Almost every firm treats these two spaces as one purchase, and they are not remotely the same job. A partner's cabin is a small closed room with one occupant who can decide for themselves and change their mind at four in the afternoon. The associates' floor is a large shared volume where nobody was consulted, twenty people breathe the same air for twelve hours, and there is no door to close. Different volumes, different consent, different equipment, and a rule about who gets to choose that is worth putting in writing.
Quick answers — read this first
Should a partner's cabin and the associates' floor be scented the same way? No. They are two different jobs. A partner's cabin is a small closed room, typically 120 to 180 sq ft, which at a ten-foot ceiling is 1,200 to 1,800 cubic feet, or roughly 34 to 51 cubic metres of air, with one occupant who chose the setting and can change it. That is a personal-space decision and a reed diffuser from Rs 749 is very often the right answer, or nothing at all. The associates' floor is a large shared open volume, often 1,000 to 1,500 sq ft, which at ten feet is 10,000 to 15,000 cubic feet, or about 283 to 425 cubic metres, occupied by people who did not choose the setting and cannot leave it. That one needs whisper calibration and a locked setting.

Why is an open associates' floor the most exposure-sensitive space in a law firm? Because of hours and consent together. Associates sit at the same desk for ten to twelve hours in litigation season, six days a week, in air they had no say in, with no door to close and no realistic way to move. Nobody else in the building is that exposed: partners come and go to court and to meetings, clients are there for an hour, the reception team can at least step out. That combination makes the floor the room where a strong setting does the most harm and where a sensitivity report matters most. Whisper calibration and a locked setting are standard, and any sensitivity report from a team member is a recalibration signal rather than a tolerance problem.

Can a partner run their preferred fragrance across the whole office? In their own cabin, yes, entirely. Across the floor, no. A cabin is a personal space with one occupant, and a partner who likes a fuller register - the St. Regis-inspired amber, violet and woods, say - can have exactly that in their own room and nobody else is affected. Extending that preference to an open floor of associates converts a personal choice into something twenty people have to breathe for a working day without having agreed to it. The floor is set to the most sensitive person on it, not to the most senior. Keep the strong one in the cabin, run something drier and quieter outside the door.
The short answer
Short answer: A partner's cabin and an associates' floor are two different scenting jobs. The cabin is one person's own small closed room, roughly 120 to 180 sq ft or 34 to 51 cubic metres at a ten-foot ceiling, occupied by somebody who can decide for themselves - so it is a personal-space decision, and a reed diffuser from Rs 749 is very often the right answer, or nothing. The associates' floor is a large shared open volume, often 283 to 425 cubic metres, where nobody chose the setting and twenty people breathe it for twelve hours - the most exposure-sensitive space in the firm, needing whisper calibration and a locked setting on a Sukoon Rs 1,899, Megh Rs 3,499 or Vaayu Rs 11,999. A partner who likes a strong scent should keep it in their own cabin. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
Should a partner's cabin and the associates' floor be scented differently, and who decides?
Two rooms, two jobs, and one rule about authority. 1. The cabin is a personal-space decision. A partner's cabin is typically 120 to 180 sq ft; at a ten-foot ceiling that is 1,200 to 1,800 cubic feet, or about 34 to 51 cubic metres. It has one occupant, a door, and somebody who can turn the thing off at four in the afternoon without asking anyone. There is no calibration problem to solve, because the person exposed is the person choosing. Reed diffusers from ₹749 are very often the right answer here - no power, no noise during a call, nothing to schedule, about six to ten weeks from a bottle - and so is nothing at all. 2. The floor is a shared-air decision. An open associates' area of 1,200 sq ft at ten feet is 12,000 cubic feet, about 340 cubic metres. Twenty people sit in it for ten to twelve hours in a bad week. None of them chose the register or the level, and none of them can close a door. That makes it the most exposure-sensitive space in the firm, above the reception and well above the meeting rooms. Whisper calibration, a locked setting, one named owner of the settings, and a standing rule that any sensitivity report drops the level that day without the person having to justify it. Hold it with a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, app and timer) or a Megh (₹3,499) rather than with a bottle somebody tops up by hand. 3. The rule. A partner who likes a strong scent should keep it in their own cabin. Seniority decides a great many things in a law firm and this is not one of them: the floor is set to the most sensitive person sitting on it. 4. Registers. Drier and quieter outside the cabin - the Westin-inspired white tea, aloe and cedar, or the 1 Hotels-inspired cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, from the Hotel Collection (from ₹299). Fuller registers stay behind a door. We claim no effect on any legal decision, client confidence, a retainer or a settlement. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: the cabin is one person's own room and a reed from ₹749 or nothing usually settles it; the floor is twenty people's shared air and needs whisper calibration and a locked setting - Megh ₹3,499, Vaayu ₹11,999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The commercial standard most businesses choose: the SOSA Vaayu - waterless cold-air scenting to ~1000m³, Bluetooth app and timer, one signature on schedule - at ₹11,999. Single rooms and consultation corners start on reeds from ₹749; cabin systems from ₹1,899; large-premises HVAC from ₹25,999. One room, one occupant, one consent - against twenty people who never chose

Three parts: why consent changes the brief entirely, what the associates' floor is actually exposed to, and the rule about whose preference travels.

Why this works
Two rooms, two jobs - and one rule about who chooses
1Cabin: 120-180 sq ft, about 34-51 cubic metres, one occupant who consents2Floor: 1,200 sq ft at 10 ft = 12,000 cu ft, about 340 cubic metres, shared3Cabin answer is often a reed from Rs 749, or nothing at all - it is personal4Floor answer is whisper calibration and a locked setting: Vaayu Rs 11,999
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
Consent
The variable that separates these two rooms is not size
Everybody assumes the difference between a cabin and a floor is volume, and volume is the smaller half of it. The real difference is who agreed. In a partner's cabin, the person breathing the fragrance is the person who chose the register, chose the level, and can walk over and turn it off mid-afternoon without a conversation. That is a closed loop, and it needs no policy, no calibration protocol and no named owner. It is furniture. On an open associates' floor the loop is broken in every direction: the register was chosen by somebody who does not sit there, the level was set by somebody who is out at court half the week, and the people actually exposed have no switch, no door, and in most firms no comfortable way to raise it. Consent is what turns a preference into an imposition, and it is why the same bottle of oil is a harmless personal choice in one room and a genuine problem twenty feet away. Once you see the two rooms in those terms, the equipment decision more or less makes itself, and so does the rule about who is allowed to change the setting.
Tip: the difference between these two rooms is consent, not cubic metres - and consent is what decides the level.
2
Exposure
Nobody in the building is as exposed as the associates
Run the hours honestly. A client is in the building for an hour. A partner is in and out - court, a client office, an arbitration, a call taken in the meeting room. The reception team sit in one place all day but can step into the corridor. An associate in a busy practice is at one desk, in one air, for ten hours on an ordinary day and twelve or more when a filing is due, six days a week, for years. Nobody else is close. That is why the floor, not the reception, is the most exposure-sensitive space in a law firm, even though the reception is the room everybody thinks about first. Practically it means three things. The setting on the floor should be lower than the setting anywhere else in the office. It should be locked, because olfactory adaptation guarantees that anyone who works in a scented room stops noticing it within a fortnight and then wants it turned up. And any team member should be able to report a sensitivity - a headache pattern that started when the machine did, a reaction, a migraine history - and have the level dropped that day without having to argue for it. A sensitivity report is a recalibration signal, never a tolerance problem, and in a firm where associates are junior to the people who set the level, saying so explicitly is the only way it actually works.
3
Authority
A partner who likes a strong scent should keep it in their own cabin
This is the sentence that most firms need and nobody writes down. Fragrance preference is genuinely personal, and a senior partner who likes a fuller, warmer register is not wrong to like it. The St. Regis-inspired register of amber, violet and polished woods (from ₹299) is the plushest of the seven and it agrees beautifully with a cabin of dark wood, leather and books. Put it in the cabin. Put it in the cabin at whatever level the occupant enjoys, on a reed diffuser from ₹749 that needs no power and makes no noise during a call, or on a Sukoon (₹1,899) if the room takes a machine. What should not happen is that preference walking out of the door and onto a floor of twenty people. Outside the cabin, run something drier and quieter - the Westin-inspired white tea, aloe and cedar, or the 1 Hotels-inspired cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves - at a level set by the most sensitive person on the floor rather than the most senior person in the firm. If the firm wants one signature everywhere, which is a reasonable thing to want, the way to get it is to choose the quiet register for the shared spaces and let the cabins vary, not to push the cabin's register outward. These are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand; we publish no throw or longevity ranking between them, because throw is set by the machine, the setting and the volume of the room.
Tip: seniority decides many things in a law firm - the level on the associates' floor is not one of them.
The SOSA principle
The cabin and the floor look like one purchase and are two decisions. One is a personal choice with a door on it; the other is shared air nobody agreed to.
A reed from Rs 749 or nothing settles most cabins. The floor needs a locked setting, a named owner and a rule that any sensitivity report drops the level that day.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Can associates just be told to raise it if the level bothers them?
They can be told, and in practice they mostly will not, which is why the rule has to be built rather than announced. An associate raising a comfort issue about a setting chosen by a partner is doing something socially costly in a hierarchical office, and the honest reading of silence on a law firm floor is not that everybody is happy. Two things make it real. First, ask directly and specifically rather than generally: not whether people like the scent, but whether anyone notices it at seven in the evening, whether anyone has had a headache pattern that began when the machine did, whether anyone would prefer it off. Second, make the response automatic and public - one report drops the setting that day, no justification required, no discussion. If the answer is automatic, people will use it.
What if the partner's cabin and the floor are not separated by a door?
Then you do not have two rooms, you have one volume with a desk in the corner of it, and the floor rule applies to all of it. This is common in newer fit-outs with glass cabins that stop short of the ceiling, or with a partner's desk at the end of an open bay. The test is airflow, not architecture: if you can smell the cabin from the nearest associate's desk, it is shared air and it is set to the most sensitive person in the shared volume. A cabin with a genuine door that is usually closed is a separate volume and can have its own register on a reed from Rs 749. A cabin with a glass wall and an open top is not. If in doubt, run it as one space, because the cost of being wrong falls on the people who cannot leave.
Is one register across the whole firm better than different ones by room?
One register in every shared space, and let the closed cabins do what they want. A client and a team member both move between reception, corridor, meeting room and floor in under a minute, and two different fragrances across that distance collide rather than sequence. So the shared spaces get one choice, held at different levels - lower on the associates' floor than in the reception, lower again if the floor is dense. A partner's cabin behind a closed door is genuinely separate, and so is a washroom, where a reed diffuser from Rs 749 is normal and does not need to match anything. What you are protecting is the walk-through, not the whole building.
Does a scented office floor help associates work better?
We will not claim that. There is no basis for telling you that a fragrance improves concentration, output, drafting quality or how long anyone can work, and we are not going to. What ambient scent research supports is improved evaluations of a space and the service delivered in it, at moderate effect sizes, with congruence and gentle intensity outperforming strong scenting. Applied to an associates' floor, the defensible reason to scent it at all is narrow and physical: an open office that has been occupied since eight in the morning develops its own smell by evening - lunch, the pantry, the printer, twenty people, the air-conditioning - and choosing what that air is instead of inheriting it is worth something. Ventilation does most of that work and fragrance finishes it.
Should the floor and the cabins run on the same schedule?
The shared spaces should, and the cabins do not need one at all. Put the floor and the front of house on a single schedule that starts before the first person arrives and stops after the office closes, which is what the app and timer on a Vaayu at Rs 11,999 are actually for - it removes the two failure modes, which are a machine running all night into an empty office and a machine nobody remembers to switch on. A cabin on reeds has no schedule and needs none, and a cabin on a small ultrasonic can simply be switched by the person sitting in it. Do not put the cabins on the office schedule; that turns a personal decision back into a central one, which is the mistake this whole page is about.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
