Everything in the reed range fits: ₹749, ₹799, ₹799, ₹849, ₹849. Against ₹1,000 a head that is ₹1,000 − ₹749 = ₹251 spare at the bottom and ₹1,000 − ₹849 = ₹151 at the top. Against a ₹10,000 total it is ₹2,510 and ₹1,510 respectively.
What the headroom is for: spares, not upgrades. 12 × ₹749 = ₹8,988 gives you ten gifts and two on the shelf. Upgrading a few people to 130ml at ₹1,249 breaks the per-head ceiling you set.
The one to avoid buying blind: Fresh Brew at ₹849. Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla is the most polarising thing we make. It is wonderful for someone who wants it and genuinely wrong for someone who does not.
2. Work out your headroom before you spend it. ₹1,000 − ₹799 = ₹201 a head, which across ten is ₹2,010. At ₹749 it is ₹251 a head and ₹2,510 across ten. That is real money and it is easy to fritter, so decide now what it is for.
3. Spend the headroom on spares rather than on upgrading a few people. 12 × ₹749 = ₹8,988 buys your ten and two held back for whoever appears unannounced. Upgrading three names to 130ml at ₹1,249 breaks the ₹1,000 rule you came here with and creates a visible tier if any of the ten compare.
4. When the ten are strangers, buy for breadth of acceptance, not for quality. These are not the same axis. The composition I am proudest of is not the one I would send to ten unknown flats. Safety here means the fewest strong reactions in either direction.
5. Avoid Fresh Brew on a blind list. Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla at ₹849 is the strongest and most divisive thing we make. It is a superb gift for someone you know wants warmth, and a genuine misfire for someone who does not.
6. A machine fits the ceiling but is the weaker blind gift. A Boond at ₹899 is 10 × ₹899 = ₹8,990 and needs a socket, water and a Hotel Collection refill to keep going. Ten unverifiable sockets is ten chances to be wrong.
7. Take the two wrong names off before you multiply. A home with a toddler who can reach a shelf, or a person who has said they dislike fragrance indoors — those two get an Everyday Beautiful Mug at ₹474 or a ceramic trinket dish at ₹664 instead, and the multiplication runs on the remaining eight.
Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Part one — the ceiling is not the constraint
Most people who arrive at this question have set ₹1,000 as a ceiling and expect to be told what compromises it forces. There are none. The reed range runs ₹749 to ₹849 for 50ml, so the ceiling is cleared by every scent with money left over, and the only real decision is which composition to repeat ten times. That is an unusual position to be in on a Diwali list and it is worth using properly, because the three things that go wrong at this size have nothing to do with price.
Fresh Brew₹849 · 50mlOnce a list reaches ten, you have almost certainly stopped knowing the recipients individually. That should change the axis you shop on. The composition a perfumer is proudest of is rarely the one to send into ten unseen flats, because pride correlates with distinctiveness and distinctiveness is exactly what produces a strong negative reaction in the one person it does not suit. Fresh Brew at ₹849 is the clearest example in our own range — Coorg coffee over Kerala vanilla, the warmest and most present thing we make, and the one I would give to a friend whose taste I know exactly. Ten times, blind, it is the wrong instrument. Buy for the smallest chance of a strong no, and accept that this means buying something less interesting than you would choose for yourself.Part two — what ₹1,000 a head buys, ten times over
Everything SOSA sells that fits a ₹1,000 per-head ceiling, multiplied by ten, with the headroom left against a ₹10,000 total and the risk of buying it for ten people you do not know. No price appears here for any gift category outside our own range.
| What fits under ₹1,000 | Unit | Ten of them | Left of ₹10,000 | Risk with ten strangers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Garden Bloom 50ml ★ | ₹799 | ₹7,990 | ₹2,010 | Lowest. Rose and jasmine draws the fewest strong opinions |
| Morning Freshness 50ml | ₹749 | ₹7,490 | ₹2,510 | Low. Bright citrus; can read oddly in a home where the kitchen runs all day |
| Evening Calm 50ml | ₹799 | ₹7,990 | ₹2,010 | Low. The softest we make; some find lavender too quiet to notice |
| Mountain Breeze 50ml | ₹849 | ₹8,490 | ₹1,510 | Medium. Dry pine and cedar answers the anti-floral objection but can read cold |
| Fresh Brew 50ml | ₹849 | ₹8,490 | ₹1,510 | Highest in the reed range. Warm coffee and vanilla is the most divisive thing we make |
| Boond ultrasonic machine | ₹899 | ₹8,990 | ₹1,010 | High. Needs a socket, water and a refill — three things you cannot verify |
| Cloud ceramic trinket dish | ₹664 | ₹6,640 | ₹3,360 | Low, but it is a permanent object on somebody's shelf rather than a consumable |
| Everyday Beautiful Mug | ₹474 | ₹4,740 | ₹5,260 | Lowest of all, and correspondingly smaller in scale than ₹1,000 implies |
| The honest caveat: a ₹1,000 per-head ceiling was almost certainly arrived at by multiplication rather than by thinking about any one of the ten people. That is a perfectly reasonable way to plan a list, but it means the ceiling carries no information about what any individual should receive. Before you multiply, check the list for the two or three names that do not belong on it — someone who works for you, someone in a single room with a small child, someone who has told you they dislike fragrance at home. Those come off and get handled separately. The multiplication then runs on what is left. | ||||

Part three — the two names that should leave this list
Almost every ten-name list contains two names that should not be bought for by multiplication, and finding them before you order saves more than any price comparison will. The first is anyone who works for you — house help, a driver, a guard, someone who cleans the building. Cash is flexible, it is the established convention and it is what most people in that position would choose. A gift alongside the cash is a courtesy and a good one; a gift instead of cash is a substitution nobody asked for. If you want to hand something over as well, keep it small and identical across everyone in that group, and hand the envelope over first and separately.
The second is the household where a bottle of fragrance oil standing in an open vessel is simply the wrong object. A single room shared with a toddler, a home with a cat that gets onto every surface, a flat where the only free shelf is above the stove. A reed diffuser wants a clear surface at roughly waist-to-chest height, out of direct sun, away from a fan or an air-conditioning vent, and out of a child's reach — and if you cannot picture that surface in their home, buy them something else. An Everyday Beautiful Mug at ₹474 or a Cloud trinket dish at ₹664 both sit comfortably under your ceiling and neither asks anything of the room. A candle is not the substitute here, because a candle asks for supervision.
There is a third thing worth saying, which is about timing rather than names. A house during Diwali is already carrying diyas, incense, flowers, frying and a stream of visitors — it is at maximum fragrance without any help from you. A diffuser given now is really for the fortnight afterwards, when the house goes quiet again, and that is worth mentioning as you hand it over rather than letting the recipient open it in the middle of the noisiest week of the year and conclude it does nothing. It is also worth passing on one handling fact: fragrance oil is flammable, so the bottle belongs on a surface well away from any lamp or candle. Neither of those is a caveat about the product. They are simply true, and a page that leaves them out is not being helpful.
Part four — the five scents ranked for a blind list of ten
All five compositions, ordered by how safely they can be bought ten times for people you do not know. This is a ranking of breadth, not of quality — the order would be entirely different if you knew each recipient.
| What you actually know | Buy ten of | The multiplication | What can still go wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nothing at all — ten names, no homes seen ★ | Garden Bloom 50ml | 10 × ₹799 = ₹7,990 | Someone who dislikes floral entirely. It is the smallest group of the five |
| Nothing, and the per-head figure matters | Morning Freshness 50ml | 10 × ₹749 = ₹7,490 | Bright citrus sits oddly beside a kitchen that runs all day |
| They are mostly older, or living in small flats | Evening Calm 50ml | 10 × ₹799 = ₹7,990 | Softest in the range, so a few people will not register it at all |
| They have said, as a group, that they dislike floral | Mountain Breeze 50ml | 10 × ₹849 = ₹8,490 | Pine and cedar can read as cold or masculine to some recipients |
| You know each of the ten well and they like warmth | Fresh Brew 50ml | 10 × ₹849 = ₹8,490 | The most divisive thing we make. Never buy this one blind |
| You want ten gifts and two spares on the shelf | Twelve of whichever you chose | 12 × ₹749 = ₹8,988 | Only buy spares in a scent you would keep for your own house |
| Two of the ten cannot take a bottle at all | Eight bottles, plus two mugs | 8 × ₹799 = ₹6,392, plus 2 × ₹474 = ₹948, so ₹7,340 | Do this only where the eight and the two will not compare |
Versailles
People are often surprised when I steer them away from the composition I would defend hardest in a room full of perfumers. Fresh Brew is, technically, the most interesting thing we make. Coorg coffee sitting over Kerala vanilla, and it holds its shape through a plateau that most warm compositions cannot manage on a reed. I would not send it to ten people I have never met, and I say so on every page where the question comes up.
That is not modesty about the product. It is that a blind list is a different problem from a gift. When you know somebody, distinctiveness is the whole point; when you do not, distinctiveness is just a wider spread of outcomes, and across ten names a wider spread means more misses. Buying for breadth feels like buying something duller. It is not. It is buying the right instrument for a situation where you have no information.
The other thing I would say about ten names is that the ceiling you set is doing less work than you think. Every bottle we make fits under ₹1,000, so the money is not deciding anything. What decides the outcome is whether you took the two wrong names off the list before you multiplied. Everything is made in Pune in small batches, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
