SOSA commercial scenting
In a hospital the honest answer is often no - and where it is yes, it is the lobby and nothing beyond it
◆ ◆ ◆
What we answer
"Facility manager asks whether the wards and corridors can be scented to deal with a persistent odour."
No. A persistent odour is a ventilation, drainage or housekeeping finding and belongs to that team
Not a fragrance job
What we specify
"Main entrance lobby, double height, doors opening onto a busy road all day."
This is the one zone usually worth discussing, and only after infection control has signed off
Lobby only
What we specify
"Day-care surgery centre wants reception to feel less institutional."
Reception can be considered as a separate air volume; clinical areas stay out entirely
Day-care surgery
What we answer
"Hospital asks whether scenting can reduce infection risk or improve air quality."
It cannot, and we will not say that it does. No health or air-quality claim is made for any product
No claims
What we specify
"VIP lounge on a separate floor with its own AC and closed doors."
A genuinely separate volume, so it can run its own low setting without affecting anything else
VIP lounge
What we answer
"HVAC is shared across clinical and non-clinical zones through common returns."
Then the honest recommendation is not to scent at all until the zoning is separated
HVAC decides

There are four reasons, and this is a fragrance company writing them down. If the reason you are reading this is a smell in your building, the useful outcome of this page is a work order rather than a purchase.
Quick answers — read this first
Why is strong fragrance a bad solution for hospital odour? Four reasons. It conceals a signal facilities need; it does not merge with the odour but sits alongside it as a second smell; staff adapt to it within minutes while arriving visitors do not; and a hospital population includes people who are nauseated, post-operative or in treatment, for whom strong fragrance is actively unpleasant.

What should a hospital do about a persistent odour instead? Treat it as a facilities finding. Investigate drainage and dry traps, waste handling and routing, laundry, ventilation rate and balance, filter and drip-tray condition, and housekeeping frequency. The odour is usually pointing at one of those precisely.

Does that mean a hospital can never use fragrance? No, but the sequence matters. Once there is no odour to conceal, a non-clinical lobby on separate air with infection control's written agreement can carry a low background - a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999. Fragrance finishes a clean building; it does not rescue a struggling one.
The short answer
Short answer: It hides a signal, it reads as two smells rather than one, staff adapt while visitors do not, and some of your population is already nauseated.
The pick: nothing, in most of the building. Where a non-clinical public lobby is genuinely separate air and infection control agrees, the machine for that one zone is the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your lobby dimensions, ceiling height, HVAC type and what your infection-control policy already says - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
Why is strong fragrance a bad solution for hospital odour problems?
Four reasons, from a company that sells fragrance. One: an odour is information. A persistent smell in a healthcare building is usually pointing precisely at a dry drain trap, a waste route, a laundry path, a ventilation imbalance or a housekeeping gap. Covering it removes the signal your staff use to notice the problem, and the underlying fault continues unobserved. Two: fragrance does not combine with an odour into one pleasant smell. It sits alongside it. What people perceive is two smells at once, and they interpret that combination correctly as concealment - which is a worse impression than the original odour on its own. Three: the people deciding the level cannot judge it. Staff adapt within about fifteen minutes, so the level that seems necessary to somebody who has been in the building since morning is far higher than the level a visitor experiences walking in. That mismatch is how "strong" happens at all. Four, and this should settle it: a hospital's population is not a hotel's. It includes people who are nauseated, post-operative, pregnant, undergoing chemotherapy or simply very unwell, and for them a strong ambient fragrance in an unavoidable corridor is not neutral. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control, and SOSA makes no health, air-quality or infection-control claim for it. The correct next step for an odour is a facilities investigation. Once the building is genuinely clean, a low background in a qualifying non-clinical lobby is a reasonable finishing touch - a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: it hides a finding, it reads as two smells, the people setting it have adapted, and some of your visitors are already nauseated.
There is nothing to buy on this page. If your building has an odour, the next step is a facilities work order. When the building is genuinely clean and a lobby qualifies, the machine is a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 with fragrance from ₹299 - and only then.

Four reasons, and the fourth is the one that should settle it

Each of these is independently sufficient, which is unusual, and together they are the reason this is the one commercial question we answer with a flat no.

Why this works
What to do about a persistent odour
1 Check drainage and dry traps, especially in low-use areas 2 Review waste handling, routing and storage, and laundry paths 3 Check ventilation rate and balance, filter and drip-tray condition 4 Review housekeeping frequency - then reassess, with no fragrance involved
If, after the source is dealt with, one non-clinical public zone is still worth scenting, the machine for it is the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999. If the honest answer is that no zone qualifies, this guide has done its job and you should not buy anything.
01
Reason one
You are switching off an indicator
Odour in a building is diagnostic. A drain trap that has dried out in a low-use washroom, a waste store on the wrong side of a door, a laundry route through a warm corridor, a ventilation zone running unbalanced - each announces itself by smell, and that announcement is how somebody notices. Mask it and the fault continues, unobserved, until it presents in a more expensive way. A facilities team that has been handed a fragrance machine instead of a work order has been handed a delay.
Tip: A smell is the cheapest fault report your building will ever file.
02
Reasons two and three
Two smells, judged by adapted noses
Fragrance does not neutralise an odour; it accompanies it, and people perceive the pair and read it as concealment. Meanwhile the person choosing the intensity has been breathing that air since morning and adapted to both, so their sense of what is needed is systematically too high. That is the mechanism by which hospital fragrance becomes strong: not a decision to be strong, but a series of small increases made by people who could no longer smell it. A visitor arriving from outside gets the accumulated result.
03
Reason four
Some of your visitors are already nauseated
This is the one that should end the discussion. A hospital's population includes people post-operative, pregnant, undergoing treatment, in pain or simply very unwell, and for a meaningful number of them strong ambient fragrance is actively unpleasant rather than neutral. Unlike a hotel guest, they cannot choose a different building, and often cannot choose a different corridor. That asymmetry - a captive population, a proportion of whom are unwell - is why a hospital is the one commercial environment where we decline the brief rather than scale it down.
Tip: A hotel guest can leave. A patient cannot.
The SOSA principle
Fragrance does not cancel an odour. It stands next to it, and people notice both.
Which is why concealment reads worse than the original problem.

What to do instead

What to do instead is unglamorous and effective, and none of it involves a purchase from us.

The SOSA scent edit
Instead of fragrance, for a hospital odour
Scent Why it suits the mood
Drainage Dry traps in low-use areas are the most common single cause and cost nothing to rule out
Waste and laundry Storage location, routing and the temperature of the route all matter
Ventilation Rate, balance, filter condition and drip trays, checked before the summer
Housekeeping Frequency and method - then reassess the building with no fragrance in it

Not sure which size? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your lobby dimensions, ceiling height, HVAC type and what your infection-control policy already says - sizing is done remotely from your own measurements.

The prior question of whether a hospital should scent anything at all is answered in the hospital chapter, whether lobby-only is physically possible is in the lobby-zoning chapter, and the specific sanitiser and footfall fixes are in the hospital reception chapter.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

Honest notes for a healthcare facility: SOSA makes no health, air-quality, infection-control, therapeutic or clinical claim for fragrance, and ambient scenting is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A persistent odour in a healthcare building is a ventilation, drainage or housekeeping finding and should be investigated as one - fragrance placed over it conceals a signal the facility needs. Clinical, sterile, procedure, diagnostic and patient-care areas are governed by the facility's own infection-control policy, which decides whether any area is scented; in the specifications we write, those areas are not. Where scenting is considered at all it is limited to non-clinical public zones such as a main lobby, on their own air handling, with infection control's agreement, and with a fragrance-free waiting option available. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. SOSA's paid on-site walkthrough is ₹1,500 and is Pune only - everywhere else, including Vijayawada, Guntur and the Amaravati region, sizing is done remotely over WhatsApp from your own measurements. A note from Sonal

I will say something here that a fragrance company is not supposed to say: a hospital is the one environment where my honest answer is usually no. Not because scenting is unsafe, but because the places people most want to fix - wards, corridors, treatment areas, anywhere with a persistent odour - are exactly the places where a fragrance would be covering a finding that belongs to the ventilation, drainage or housekeeping team.

Where there is a real conversation to have, it is narrow: a main entrance lobby, sometimes a VIP lounge, sometimes a day-care reception - non-clinical zones, on their own air, with infection control's agreement. Narrow is not a consolation prize. A lobby is the first and last thing every visitor experiences, and getting one zone right is worth more than scenting a building badly.

SOSA makes no health, air-quality, therapeutic or clinical claim for fragrance, and your infection-control policy outranks every recommendation on this page. If your HVAC shares returns between clinical and non-clinical zones, my advice is to leave it alone until that zoning is separate. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 if you want that assessed honestly, including the answer that you should not buy anything. A part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Why is strong fragrance a bad solution for hospital odour?
It conceals a facilities finding, it sits alongside the odour rather than removing it so people perceive two smells, staff adapt while arriving visitors do not, and a hospital population includes people who are nauseated or unwell.
What should we do about a persistent odour instead?
Treat it as a facilities investigation: drainage and dry traps, waste handling and routing, laundry paths, ventilation rate and balance, filter and drip-tray condition, and housekeeping frequency.
Why does hospital fragrance end up too strong?
Because the people setting it have adapted to it. A series of small increases by staff who can no longer smell it accumulates into a level that visitors arriving from outside find heavy.
Does this mean a hospital can never use fragrance?
No. Once there is no odour to conceal, a non-clinical lobby on genuinely separate air, with infection control's written agreement and a fragrance-free option, can carry a low background.
Can fragrance neutralise or eliminate odours?
SOSA makes no such claim. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control, and it does not clean, filter or disinfect air. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
