This is one of the most useful observations anybody makes about their own home, and almost nobody realises what they have noticed. A fan does not change the air in your room at all. It moves it. An air conditioner changes the air considerably — it takes several degrees and a good deal of water out of it — and brings in no new air whatsoever. So you have been comparing two different things that both got called fresh, and the fan has been winning on a technicality: moving air over skin evaporates sweat, and the body reports that as freshness whether or not the air itself has been anywhere. The good news is that the air conditioner is not the problem here. The sealing is, and ten minutes fixes it.

1. Because a fan does not change your air, it changes your skin. Moving air lifts the layer of humid warmth sitting against you and evaporates sweat, and evaporation takes heat with it. Air at even half a metre a second feels two to three degrees cooler than still air of the same temperature. Your body reports cool, and the mind translates cool into fresh.

2. An air conditioner does change your air, and one of the changes is that there is no new air. 4. The dryness is the third piece, and it is the one people never suspect. An AC removes water — several litres over a night in an Indian summer, into the pipe dripping outside your wall. Very dry air dries the throat and the front of the nose, and a dry nose is a slightly duller nose. Air that reads as flat is a short step from air that reads as stale.

Why moving air feels like new air

Start with the fan, because it is the machine people are most confident they understand and the one they are most wrong about. A ceiling fan has no filter, no coil, no duct to the outside and no effect whatsoever on the temperature, humidity or composition of the air in the room. Every molecule that was in your bedroom before you switched it on is still there afterwards, in the same proportions. What it does is stir. And stirring, it turns out, produces one of the strongest sensations of freshness available indoors, for reasons that have nothing to do with the air being any better than it was.

THE SKIN
A fan is a machine for making you colder, not for making the air better
Here is the mechanism, and it is worth having properly. Your body is continuously losing heat by evaporating water from the skin, and it does that far more efficiently when the humid layer sitting against you is being carried away and replaced. Still air lets that layer build up until it is nearly saturated, at which point evaporation slows and you feel warm and heavy. Move the air across it at even half a metre a second and the evaporation resumes at full rate, taking heat out of you as it goes. The measured effect is worth two to three degrees of apparent temperature, and in a humid Indian evening it can feel like more. That is the entire fan effect, and notice what it is not. It is not fresher air. It is the same air, working harder on your skin. The mind does not receive these as two separate reports. It receives one impression, and because cool and fresh have been welded together since childhood — a breeze, a hill station, a window on a train — the impression that arrives is freshness. This is not a failure of perception on your part. It is how the sense is built. But it means the fan can produce a very convincing feeling of fresh air in a room that has not had any new air in it since Tuesday, and if you are trying to diagnose a smell, that is a genuinely misleading instrument.

THE WINDOW
You have been comparing a ventilated room with a sealed one
Now the part that is hiding in plain sight, and in most flats it is the larger half of the answer. Think about how each machine is actually used rather than what each machine does. A fan runs with the balcony door open, or the window on the latch, or at the very least the bedroom door ajar, because there is no reason not to and the room is more comfortable that way. An air conditioner runs with everything shut, because an open window is cooling being thrown into the street. So the comparison you have run in your own home, over many evenings, is not fan against AC at all. It is open room against closed room, with a machine noise attached to each. The fan has spent years quietly taking the credit for ventilation it does not supply and cannot supply. You can test this in one evening and I would encourage it, because a test you have run yourself is worth more than a paragraph you have read. Shut the room completely, run only the fan for three hours, and then walk out for ten minutes and come back in. If it smells closed, the fan was never the fresh one. Then do the reverse: run the AC for three hours with ten minutes of two-sided exchange at the start, and see how different the room is at the end. Almost everybody who does this is surprised, and almost everybody stops blaming the air conditioner afterwards.

THE DRYNESS
An air conditioner takes water out of the room, and a dry nose is a duller nose
Then the third piece, which is smaller than the other two but explains the specific quality of the complaint. A split unit cools by passing room air over a coil that is well below the dew point, so water condenses out of the air onto the fins and runs away down the drain line — several litres over a hot night, which is what the pipe dripping outside your wall has been doing all summer. That is real dehumidification, and in the monsoon it is one of the most useful things the machine does for you. But carried on for eight hours in a sealed room it can take the humidity down to a level where the mucous membranes at the front of your nose and the back of your throat begin to dry out, and those membranes are not incidental to smelling. Odour molecules have to dissolve into a thin layer of moisture before the receptors can meet them. A dry nose is a slightly duller nose, and the impression it produces is of air that has gone flat — which is one syllable away from air that has gone stale, and people reach for the nearer word. Add the sensation of a dry throat on waking, which most people file under the same heading, and you have an air-conditioned room that is objectively cleaner and drier than the fan room and subjectively worse. None of this is an argument against air conditioning. It is an argument for putting ten minutes of real air back into the day, and for not letting the room run bone dry for eight hours at a stretch.
The sentence I would keep from this page: the fan wins on feel and loses on fact. Cool skin is not clean air, and a room can be perfectly still, perfectly cold and perfectly unaired all at the same time.

If your remote has a dry or dehumidify mode, know what it is doing before you use it overnight — it is a setting for a wet day rather than a default, and in a room that is already dry it will make the flatness worse rather than better.

Then placement, which on this particular page is where most of the practical damage gets done. Never stand a diffuser in the arc of a ceiling fan and never under an air-conditioning vent, and if you take one instruction away from this section, take that one. I like this question more than almost any other in this group, because the person asking it has made a real observation and simply has not been given the vocabulary for it. They have noticed that two rooms which ought to be the same are not, and they have described it accurately. The only thing they have got wrong is which of the two is actually fresher, and that is not their fault, because the body genuinely does report moving air as freshness and there is no way to argue with your own skin. I have stood in a great many bedrooms in June with the fan going and thought, this feels lovely, and then opened the door and understood that it had not been lovely at all.

So the correction I would make is small and it changes everything. Stop treating the fan as the fresh option and the air conditioner as the stale one, and start treating both of them as machines that do nothing about air exchange, because that is what they are. Then put twenty minutes of genuine exchange into the day — ten before, ten after — and run them together with the thermostat a degree higher. The room will be cool, it will be comfortable, it will not be bone dry and it will actually have been aired, which is the thing you were looking for all along. Only after that is a fragrance worth buying, and in a cool dry room it is worth less money than you think: three drops, on a timer, of something dry.
