There is one placement rule specific to a two-storey house, and it is the opposite of what the layout suggests.
Quick answers — read this first
Where should a scent machine go in a two-storey house? In the living area, away from the stair opening, at console or table height and out of the direct throw of an air conditioner.

Why not at the foot of the stairs? Because a stairwell continuously removes air from the room it opens off, so a source placed beside it feeds the stairwell rather than the room you are sitting in.

Does the stairwell placement help the upper floor? No. The quantity carried upward is small relative to what upper rooms need, so you lose the ground floor level without meaningfully gaining anything above.
The short answer
Short answer: Not at the foot of the stairs. A stairwell drains the room it opens off, so place the source away from the opening.
The pick: the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) as the flagship delivery gift; volume gifts from ₹299; reed diffusers from ₹749; the Vaayu (₹11,999) for your own premises.
Planning volumes? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 - tell us the customer moment, per-unit band and quantity and we will quote and build the programme.
Customer gifting that compounds - the SOSA method at a glanceStep 1 - gift the moment: delivery day, possession, checkout, milestone purchaseStep 2 - set the per-unit band: ₹299 to ₹3,999 by customer valueStep 3 - brand the gesture: your card, your story, our fragranceStep 4 - pilot small, then scale to 50, 100, 500 unitsWhatsApp the bulk desk for volume pricing
A customer gift works when it survives the drive home - sweets vanish in a day and keychains join a drawer, but a fragrance is used daily in the customer's own car or living room, replaying your brand at every use. The method: gift the milestone moment, set the per-unit band by customer value, brand the gesture with your card, pilot and scale. This guide walks the exact play, with real SOSA options at every band.
Straight answer
Where should you put a scent machine in a two-storey house?
In the living area, away from the stair opening. That is the one placement rule specific to a two-storey house, and it runs against what the layout suggests. The instinct is to put the machine near the foot of the stairs - it feels central, and it seems like the position from which both floors can be reached. It is the worst spot in the room. A stairwell is not a neutral opening; it is a continuous outflow. Air moves through it more or less constantly in response to temperature difference, which means a source placed beside it is feeding the stairwell rather than the room you are sitting in. You lose the ground floor level you paid for. And you do not meaningfully gain upstairs either, because the quantity carried up is small relative to what those rooms need - so it is a loss on both sides. Put it in the body of the living area, in the part people walk into, several metres from the stair opening. Then the usual rules apply: console or table height, never the floor, where still air makes a pool rather than distributing; out of the direct throw of an air conditioner, which produces a gradient; and never aimed at the dining table or anywhere near the kitchen. Vaayu ₹11,999 or Megh ₹3,499 there; the upper floor takes reeds from ₹749. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Not at the foot of the stairs

There is one placement rule that belongs specifically to two-storey homes, and it is worth leading with because it is the opposite of what the layout suggests to almost everybody. Do not put the machine at the foot of the stairs. Here is the instinct and here is why it fails. In a house with an open stairwell off the living area, the base of the stairs feels like the centre of the home. It is where the two floors meet, it is usually on the route from the entrance, and it looks like the one position from which fragrance could reach both levels. So that is where a great many machines end up, on a console table beside the newel post. The problem is that a stairwell is not a neutral opening in the room. It is a continuous outflow. Air moves through it in response to the temperature difference between the floors, and in most conditions that means air is being drawn out of the room and up through the opening more or less constantly. A source placed right beside it is therefore feeding the stairwell rather than the room. The material you are paying for is being removed from the living area before it has distributed through it. That is the first half of the loss. The second half is that you do not gain much upstairs in exchange. The quantity a stairwell transports is small relative to what upper rooms would need - and in any case those rooms are behind closed doors that nothing crosses - so the upward gain is a faint trace on a landing rather than a served floor. So the placement loses ground floor level and buys almost nothing above it. Move it. The right position is in the body of the living area, in the part of the room people walk into, several metres away from the stair opening. That gives the fragrance the volume of the room to distribute through before the stairwell starts removing it, and it puts the level where the value actually is - at arrival, because everybody who lives in a house has adapted to its background within about an hour and perceives very little of it, which makes walking in from outside the only moment anybody experiences the home properly. Then the standard placement rules apply, and they matter as much here as anywhere. Height first: console or table level rather than the floor. Air circulates through the upper part of a room, so a low source in a still corner produces a pool of fragrance around itself rather than distributing, and that symptom is very commonly misdiagnosed as the machine being too weak and treated by buying something larger. Airflow second: keep it out of the direct throw of an air conditioner, which carries everything in one direction at speed and produces a pronounced gradient with material depositing on whatever soft surfaces sit downstream. A metre or two to the side, or on the opposite side of the seating, is usually enough. Then two refusals. Never aim a unit at the dining table, because taste is very largely smell and an ambient register at the table competes directly with the food - and where the dining area shares the living volume, run the cycle so it finishes before food is served. And never place anything in the kitchen at any time: cooking smell is aerosolised oil that travels through the house and settles into soft furnishings in other rooms, and the answer is extraction used every single time with the door shut. Finally, the upper floor is not a placement problem at all - it is a product question. No position on the ground floor reaches a bedroom behind a closed door, so each of those rooms takes its own reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849, at the lightest level in the home and from a source the occupant can move, cap or take out of the room without asking anybody. A landing takes one reed. And the entrance takes a permanent passive source, because it should work whether or not a cycle ran and whether or not the power is on.

Why this works
The rule, and why
1 A stairwell is an opening that continuously removes air 2 A source next to it feeds the stairwell, not the room 3 So place it away from the stair opening, in the living area 4 Then the usual rules: console height, out of the AC throw
The flagship delivery gift: the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 - a rechargeable waterless car diffuser with three hotel-inspired scents in the box. Per-unit gifts from ₹299; volume pricing on WhatsApp.
01
A stairwell is an outflow
Not a neutral opening in the room
Air moves through it more or less constantly in response to temperature difference, so a source beside it is feeding the opening rather than the room you are sitting in.
Tip: You lose the level you paid for.
02
And you gain almost nothing above
A faint trace on a landing, not a served floor
The quantity a stairwell transports is small relative to what upper rooms need, and those rooms are behind closed doors anyway. So the placement is a loss on both sides.
03
Then the usual rules
Console height, out of the airstream, away from food
Floor level in still air makes a pool, which is misread as weakness. An air conditioner's throw makes a gradient. And the dining table and kitchen get nothing at any time.
Tip: Upstairs is a product question, not a placement one.
The SOSA principle
The foot of the stairs feels like the centre of the house. It is the one place the room is being emptied.
Several metres into the living area, at console height.

The stairwell drains the room it opens off

The stairwell drains the room it opens off. Right position: in the body of the living area, in the part people walk into, several metres from the stair opening, at console or table height rather than the floor, and out of the direct throw of an air conditioner - the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 if the closed-door walk shows the ground plane genuinely open, waterless with no tank and with Bluetooth app and timer control; the SOSA Megh at Rs 3,499 with a 6L tank for a partly open plan; or the SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,799 for a compact living area. Run one or two longer cycles anchored to arrivals, at a level set on a day you had just come in from outside. Wrong positions: beside the foot of the stairs, where the stairwell removes what you release before it distributes; on the floor or in a still corner, where it makes a pool rather than a room; in an air conditioner's airstream, which makes a gradient; and aimed at the dining table or anywhere in the kitchen, which gets nothing at any time. The upper floor, which is a product question rather than a placement one, since no ground-floor position reaches a bedroom behind a closed door: a reed diffuser per bedroom at the lightest level in the home from a source the occupant can move, cap or take out without asking anybody, one per bathroom, and one on the landing - Morning Freshness at Rs 749, Garden Bloom at Rs 799, Evening Calm at Rs 799, Fresh Brew at Rs 849, Mountain Breeze at Rs 849, three to four months per bottle, refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml. The entrance, permanent rather than scheduled: a reed or the SOSA Boond at Rs 799. Fragrance for machines: Hotel Collection at Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, at three to six drops per tank, rinsing between scents; it is not reed diffuser oil. Never scented: children's rooms, the kitchen at any time, the dining area during a meal, and covered terraces and balconies. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards.

Honest notes for business gifters: customer taste varies, so volume programmes should run gentle, crowd-tested registers - fresh, clean and lightly floral scents are received well across every profile, and space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) avoid the personal-taste risk of skin perfume entirely. Listed prices are per-unit store prices; volume pricing, pilot batches, branded cards and custom hamper builds are quoted on WhatsApp - and signature-scent development for your brand is a consultation with our perfumer, not an off-the-shelf item, so timelines are discussed case by case. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with any hotel brand. Ultrasonic diffusers use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil - the two are not interchangeable. All personal fragrances are alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant. WhatsApp bulk desk: +91 96192 18531. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.

And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Where should the machine go in a two-storey house?
In the living area, away from the stair opening, at console or table height and out of the direct throw of an air conditioner.
Why not at the foot of the stairs?
Because a stairwell is a continuous outflow, so a source beside it feeds the opening rather than the room, and you lose the ground floor level you paid for.
Does it at least help upstairs?
Barely. The quantity carried up is small relative to what upper rooms need, and those rooms are behind closed doors anyway, so it is a loss on both sides.
Why does height matter?
Because air circulates through the upper part of a room, so a floor-level source in a still corner makes a pool, which is commonly misread as the machine being too weak.
How do I reach the bedrooms upstairs?
You do not, with a machine. Each takes its own reed at the lightest level, from a source the occupant can move or cap. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the customer-gifting advice applies whatever your business finally buys.

Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer).
