The complaint has a very consistent shape. The sofa end is lovely, the dining end smells of nothing, and somewhere between the two there is a stretch where it comes and goes. The instinct is to buy a machine for the dining end, and it makes the problem stranger rather than better. Diffusers do not add up; each one draws a gradient, and what you notice in a big room is not the shortage but the seam where two gradients meet.

How do you scent a large open-plan villa evenly?
1. Use one generation point, not several. A single machine placed in the room's existing air circulation produces one smooth gradient. Two machines produce two, and the faint edges meet in a seam that reads as a dead patch. Removing a machine has fixed more uneven rooms for me than adding one ever has.

2. Put it where the air already moves. Beside the return side of the split AC, in the path of the draught from the entrance, or near the doorway the house naturally breathes through. The room's own circulation is far stronger than anything a diffuser generates, so use it rather than competing with it.

3. Adjust the room before you buy anything. Ceiling fan on its lowest setting helps distribution; on high it destroys it. Ten minutes of fan-only air conditioning before a session gets the loop moving. Closing one door — to the passage, to the stairwell — shortens the circuit and concentrates what you have.

4. If it is a double-height room, the problem is vertical. Warm air rises through the void continuously, so everything released above roughly 1.5 metres leaves the layer people occupy. No number of floor-level machines fixes a vertical gradient. Go lower, not wider.

Why two machines in one room do not add up

A diffuser does not fill a room to a level, the way water fills a tank. It creates a concentration gradient: high at the machine, falling away with distance as the scented air mixes into the rest and as the heavier droplets settle out. That gradient is the whole behaviour, and it is why a single machine in a room of the right size feels even — you are standing inside a gentle slope and your nose reads it as uniform. Put a second machine forty feet away and you now have two slopes running towards each other. Where they meet, both are at their weakest, and the sum of two weak ends is still a weak end. What people describe as a patchy room is almost always that seam, and its position moves whenever you move a machine, which is why the problem feels so slippery.

Underneath the geometry there is a material limit that no arrangement solves. An ultrasonic diffuser makes scented water droplets — cold, wet and comparatively heavy. They fall out of the air within a few metres and leave the fragrance behind at low level rather than carrying it across a room. That is a property of the mist itself, not of the Sukoon producing it, so buying three more of them multiplies the seams without extending the reach. If the connected floor area is above roughly 800 to 1,000 sq ft and the free fixes have been done properly, you have reached the material limit rather than a placement problem. At that point the answer is a machine that makes a different kind of particle. The Vaayu at ₹11,999 is rated to 1000 m³ — around 2,900 sq ft of floor at a twelve-foot ceiling, or about 1,750 sq ft of true double height — and produces a dry, fine output that rides the room's circulation instead of dropping out of it. Sessions, fans and the vertical problem

Run in defined sessions rather than continuously, because continuous running in a large room does not produce evenness — it produces adaptation. Your nose stops registering a constant, unchanging smell within about twenty minutes, so a room you have been sitting in all afternoon will read as empty to you and as strong to somebody walking in. The failure mode is predictable: you raise the dose, the visitor finds it heavy, and the room is now both over-scented and still apparently patchy. An hour before people arrive, an hour in the evening, four to five drops of the Hotel Collection — and judge the result by stepping outside for five minutes and coming back in.

Use the room's machinery deliberately. Ten minutes of fan-only air conditioning before a session establishes the circulation loop so the fragrance is picked up and carried rather than sitting where it was made. A ceiling fan on its lowest setting distributes; the same fan on high strips mist out of the air and pins it against one wall, which is a very common cause of a strong corner and a dead middle. Close the garden doors while a session runs — an opening to outside is an unlimited sink, and you cannot out-supply it — and open them again afterwards, when the fragrance has already mixed through.

The vertical problem needs saying separately because it is invisible on a floor plan. In a double-height space the warm air rises through the void continuously, so the room is stratified: fragrance released above roughly 1.5 metres joins that column and leaves the layer where people actually are. Nothing horizontal fixes this. Drop the machine to side-table height beside the seating, and never place it on a mezzanine, a high ledge or the gallery rail, however well it looks there. Ordinary housekeeping still applies to any ultrasonic in the room: filtered water in hard-water cities, a rinse between scents, no raw essential or carrier oils in the tank, and bottles kept away from children and pets.

The first thing I ask somebody with a patchy open-plan room is how many machines are running in it, and the answer is almost always more than one. Then I ask them to turn all but one off for a week. It is a strange instruction to give a customer and it works often enough that I keep giving it. Fragrance in one room is a slope, not a level, and two slopes make a valley.

The second thing, which people find harder to accept, is that the room is often fine and the nose is the variable. You cannot smell a constant scent after twenty minutes in it. Everybody knows this in the abstract and nobody applies it to their own living room, so the dose creeps up week by week until a visitor says something polite. Judge a room on the first breath after five minutes outside, always.

And when a room has genuinely outgrown ultrasonic diffusion — a proper double-height villa hall, a thousand square feet of connected floor — I will say so rather than sell a fourth Sukoon into it.
