Founder Diaries · Diwali Gifting · For Couples
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 11 min read Updated August 2026
A gift to a couple has a structural problem that a gift to a person does not, and almost nobody names it. Most “couple” gifts are a gift to one of them with the other one standing there being pleasant about it. The scented candle is really for her; the whisky glasses are really for him; the framed photograph is for whoever cares more about photographs. So the question is not what a couple would like. It is what shape a gift has to have before two people can genuinely both own it — and a two-bottle duo at ₹1,498 to ₹1,598 is the cleanest answer I know.
Quick answers — read this first
The answer: a reed diffuser duo — two 50ml bottles in two different registers. Day & Night ₹1,498 is the safest, Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548 is best for genuinely different tastes, Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598 is the richest.

Why a duo rather than one nicer bottle: it scents two rooms rather than one, and it prioritises neither person’s taste. Nobody has to defer, and nobody has to pretend.

What not to buy for a couple: a personal fragrance. An attar or a perfume is a gift to one of the two people, whatever the packaging says — that is a gift for a spouse to give, not for you to give to a couple.

The honest gap: there is no SOSA gift hamper, gift box or curated gift set. The duo is the nearest thing and is honestly a two-bottle product. There is also no gift card, no verified gift wrap or gift note, and no room spray.
The short answer
Short answer: a reed diffuser duo, ₹1,498 to ₹1,598 for two 50ml bottles. It is the correct shape for a couple's gift for two reasons that have nothing to do with fragrance. It arrives as two objects, so neither person has to be the recipient and neither has to be the audience; and it goes into two rooms, so the household gets a change rather than one person getting a possession. Day & Night at ₹1,498 pairs Morning Freshness with Evening Calm — the two least polarising scents we make — and is the right choice when you do not know their tastes.
Pick the pairing by what you know: Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548 pairs bright citrus with pine, sage and cedar and is the answer when the two of them clearly want different things. Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598 pairs rose-jasmine with Coorg coffee and vanilla and is the richest. In 130ml × 2 the same three are ₹2,498, ₹2,548 and ₹2,598. If they love hotels, the Sukoon ₹1,899 is a single object two people share equally.
Shop: duos 50ml × 2 from ₹1,498; 130ml × 2 from ₹2,498; single 50ml reeds ₹749–₹849 if the budget is more modest; core 80g jar candles ₹379 single and ₹664 for a two-pack. Six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, alcohol-free, nothing to plug in. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
What is the best Diwali gift for a couple?
1. Buy a duo — two 50ml reed diffusers, ₹1,498 to ₹1,598. The shape is the argument. Two bottles cannot become one person's possession, they go into two different rooms, and neither of the two people has to defer to the other's taste in order for the gift to work. Almost nothing else in the gifting world has that property.

2. If you do not know their tastes, buy Day & Night at ₹1,498. Morning Freshness at 9.0 and Evening Calm at 8.9 are the two lowest-risk scents in the range — bright and soft, no cultural loading, nothing anybody argues about. Bright goes in the kitchen or bathroom, soft goes by the bed.

3. If their tastes are genuinely different, that is an argument for a duo rather than against one. Fresh & Grounded at ₹1,548 puts Malabar lemon in one room and Himalayan pine, sage and cedar in another. The person who finds citrus too busy gets the study; the person who finds cedar too austere gets the kitchen. This is the pairing I recommend most often for a couple who disagree, and disagreeing is normal.

4. Do not buy a personal fragrance for a couple. An attar, a perfume or a solid body perfume is a gift to one of two people wearing a bow that says both. It is a lovely gift for a husband to give a wife or a wife to give a husband, because that is a relationship in which the personal is permitted. It is the wrong gift from anybody else, and the packaging does not change it.

5. Buy up in size before you buy up in category. If ₹1,498 is not enough, the same three pairings in 130ml × 2 are ₹2,498, ₹2,548 and ₹2,598 and run fourteen to eighteen weeks per bottle instead of six to eight. That is the premium version of the same correct shape, rather than a different and riskier gift.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, composed in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: a duo, ₹1,498–₹1,598 for two 50ml bottles. Two objects, two rooms, neither person's taste prioritised. Day & Night ₹1,498 when you are guessing, Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548 when their tastes differ, Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598 when you want the richest. Never a personal fragrance for a couple. There is no gift hamper — a duo is the nearest thing and is honestly two bottles.
SOSA Day & Night reed diffuser duo
The correct shape for two people
Day & Night duo · Morning Freshness + Evening Calm ₹1,498
Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus at 9.0, with Kashmir lavender and chamomile at 8.9 — the brightest of the safe scents and the softest thing we make. It is the lowest-risk duo in the range and the one I recommend when you do not know a couple's tastes: neither bottle has cultural loading, neither is sweet, and neither is a scent people hold opinions about. Bright in the kitchen or bathroom, soft by the bed. Also in 130ml × 2 at ₹2,498.

The two-recipient problem, stated plainly

Every gift has an owner, and the trouble with a couple is that you are trying to name two. What actually happens with most “couple” gifts is that ownership resolves silently within about a week — the candle migrates to her side of the house, the bar accessory ends up being his, the cushion cover joins whoever makes the decisions about cushion covers. Nobody says anything and nothing is wrong, exactly; the gift simply turns out to have been for one person all along, and the other one thanked you for something that was never theirs.

1
FAILURE ONE · THE SILENT OWNER
One object always resolves to one person
SOSA Fresh & Grounded reed diffuser duoFresh & Grounded duo₹1,548A single object has a single owner, and the arithmetic is not negotiable. Two objects have two, and that is the whole mechanism. It is why a duo works and a nicer single bottle does not, even at the same price: ₹1,548 spent on two bottles is a structurally different gift from ₹1,548 spent on one. One of them can be divided and the other cannot, and division is the specific thing a couple's gift needs to survive. This is also why I would rather sell two 50mls than one 130ml here, even though the 130ml lasts longer and looks more impressive on a shelf.
Do this: ask who will still be using it in a month. If the honest answer is one name, it is not a couple's gift.
2
FAILURE TWO · THE TASTE VETO
One scent means one of them is being polite
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuserMountain Breeze₹849Two people in one flat rarely have the same fragrance preferences, and the difference is usually not subtle — one of them thinks florals are lovely and the other thinks they are oppressive, or one wants sweet warmth and the other wants nothing sweet anywhere. A single bottle forces a verdict, and somebody loses quietly. Two bottles in two registers dissolves the argument entirely, because each register gets its own room. Shaan D. in Chennai described exactly this in reverse: his partner “usually hates anything ‘masculine’” and yet asked him to refill the Mountain Breeze — a shared-room miracle, he called it. Most couples do not get one, and do not need one if the gift has two bottles in it.
Do this: if you know they disagree about fragrance, buy the duo whose two halves are furthest apart, not the one in the middle.
3
FAILURE THREE · THE PERSONAL GIFT
A perfume is a gift to one person in a couple, always
SOSA Evening Calm reed diffuserEvening Calm₹799This is worth being firm about because the category is tempting and the mistake is common. An attar, a solid perfume or any fragrance for skin is a statement about a body, and a couple does not have one. It belongs to whichever of the two it was chosen for, and the other person is an observer of the gift rather than a recipient of it. That is perfectly fine within a marriage — a husband or wife may absolutely give one, and it is one of the few relationships in which the personal register is welcome. From a sibling, a friend, a colleague or a parent, to a couple, it is the wrong shape. A home fragrance has no such problem, because its subject is a room and a room genuinely belongs to both of them.
Do this: keep personal fragrance for gifts between the two of them, and keep your gift about the house they share.

Why a duo is the correct shape, and not merely a bigger gift

There is a second reason for two bottles that has nothing to do with fairness and everything to do with how a nose works. A home that smells identical in every room stops smelling of anything within about a week. The nose adapts fastest to the constant, and a single fragrance distributed evenly through a flat is the definition of constant — which is why people who own one very good diffuser often report that it “stopped working” when what actually happened is that they stopped noticing. Two registers in two rooms defeats that permanently: you re-notice the bedroom every time you come into it from the hall, and you keep re-noticing it for as long as the bottles last.

For a couple this compounds neatly with the ownership argument, because the two rooms a duo usually goes into are the two rooms they use differently. Bright citrus belongs where the day starts — a bathroom, a kitchen, a hall. Soft lavender belongs by a bed. Green cedar belongs wherever somebody works or reads. So a duo is not simply two of a gift; it is a small piece of zoning for a two-person home, and zoning is the thing people who like their houses eventually discover on their own and are delighted to be given early. If you are wondering whether to go up to the 130ml versions at ₹2,498 to ₹2,598, the question is only room size: 50ml suits up to about 150 sq ft, 130ml above it.

One further practical note, since a gift to a couple often arrives in a house that is busy. A reed diffuser asks nothing of anybody: six fibre reeds go into the bottle once — three if the room is small — and after that there is nothing to plug in, nothing to fill and nothing to remember to switch off. During the specific week when a household is receiving twenty gifts and hosting on top of it, a gift that requires no action is worth considerably more than one that requires a decision. And on the honest side: there is no SOSA gift hamper, gift box or curated gift set. The duo is the nearest thing that exists and I would rather describe it accurately as two bottles that arrive together than dress it up as something it is not.

The three duos, in one row
The SOSA principle
A single object resolves to a single owner within a week. Two objects have two owners, permanently.
Which is why ₹1,548 spent on two bottles is a structurally different gift from ₹1,548 spent on one — and only one of them can be shared.

Where crockery, a hamper or a box of sweets is still the right gift

The traditional gifts to a couple deserve a fair hearing, because several of them pass the two-recipient test perfectly well. Crockery, glassware and things for a table are genuinely shared objects — they are used by both people, at the same time, for the same purpose, and they last for years. That is a real answer to the problem this page is about, and the only caution I would offer is the one every couple will tell you themselves: a home has a finite number of cupboards, and by a certain stage of a marriage the crockery problem is a storage problem rather than a crockery problem. And sweets are a ritual. Where the box is going to be opened and passed around, where the greeting is supposed to take an edible form, arriving with something cleverer instead is a small act of self-regard dressed up as thoughtfulness.

What none of those does is survive the specific arithmetic of this festival. The same household both gives and receives roughly twenty gifts inside one week, most of them edible and most of them identical, and a couple's front door sees the whole of it. So the failure mode is not that your gift is disliked — it is that it cannot be told apart from the other eleven, and it is finished before the week is. A two-bottle duo is not duplicated by anybody, it is still working in the new year, it needs no cupboard and it obliges nobody to display anything. Take the sweets for the evening because the evening genuinely asks for them, and give the thing that lasts separately.

Most couple gifts are a gift to one of them with the other one standing there being pleasant about it. Two bottles cannot do that.

A note from Sonal

The duos began as a commercial idea and turned into something more useful than I expected. The original thought was simply that people scenting a whole flat needed two bottles rather than one large one, because a home that smells the same everywhere stops registering as smelling of anything within a week — the nose adapts to the constant, and evenness is the enemy. That is still the technical reason they exist.

What I did not anticipate is how often they are bought as gifts for two people, and once I saw the pattern the logic was obvious. Two bottles cannot become one person's possession. They go into two rooms and they carry two registers, so a couple who disagree about fragrance — which is most couples, and it is not a problem — both get what they want without either of them having to be polite about it. I now think that is the single most useful property of the format, and it has nothing at all to do with perfumery.

The thing I would gently discourage is buying a couple a perfume. It is a lovely gift between the two of them; a husband or a wife may absolutely give one, and it is one of the few relationships where a fragrance for skin is entirely welcome. But from anybody else it is a gift to one of two people with a ribbon on it, and everybody in the room knows which one. Make your gift about the house, because the house is the thing they genuinely both own. Everything is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl’s classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Diwali gift for a couple?
A reed diffuser duo — two 50ml bottles, ₹1,498 to ₹1,598. It is the correct shape because it arrives as two objects rather than one, so neither person becomes the sole owner, and it goes into two rooms in two registers, so neither person's taste is prioritised. Day & Night at ₹1,498 is the safest when you do not know their tastes; Fresh & Grounded at ₹1,548 is best when they clearly want different things.
Why a duo rather than one larger, more impressive bottle?
Because one object resolves to one owner. A single 130ml bottle at ₹1,299 and a duo at ₹1,498 are close in price and structurally different as gifts: the duo can be divided between two people and two rooms, and the single bottle cannot. There is also a practical reason — a home that smells identical everywhere stops being noticed within a week, so two registers keep working long after one would have faded into the background.
Is a perfume or attar a good gift for a couple?
Not from you. A fragrance for skin is a statement about a body, and a couple does not have one — it belongs to whichever of the two it was chosen for, and the other person becomes an observer of your gift. It is entirely appropriate between them: a husband or wife may absolutely give an attar in 6ml or 12ml, ₹669–₹1,199. From a sibling, friend, colleague or parent, keep the gift about the home they share.
Is there a SOSA gift hamper or gift set for couples?
No. There is no SOSA gift hamper, gift box or curated gift set of reed diffusers, and no gift card, verified gift wrap, gift note or personalisation. The nearest thing is a duo, and I would rather describe it accurately as two bottles arriving together than dress it up. It is also worth knowing that no reed diffuser appears in any existing gifting collection — those collections are candle-only — so the right link is always the individual product page.
Which rooms should the two bottles go in?
Bright citrus where the day starts — a bathroom, kitchen or hall. Soft lavender by the bed. Green cedar wherever somebody works or reads. Floral in an entryway or a living room. Use 50ml for rooms up to about 150 sq ft and 130ml above that, and use the reeds as the volume dial: six for a living room, three for a bedroom, two in a small bathroom, where a 50ml will then run close to three months.
