Why might a machine be wrong for an older house? Because it standardises the whole building to one register, and older houses often have no HVAC return to work with and are ventilated through open windows and ventilators.
When is a machine still right? When the older house is genuinely large and has been renovated into connected open spaces with air conditioning.
An older house already has a smell
Almost every page on this site is written for a new or newly built home, where the starting condition is a blank one - fresh paint, no history, nothing in the air but solvent that needs to leave. An older independent house is a different starting point and it deserves different advice. Those houses have a smell, and it is not a fault. Old teak and rosewood in doors, window frames and cupboards gives off something warm and dry for decades. Lime plaster and stone or mosaic flooring behave differently from cement and vitrified tile, holding cool and reading slightly mineral. There are usually books, sometimes a great many. There is often a small garden or a row of pots at the entrance, so the doorway smells of wet earth after watering. And in the monsoon there will be a wall or a corner that goes slightly damp and dries again. Anybody who has chosen to live in that kind of house rather than a new apartment two kilometres away has usually chosen it partly for exactly this quality, and that is the single most important thing to know before buying them a fragrance gift. The instinct in this category is to install a system that makes a whole building smell consistently of one thing. That is the right ambition in a new villa and it is close to vandalism in an old house, because consistency is achieved by overwriting. The better ambition here is addition: one register, in one or two rooms, chosen to sit alongside what is already there rather than to cover it. A reed diffuser is the correct instrument for that, because it is bounded - it works on the room it stands in and makes no claim on the house. And the register choice matters more than usual, because it is going into a room with an existing character rather than a neutral one. Mountain Breeze at eight hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty is Himalayan pine, sage and cedar, which sits naturally with old wood because it is dry and resinous rather than sweet. Fresh Brew at the same prices is Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla, which suits a study or a dining room with books in it. Evening Calm at seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine is lavender and chamomile, which is the usual bedroom choice anywhere. Garden Bloom at the same is British rose with night-blooming jasmine, which belongs in a house with plants at the door because it continues the idea rather than contradicting it. Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine is Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus, which reads clean and is the right choice near a kitchen. A duo set at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees is the version to give as a new-home present, because two rooms with two registers is precisely the non-standardising approach this house wants. There is also a practical argument, quite separate from the aesthetic one, and it is the one that usually settles it. A waterless nebuliser works by putting a dry mist into air that the building is already moving, and it is designed to be freestanding, wall mounted or mounted on an HVAC return so that a home's own circulation carries the fragrance. Older independent houses frequently have none of that. Many are not centrally air conditioned; they are ventilated the way they were designed to be, through windows on two sides, ventilators or jaali above the doors, a stairwell that pulls air up, and in Bengaluru's climate they are often lived in with the windows open all day. There is no return to mount on and no continuous internal airflow to ride. Add the layout - rooms connected by doorways rather than running together as one volume - and the machine's central advantage, one even field across a connected space, largely disappears. A house of separate rooms is a house where each room can have its own correctly sized source, which is the bottle. None of that is an absolute. Some older houses have been renovated substantially - walls opened up, a connected living and dining running the length of the plot, air conditioning fitted, a double-height addition - and a renovated large old house of roughly two thousand square feet or more with connected volumes and air conditioning is a genuine case for the SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees. If that is the situation, the facts are the usual ones: coverage up to a thousand cubic metres or about two thousand to three thousand square feet, waterless with no tank and no humidity added, four hundred millilitre tank lasting up to around seventy-five days a fill, Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons with one, four, eight and twenty-four hour windows, day selection and adjustable intensity, under thirty-eight decibels, five watts, nine hundred grams, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, auto-stop and key lock, and four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils included. Refills are the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred, never the water-based Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees, which is for ultrasonic machines. Two honest notes to finish. An old house's damp is a cause, not a smell to be covered: a wall that darkens in the monsoon, a bathroom that never dries, a cupboard against an external wall, a floor drain whose trap has dried out and is letting sewer air in. Deal with those and then scent the room, because fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix. And if the house has just been renovated rather than just been bought, it is temporarily a new building - fresh paint, varnish and polish need a few weeks of open windows before any fragrance goes in, and in a wet spell that takes longer than people expect.
And it is often part of why they chose it - so the job is addition, not replacement
A register for a room, not a system for a building.

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
