Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. A machine cannot push scent through a closed bedroom door, and it never will - so a partitioned villa is not one scenting problem but several, and honest sizing means saying so out loud rather than selling you one machine and hoping. Scent the volume that is genuinely open to itself, then give the closed rooms their own quiet answer, usually a reed diffuser. Fragrance never substitutes for ventilation or cleaning. If a room smells damp, stale or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it first; scent added on top of that only makes a more complicated bad smell. A home is not a lobby you pass through. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. If I can only pick one register for card night, which is it?
The Westin-inspired blend of white tea, aloe and cedar. It is the serene, spa-like signature in the range, the quietest of the seven, and the easiest thing to sit inside for six hours without tiring of it, which is the whole specification for a room nobody can leave. It is also the hardest register for anybody in a large mixed family gathering to object to, and on a night that includes elderly relatives, someone pregnant and at least one person with a migraine history, that matters more than character does. If your house tends formal and you want a little more lift beside the food that keeps arriving, take the Ritz-Carlton-inspired blend of white tea, bergamot and cedar instead - the bergamot reads bright against rich snacks rather than merging into them. If your home is wood, stone and plants rather than polished, take the 1 Hotels-inspired cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, which is the driest and greenest of the seven. Which register lasts longest through a long evening?
We do not publish comparative longevity or throw data for these registers, and we are not going to invent it, because the honest answer is that longevity in a room is not a property of the blend on its own. What decides how present a fragrance is at eleven o'clock is the machine you are running, the intensity you set it to, the volume of air in the room and how often the door is opening - the same blend in a 170 cubic metre sitting room at a low setting and in a 566 cubic metre connected floor at a higher one behaves completely differently. There is also a trap inside the question. The reason a fragrance seems to have faded by hour three is usually not the fragrance at all, it is your nose adapting, which happens to everybody in the room within about half an hour and is not reversed by anything except leaving and coming back. That is why the useful answer is a steady gentle schedule rather than a longer-lasting blend, and why the person best placed to tell you the truth is whoever walks in late with a fresh nose.
Should the card night register be different from what I run the rest of the year?
Ideally not, and there is a real gain in keeping it the same. A house that smells consistent is what people register as having a character, in the way a hotel does; a house that smells different each visit reads as a house that keeps buying things. Your relatives and neighbours will be in and out repeatedly across the festival week, so consistency is doing visible work. There is also a nose problem behind the urge to switch: yours adapts within minutes, so the feeling that your usual register has stopped working is almost always adaptation rather than a real judgement about the blend. The house will have marigold and tuberose garlands. Does that rule out any register?
It makes one worth thinking twice about rather than ruling anything out. Marigold is green and slightly bitter, tuberose is heavy and floral, and both are unmistakably the smell of the occasion, which means the job is to coexist rather than to compete. The register to think twice about is the Shangri-La-inspired jasmine, green tea and white tea, simply because it puts a large floral into a room that already has a large floral in it - some people love the coherence and others find it is one flower too many, and in a room people sit in all evening, one too many is the likelier outcome. The registers that coexist most gracefully are the dry and clean ones: the 1 Hotels-inspired cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves is close enough to marigold's green character to feel related, and the two white teas sit underneath flowers without arguing with them. Keep every fragrance product well away from the diyas that usually sit alongside the garlands, and leave the puja space entirely alone.

No, and it is worth being precise about why.
