Evaporation. That is the honest answer and it is mildly deflating, so let me give it to you straight rather than dressed up. Extra reeds put more oil into the air per hour. They do not put it anywhere new. Evaporation is a rate — millilitres leaving the bottle in a week. Projection is a distance — how far what has left actually gets. The first is a property of the reeds and the oil; the second is a property of the room’s moving air, which a reed diffuser does not have and cannot supply. Adding reeds moves the first number and cannot touch the second, and the receipt arrives as a bottle that finishes early.
Quick answers — read this first
Which one do reeds increase? Evaporation. More wetted fibre means more surface for oil to leave from, so the rate goes up. The vapour then meets the same still room and travels exactly as far as it did before.

The receipt: a SOSA 50ml at six reeds runs 6–8 weeks; at three it is a soft bedside level and lasts roughly twice as long. Two or three reeds in a 50 sq ft bathroom can stretch a 50ml to nearly three months. Reed count is a spending dial as much as a strength dial.

What actually increases projection, free: a ceiling fan on low. It is the one household item that supplies the transport a reed structurally lacks. It will shorten the bottle, and that is worth knowing before you switch it on rather than after.

The honest gap: nothing you can put in a reed diffuser converts evaporation into projection. If projection is the requirement, it is a different mechanism — and the cheapest honest one is Sukoon ₹1,899, not something dearer.
The short answer
Short answer: more reeds increases evaporation, not projection. The two words describe different quantities. Evaporation is the rate at which oil leaves the bottle, measured in millilitres per week, and it is set by wetted reed surface, temperature, humidity and the composition. Projection is how far the resulting vapour travels, and it is set almost entirely by whatever air the room is already moving. A reed adds surface. It adds no air. So the rate rises and the distance does not.
Where the extra millilitres go: into the air within a metre or so of the bottle, where they raise the local concentration and are then diluted into the room at the same rate as before. Nothing is wasted in the sense of being lost — every millilitre in the glass leaves through the reeds either way. What changes is how quickly you spend it, and at about ₹13–₹15 a day for a 50ml, running at six reeds instead of three roughly halves how far that money stretches.
Shop: SOSA reeds are 50ml (₹749–₹849, up to ~150 sq ft, 6–8 weeks) and 130ml (₹1,249–₹1,349, above 150 sq ft, 14–18 weeks), six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle. 300ml refills at ₹2,399 are roughly six 50ml fills, for someone tired of repurchasing — oil only, never a first purchase. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
Do extra reeds give me projection, or am I just burning through the bottle faster?
1. You are increasing evaporation, and mostly buying a shorter bottle. A reed is a wick. Its exposed surface is where liquid becomes vapour. Double the number of wetted reeds and you roughly double that surface, so roughly twice as much oil leaves per hour. All of that additional vapour appears at the same place — immediately above the bottle — and from there its fate is decided by the room, not by the reeds.

2. Projection is not something a reed produces at all. Once a molecule is airborne it moves by molecular diffusion, which is far too slow to cross metres of a room usefully, or by riding air that is already moving. A reed diffuser has no fan, no pump, no heat and no power, so it contributes nothing to the second. That is why the honest word for what it makes is a fragrant zone rather than a fragranced room.

3. The gain you do get is vertical, and it is real but small. A higher concentration at the source means the curve crosses your detection threshold a little further out, so the edge of the zone shifts by a step. It does not change category. Nobody has ever gone from a fragrant corner to a fragrant room by adding sticks.

4. The free change that buys projection is a ceiling fan on low. A fan is transport in a way no reed count will ever be, and in most Indian bedrooms it is already installed. Run it low, close the door, keep the bottle out of the direct downdraught. It will shorten the bottle’s life because moving air evaporates the reeds faster — the same trade you are already making with extra reeds, except that this one actually delivers distance in return.

5. Then decide what you are buying with the reed count. Six reeds is full projection and 6–8 weeks on a 50ml in a room up to about 150 sq ft. Three is a soft bedside level and roughly doubles that. Two or three in a 50 sq ft bathroom can stretch the same bottle to nearly three months. Flip every three to five days, not daily: a flip restores output for a few hours and adds no range.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, six fibre reeds, refillable glass bottle, composed in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: evaporation, and the bill arrives in weeks. Extra reeds raise millilitres-per-hour and leave metres-from-the-bottle exactly where they were. Projection comes from moving air, and the free version of moving air is a fan on low.
SOSA Morning Freshness Malabar lemon and mint reed diffuser
Evaporation, engineered rather than accidental
Morning Freshness · Malabar lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus ₹749 / 50ml
Since this page is about evaporation rate, here is a composition built around controlling it. Citrus tops are the lightest molecules in perfumery, which is why an ordinary lemon reed is thrilling for ten to fourteen days and then quiet. The eucalyptus globulus base under this one slows the lemon’s evaporation by roughly three to four times, which is the whole reason the bottle runs 6–8 weeks instead of a fortnight. That is what it looks like to change an evaporation rate deliberately — and note that it changed the calendar, not the range.

Two words that get used as synonyms and are not

Most of the confusion in home fragrance lives in this one substitution, so it is worth being pedantic for a paragraph. Evaporation is a rate. Projection is a distance. They have different units, different causes and different cures. You can raise a rate to its ceiling and leave a distance untouched, which is exactly the experience that brought you here.

Evaporation happens at the boundary between liquid and air, and everything that governs it lives at that boundary: how much wetted surface is exposed, how warm the surface is, how dry the surrounding air is, and how heavy the molecules leaving are. Reed count is simply the surface term. Add reeds and you add surface; add surface and the rate rises. This is also why heat empties a bottle faster in a warm room than in a cool one, and why saturated humid air slows things down and makes the scent hang closer to the glass. None of those levers has a distance in it anywhere.

Projection begins after the molecule is already airborne, and by then the bottle has no further influence. What decides where it goes is the room: convection off a sunlit wall, the current from a fan, a running AC recirculating in a closed bedroom, a draught under a door, a person walking past. Almost all real distribution in a home is somebody else’s air doing the work. A reed diffuser is a point source with no transport, so it hands its output to that system and has no say in the outcome. When you increase reeds, you increase what you hand over — and the system carries it exactly as far as it carried the last lot.

1
WHAT YOU BOUGHT
Millilitres per week, and a shorter calendar
Fresh Brew reed diffuserFresh Brew₹849The honest accounting is straightforward. A SOSA 50ml runs 6–8 weeks with all six reeds in a room up to about 150 sq ft, which works out at roughly ₹13 to ₹15 a day depending on the scent. Halve the reed count and the same bottle lasts roughly twice as long, which by the same arithmetic roughly halves the daily cost. Nothing is lost either way — every millilitre in that glass leaves through the reeds and reaches a room. The only genuine waste in a reed diffuser is oil evaporating into a room nobody is sitting in, which is a placement and occupancy question rather than a product one. If you leave a bedroom at eight and come back at eight, three reeds is not a downgrade; it is a sensible match between output and use.
Practical version: if six reeds did not buy you reach, six reeds is buying you a calendar you did not want.
2
WHAT YOU DID NOT BUY
A single metre of distance
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic diffuserSukoon₹1,899Compare that with what an air-moving mechanism does, because the contrast is the clearest way to see what a reed is missing. An ultrasonic diffuser vibrates a water-and-oil mixture into a mist and pushes it out under pressure; a waterless cold-air nebuliser shatters undiluted oil into a dry micro-mist that travels with the room’s airflow. Both of those devices are doing something to the air as well as to the oil, and that something is the whole difference. Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft and runs 16–18 hours on low, with the honest costs attached: the oil is diluted in water, the output adds humidity, and in a hard-water city it can leave a fine white mineral dust.
Note before switching: reed oil cannot go into an ultrasonic machine, and the water-based Hotel Collection cannot go into reeds. A machine is an addition to the shelf, not a swap.

THE TRAP AT THE TOP OF THE DIAL
Over-dosing does not read as strong, it reads as cheap
Evening Calm reed diffuserEvening Calm₹799There is a reason I do not simply supply more sticks. Almost any composition at too high a concentration flattens into one sweet or sharp impression, and that flattening is precisely what people are describing when they say a room smells like an air freshener. The same fragrance can read as expensive in one house and cheap in another purely on dose. This is also why our strength scale runs from 8.9 to 9.5 rather than to eleven: it measures perceived intensity in a room, not quality, and it exists so that someone furnishing a small sealed bedroom can deliberately choose downwards. Evening Calm at 8.9 is the softest thing we compose, and at three reeds in a small room it is exactly right.
Restraint costs nothing and is the difference between a room that smells composed and one that smells dosed.

Follow the millilitres, and the answer stops being a matter of opinion

Here is the exercise I would run in my head before adding a reed. Take a millilitre of oil and ask where it physically goes. It climbs the fibre by capillary action. It reaches exposed surface. It becomes vapour at that surface and enters the layer of air immediately around the reeds. From there it is diluted into the room at whatever rate the room mixes. There is no stage in that journey where the number of reeds influences the last step — the reeds have finished their work by the time the molecule is airborne. Adding reeds shortens the queue at the surface. It does not extend the road afterwards.

Which is why the same argument disposes of the other three purchases people make at this point, and it is worth naming them together because they cost real money. A bigger bottle holds more millilitres and delivers them at the same rate for longer — volume is a duration specification, not a coverage specification. A stronger composition puts more odorous material into each millilitre, which raises the concentration at the source and does nothing to the road. A second diffuser adds a second source, which produces a second peak with a valley between them rather than a plateau, because neither source moves air. Four different receipts, one axis.

The exception, and I want to be fair about it, is that raising the source concentration does push the detection edge outwards a little, because a taller curve crosses your threshold later. That is a real gain and it is the honest reason six reeds feels better than two in a large room. It is a step, not a room. And there is a limit to how useful even that is, because your nose does not respond in proportion to concentration — a large increase in what is in the air produces a much more modest increase in how strong it seems. Doubling the dose does not double the impression, and it never doubles the distance.

Reed count against strength, reach and weeks — the whole trade in one table

The same 50ml bottle at four settings, plus the two things that are not reed settings at all. Read the reach column downwards and notice that it barely moves until the last row, where the mechanism changes.

The reed-count trade
What each setting buys, and what it costs in calendar
Setting Strength at the bottle Reach across the room Life of a 50ml Best for
Two to three reeds ★ Soft, complete, unmistakably present at a metre Unchanged Roughly double — and in a 50 sq ft bathroom, close to three months Bedside, bathroom, small sealed rooms
Four reeds Clearly stronger at close range Unchanged in any way you would notice Between the two — a sensible middle A bedroom you sit in for hours
Six reeds Full projection — the top of the dial Edge shifts outward by a step 6–8 weeks in a room up to ~150 sq ft Living rooms, larger bedrooms, a busy hallway
More than six Reads as cloying rather than strong No further gain worth having Shorter again Nothing — this is the setting to avoid
Six reeds in a 130ml Same as six in a 50ml Identical — volume is duration, not coverage 14–18 weeks, for rooms above 150 sq ft When repurchasing is the annoyance
Ceiling fan on low Slightly higher everywhere The one row where reach genuinely improves Shorter — moving air evaporates faster Free, and the best advice on this page
Shop this guide
Evaporation you can control, and the transport you cannot
The SOSA principle
Evaporation is measured in millilitres a week. Projection is measured in metres. Reeds are a lever on the first unit and have no connection at all to the second.
Which is why a reed diffuser can be made to cost you more without ever being made to reach you further, and why the fix that works is usually free.

What genuinely buys projection, starting at nothing at all

A ceiling fan on low, with the door closed. If you take one action from this page, take this one. A fan supplies the moving air that a reed has no mechanism for producing, so it converts your existing evaporation into actual distribution — the same oil, reaching further, at no cost. Keep the bottle out of the direct downdraught so the reeds are not being stripped, run the fan at its lowest setting, and give it half an hour before you judge. The trade is that a bottle in moving air empties faster; you are spending calendar either way, and this is the version that gives you distance in return.

Halve the distance, and get the height right. Since what you own is a zone, put yourself in it. Moving the bottle from a far shelf to the table beside where you actually sit does more than any change of scent, any extra reed and any bigger bottle. Set it at or slightly below nose height on a surface — not on the floor, where the fragrance sits below you, and not on a high shelf, where you stand under it rather than in it.

Manage the air that leaves as well as the air that moves. An open window or balcony door removes fragrance: air that leaves takes it with it, and the bottle is not weaker, the room is being flushed. Cross-ventilation is a straight line between two openings, so keep the bottle off that line. A running AC in a closed room is genuinely helpful because recirculation distributes reasonably well — which is why a bedroom often smells strongest at night — though dry air speeds evaporation, so you gain distribution and lose weeks. The one placement to avoid outright is directly in the AC blast, which strips the reeds and throws everything at a single wall.

And rule out your own adaptation before spending anything. Receptors adapt to a constant stimulus within minutes; the signal keeps arriving and the brain stops reporting it. You can sit in a properly scented room and honestly smell nothing. Leave for fifteen minutes, walk back in, and ask someone who does not live there — a visitor is a better instrument than a resident. If guests notice it, the room is fragranced and more reeds would only make it too much for them.

You can pay for evaporation. Projection is not for sale in a reed diffuser at any price, which is why the fix for it is so often free.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Where the money goes if you do decide to spend it

If the free changes get you where you want to be, stop reading and keep the ₹1,899. If they do not — and for a genuinely large or open room they may not — then what you are buying is a mechanism with transport built into it, and the ladder below is in the order I would climb it. The last row is the gap in our own range, stated because leaving it out would make this page an advertisement rather than an answer.

If you are buying
From the cheapest honest change to the one that actually moves air
Buy What it is When it is the right answer Price
1. Nothing ★ Fan on low, door closed, bottle halved in distance and at nose height First, always — this is where most readers should stop Free
2. 300ml refill Roughly six 50ml fills of the scent you already own If you have decided you want six reeds and a strong close zone, and the repurchasing is the irritation ₹2,399
3. A 130ml reed 14–18 weeks rather than 6–8, in the band built for rooms above 150 sq ft When the room genuinely is larger — but for duration, not for distance ₹1,249–₹1,349
4. Sukoon ultrasonic 500ml, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, three 15ml Hotel Collection scents included When you want the room rather than the zone, on demand and switchable off ₹1,899
5. Safar waterless Undiluted oil, no water, no added humidity, cordless, three speeds, a 1 / 2 / 3-hour timer. Named and sold as a car and travel diffuser, with no published room coverage figure When you want waterless cold diffusion at personal scale and will accept recharging and a timer that stops ₹3,999
The honest gap: there is no rung between them SOSA makes no mid-sized waterless bedroom nebuliser. Vaayu at ₹11,999 is rated to 1000 m³, roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft, and in one bedroom nine-tenths of it is wasted Said outright, because Sukoon at ₹1,899 is very often the correct bedroom answer and should not be skipped on the way to something dearer ₹1,899
Honest notes for buyers: switching mechanism may mean switching scent — reed oil cannot go into an ultrasonic machine, the water-based Hotel Collection cannot go into reeds, and Safar takes pure fragrance oil. There is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser, and the ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a machine refill rather than a way into the range. SOSA publishes no oil-consumption rate for its machines, so no running cost is computed anywhere on this page. Reeds are alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant and 0 ppm formaldehyde, on a heat-stable CCT carrier rather than DPG, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, composed in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Evening Calm at three reeds ₹799 / 50ml
Kashmir lavender, real chamomile and a soft musk drydown, at 8.9 on the SOSA strength scale — deliberately the gentlest thing we compose. At three reeds on a bedside table it is a complete fragrance rather than a diluted one, and the bottle lasts roughly twice as long. If you have been running six reeds hoping for distance you were never going to get, this is the setting I would move you to: the same experience where you actually are, at roughly half the daily cost.

A note from Sonal

I could sell more oil by never writing this page, and that is roughly why I wrote it. Extra reeds are the most reliable way to increase what a customer spends per month without increasing what they get. Anyone selling reed diffusers knows it, and very few say it, because the deflating answer does not photograph well.

What I would rather you had is the vocabulary. Evaporation is a rate and it belongs to the bottle. Projection is a distance and it belongs to the room. Once those two words are separated in your head you will never again buy a bigger bottle hoping for coverage, or a stronger scent hoping for reach, and you will recognise instantly that the fan above your head is a piece of fragrance equipment you already own.

And do give the reed its due. It is silent, needs no socket, has nothing to fill or charge, cannot be forgotten, works right through a power cut and never breaks, for about ₹13 to ₹15 a day. It is an object rather than an appliance, which is a real thing to want. Everything is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl’s classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Does using more reeds increase projection or just evaporation?
Evaporation. More wetted fibre means more surface for oil to leave from, so the rate rises — millilitres per week. Projection is how far the resulting vapour travels, and that is decided by the room’s moving air, which a reed diffuser does not produce. You will notice a slightly wider strong zone because a higher source concentration crosses your detection threshold a little further out, but it is a step rather than a change of category, and the bottle finishes sooner.
How much faster will the bottle finish at six reeds?
A SOSA 50ml runs 6–8 weeks at six reeds in a room up to about 150 sq ft, roughly ₹13–₹15 a day. At three reeds it is a soft bedside level and lasts roughly twice as long, which by the same arithmetic roughly halves the daily cost. In a 50 sq ft bathroom, two or three reeds can stretch a 50ml to nearly three months — one of the best-value placements in the house, for efficiency rather than for masking anything, since fragrance does not remove a smell.
Am I wasting oil, or am I getting all of it?
You are getting all of it. Every millilitre in the glass leaves through the reeds and enters a room — nothing is trapped or lost. The only real waste is oil evaporating into a room nobody is in, which is a question of placement and of when you are home rather than a fault in the product. If a bedroom is empty from nine to seven, three reeds matches output to use far better than six.
Would a stronger fragrance project further than a mild one?
No. A stronger composition raises the amount of odorous material per millilitre, which raises the concentration at the source and leaves transport exactly as it was — the same axis as reed count, reached by a different route. Our strength scale runs 8.9 to 9.5 and measures perceived intensity in a room rather than quality or reach. Worth adding that a composition dosed too high does not read as strong; it flattens into one impression, which is what people mean when they say something smells like an air freshener.
What is the cheapest thing that actually increases projection?
A ceiling fan on low, in a closed room, with the bottle out of the direct downdraught. It costs nothing and it is the single most effective change available, because it supplies the transport a reed structurally lacks — it will shorten the bottle’s life, and you should know that before you switch it on. If you want to buy transport instead, the honest starting point is Sukoon at ₹1,899 for 270–320 sq ft, not Vaayu at ₹11,999, which covers roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft and is the wrong purchase for a single room.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, on the difference between evaporation rate and projection distance in a passive reed diffuser.
