SOSA commercial scenting
A new building has no memory attached to it yet - which is the opportunity, and the trap
◆ ◆ ◆
What we answer
"Sales gallery opening while construction continues on the same site."
Dust, paint and new-material odour come first. Fragrance over curing paint is a cover-up
Construction phase
What we specify
"Double-height experience centre with a full glass facade facing west."
Height and afternoon solar gain both change the job; measure volume, not floor plate
New-build volume
What we answer
"Developer asks whether scenting should be in the HVAC drawings."
If the building will be scented at all, yes - retrofitting around a finished ceiling is the expensive route
Design stage
What we specify
"Sales gallery and the sample apartment next door."
Different jobs. The gallery is a brand space; the sample flat should smell like a home, or like nothing
Two spaces
What we specify
"New brand with no existing customer memory to build on."
Then consistency from day one matters more than distinctiveness - pick something you can hold for years
New identity
What we specify
"Developer with several projects wanting one recognisable scent."
One fragrance, output set per building - and commit before the first project opens, not the third

Three reasons, and a practical test at the end. The short version is that these smells fix themselves given ventilation and time, which almost nothing else in this series does.
Quick answers — read this first
Why address construction and new-material odours before fragrance? Because they resolve on their own with ventilation and time, because fragrance sits alongside them rather than replacing them, and because visitors read the combination as concealment - which is worse than the original smell in a sales environment.

How long does a new building take to stop smelling new? It varies with materials, ventilation and temperature, and it is measured in weeks rather than days. Rather than guessing, use the test: come in from outside first thing in the morning before the ventilation has run, and see what the room smells of.

Does running the AC speed it up? Only if it is bringing in fresh air. A system recirculating the same air keeps whatever is being released in the building. Ventilation means exchange with outside, not just air movement.
The short answer
Short answer: They resolve themselves with ventilation and time, fragrance cannot replace them, and buyers read the combination as concealment.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a contained gallery or reception, the Aangan at ₹25,999 where scenting rides the building's own HVAC, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your drawings, ceiling heights, glazing, HVAC design and opening date - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
Why should construction dust, paint and new-material odours be addressed before fragrance is introduced?
Three reasons. One: they are temporary, and almost nothing else in commercial scenting is. Paint, adhesives, sealants, joinery, engineered board, carpet and upholstery release for a period after installation and then largely stop. Given genuine ventilation and time, the problem solves itself - which means spending money to cover it is spending money on a problem that was leaving anyway. Two: fragrance does not replace a smell, it accompanies one. Ambient scenting adds a scent to the air; it does not neutralise what is already there. So a gallery running a machine over fresh paint does not smell of fragrance - it smells of fresh paint and fragrance, which is two pieces of information rather than one. Three: the audience is unusually alert. Property buyers are making a large, cautious, once-in-a-decade decision, and they arrive looking for what is being managed. A room that smells of both a new building and a deliberate fragrance invites exactly the conclusion you do not want, which is that something is being covered. Ventilation is the actual fix, and it has to be exchange with outside rather than recirculation - an air conditioner moving the same air around keeps everything that is being released inside the building. The test for readiness: arrive first thing in the morning, before the ventilation has run, having come in from outside, and smell the room. If it smells of nothing, it is ready. If it still smells of the building, wait, and ventilate harder. Then a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 on fragrance from ₹299 is doing what it is meant to. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: it fixes itself with ventilation and time, fragrance only adds a second smell, and buyers read the pair as concealment.
There is nothing to buy until the building is ready. When the morning test comes back clean, a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 with fragrance from ₹299 does exactly what it should - and not a week earlier.

Three reasons, and a timeline

This is the one problem in the series that resolves itself, which changes the economics of covering it up entirely.

Why this works
Getting a new building ready
1 Ventilate with outside air, not recirculated air - exchange, not movement 2 Let materials finish releasing; it is weeks rather than days 3 Where possible, let new furniture and textiles off-gas before installation 4 Use the morning test before switching any fragrance on
For a new gallery the usual specification is a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, or an Aangan at ₹25,999 where it is designed into the HVAC at fit-out stage. Fragrance from ₹299 - introduced once the building has finished off-gassing.
01
Reason one
The problem is leaving on its own
Almost every other odour issue in commercial premises has a persistent source - drains, waste, extraction, occupancy - and will not improve without intervention. New-building smell is the exception: it decays. Spending on a machine to cover something that is going to stop anyway is the least efficient purchase in this whole category, and the correct response is ventilation and patience, both of which are cheaper than equipment and more effective.
Tip: You would be paying to cover a problem that is already leaving.
02
Reason two
Addition, not replacement
People assume ambient fragrance neutralises. It does not - it adds. In a room with an existing smell the result is both, perceived together, and the brain separates them easily because one is obviously a product and the other is obviously a building. What a visitor takes away is not a pleasant room but a room where somebody has tried something. The same mechanism is why fragrance is the wrong answer to drains, to solvent and to a stale reception, and it is worth understanding once rather than relearning per situation.
03
Reason three
Your visitors are the most alert audience you will get
A property buyer walking into a sales gallery is doing the most careful evaluation of their year. They check finishes, ask about specification, look for what the brochure has not said. That is precisely the mindset in which a covered smell becomes evidence rather than a detail - and for a developer, an impression of concealment is expensive in a way that no ambience benefit offsets. A gallery with clean, honest, neutral air is in a stronger position than one with a fragrance and a question hanging over it.
Tip: A covered smell becomes evidence, not a detail.
The SOSA principle
New-building smell is the one odour problem that leaves on its own, which makes paying to cover it the worst value in this category.
Ventilate, wait, then use the morning test.

How to tell when the building is ready

When the building is genuinely ready, the register is chosen for the years ahead rather than the launch, which is covered in the sales gallery chapter.

Ventilation Exchange with outside air - recirculation keeps everything in the building
Time Weeks rather than days, depending on materials, temperature and airflow

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

The SOSA commercial range
Sized by air volume, not by ambition - from a ₹749 reed diffuser to the ₹38,500 Meenar

SOSA Aangan Large premises, or scenting carried on the building's own HVAC HVAC-mount nebulising machine, 800ml, roughly 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft, under 42 dB ₹25,999
SOSA Meenar Hotels, large showrooms, venues, corporate floors The largest machine in the range, specified for roughly 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft ₹38,500
Hotel Collection fragrance The fragrance the machines actually run on Seven scents, 15ml / 100ml / 300ml. SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand from ₹299
Honest notes for new commercial spaces: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Construction dust, curing paint, adhesives and new-material off-gassing are resolved by ventilation and time, not by fragrance - introducing a scent over them masks a condition rather than finishing it, and visitors generally recognise the difference. Ceiling height and glazing change the air volume and the thermal behaviour of a new building substantially, so sizing is done from drawings and measurements rather than floor area. SOSA makes no claim that scenting influences sales or enquiry conversion. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. SOSA's paid on-site walkthrough is ₹1,500 and is Pune only - everywhere else, including Vijayawada, Guntur and the Amaravati region, sizing is done remotely over WhatsApp from your own measurements. SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser
The small-room option Sukoon ultrasonic diffuser ₹1,899 A 500ml water-based cool-mist diffuser for a single cabin or a small desk. It adds a little humidity to the room, which is the reason it is not the choice for a monsoon-season space. See full specs →Size it on WhatsApp

A note from Sonal

New buildings are the only case where I tell people to think about scent before the fit-out rather than after, and it is a practical point rather than a romantic one: if a building is going to be scented at all, that belongs in the HVAC conversation while the ceiling is still open. Retrofitting around finished plaster is how a simple decision becomes an expensive one.

But there is a trap in new construction, and it is the one I see most in fast-building regions. A new space smells of itself - curing paint, adhesives, new textiles, site dust drifting in. Putting fragrance on top of that is not scenting, it is masking, and visitors read it accurately. Let the building finish off-gassing, ventilate properly, then introduce a scent you intend to keep.

Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Frequently asked questions

Why address construction and new-material odours before fragrance?
Because they resolve on their own with ventilation and time, fragrance adds a second smell rather than replacing the first, and visitors read the combination as concealment.
How long does a new building take to stop smelling new?
Weeks rather than days, depending on materials, temperature and ventilation. Use the morning test rather than a fixed schedule.
What is the morning test?
Arrive first thing, having come in from outside, before the ventilation has run, and smell the room. If it smells of nothing, it is ready. If it smells of the building, wait.
Does running the air conditioning help?
Only if it brings in outside air. A system recirculating the same air keeps everything being released inside the building - ventilation means exchange, not movement.
Why does this matter more for a sales gallery?
Because property buyers are an unusually alert audience making a cautious decision, and an impression of concealment costs more than any ambience benefit offsets. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Facts verified September 2026: Fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. In new construction, dust, curing paint, adhesives and new-material off-gassing are addressed by ventilation and time; ambient fragrance introduced over them masks a condition rather than resolving it. Ceiling height and glazing materially change a building's air volume and thermal behaviour, so sizing is carried out from drawings and site measurements rather than floor area.
