break, and by nobody else the rest of the time. The consequence for placement is direct: the answer to not perceiving it is not more of it, because more simply raises the level for everybody who walks in while the occupant still adapts. Distribution is the second. A source placed on a desk creates a concentrated column of fragrance around one chair and leaves the rest of the room comparatively empty, which is the opposite of what a room-fragrance product should do. Moving the source three or four metres away lets the fragrance disperse into the volume of the room before it reaches anybody, which is both more even and, at the same dose, more pleasant. Near the doorway is often the best position of all, because it puts the strongest expression at the point where somebody enters and perceives it freshly. The third consideration is new and now unavoidable, which is that a great many people at home desks spend hours on video calls. Ultrasonic diffusers work by vibrating water into a mist and they make a soft continuous working noise. At two metres it is inaudible on a call. At thirty centimetres from a microphone it may not be.
