It is timed wrong, because it is at its loudest at exactly the moment the first person walks in with a completely fresh nose, so the house smells like it is being prepared rather than like it has a character. And it is usually a second register on top of whatever is already running, which turns one voice into two and reads as busy rather than composed. If a room genuinely smells wrong ten minutes before people arrive, the honest fix is the free one: open a window, run the extractor, take the bin out, and let it go. Should I open the windows during the party as well, or does that waste the fragrance?
Open them when the room needs it and stop thinking of it as waste, because comfort beats consistency every time.
