Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. A machine cannot push scent through a closed bedroom door, and it never will - so a partitioned villa is not one scenting problem but several, and honest sizing means saying so out loud rather than selling you one machine and hoping. Scent the volume that is genuinely open to itself, then give the closed rooms their own quiet answer, usually a reed diffuser. Fragrance never substitutes for ventilation or cleaning. If a room smells damp, stale or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it first; scent added on top of that only makes a more complicated bad smell. A home is not a lobby you pass through. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. In a villa that usually means the entrance, the living room and the dining as one connected space, with the closed rooms handled separately and quietly.

If I only remember one thing from this guide, what should it be?
Start earlier, not stronger. Almost every mistake hosts make with home fragrance is a version of compensating with intensity for something that was actually a timing or a cleaning problem. The house smells of nothing at half past seven, so the setting goes up - but the silence was your own adaptation, since you have been home all day and your nose stopped reporting hours ago. The room feels like it needs more once thirty people are in it, so the setting goes up - but what a crowded room needs is a deeper reservoir built earlier, because the front door keeps opening and scented air is continuously leaving. The hall smells lovely and the dining room smells of nothing, so the setting goes up - but that is a gradient caused by a late start, and it evens out with time rather than with power. Meanwhile every notch upward tends not to come back down, which is how a house drifts into being overpowering while the people who live there genuinely cannot detect it. Earlier is free, reversible and works. Stronger is none of those things.
What is the minimum I should buy if I entertain often but do not want a machine?
Do the free half properly and then spend Rs 749 at a time. The free half is genuinely most of the result: clean the sources the day before, run the extractor during and well after cooking, deal with the shoe cabinet and the doormat at the front door, empty the bins, wash the soft furnishings that have absorbed weeks of dinners, and cross-ventilate the ground floor in the afternoon before you close and cool the house. How do I stop the house smelling of four different things by nine at night?
Choose one direction and make everything else quiet or neutral, because a nose reads several unrelated pleasant smells at once as confusion rather than as richness, and that is the most common reason a well-appointed house smells busy during a party. In practice this means an audit rather than a purchase. Whatever is running in the connected volume is the house's voice. The reeds behind closed doors should be in the same family as that voice, so a doorway is not a change of subject. The bathroom gel, the plug-in in the passage, the scented candle somebody gave you at Diwali and the room spray under the sink are the problem, and the honest answer is to retire them rather than to balance them. Two exceptions are entirely reasonable: discreet functional freshening in a bathroom, and whatever is burning at the puja space, which is a ritual rather than a competing fragrance and belongs to a different part of the house and a different part of the evening. Unscented candles are always fine and are what you actually wanted from candles at a table anyway.
Does any of this change for Diwali or a big festival evening?
The scale changes and the rules do not, though two Indian specifics are worth naming. First, festival evenings usually mean far more cooking, often for two days beforehand, and cooking is a source rather than a smell to be covered - so the extractor discipline and the soft furnishings matter more than usual, since curtains, rugs and sofa fabric hold a heavy tempering for days and release it slowly back into the room. Cross-ventilate the ground floor properly in the afternoon rather than sealing the house from morning. Second, diyas, incense and flowers are all in the air on the same evening, and marigold in particular is a strong presence in a room. None of that is a problem to solve, it is the evening itself, and your register's job is to sit underneath it rather than to compete with it - which argues for the clean dry choices and for a lower setting rather than a higher one. The rest is unchanged: start the schedule well ahead so the connected volume is settled before the first car, keep it below the level anybody would name, and put a reed in the guest bathroom, since forty people will visit it.
