2. Then look at how full you fill it. Clothes are cleaned and rinsed by moving through water, not by sitting in it. A drum packed to the top does not tumble, so detergent is never fully rinsed out and stays in the fibre.

The machine is the first suspect, not the last
Almost everybody arriving at this question has already rewashed the clothes, changed detergent twice, and concluded that something is wrong with the water. The reason none of that worked is that the smell is usually being applied during the wash rather than surviving it. A washing machine is a sealed plastic vessel that spends its life warm and wet, and modern laundry habits — cool cycles, liquid detergent, generous fabric conditioner, the door shut between loads — are close to ideal conditions for something to establish itself inside one. Once it has, the machine is not cleaning your clothes so much as sharing with them.

Load size, dose, and the hour after the cycle ends
Start with the maintenance wash, because it is the reset and everything else is upkeep. Empty drum, no clothes, the hottest and longest cycle the machine offers — 90 degrees where it exists, the cotton boil wash otherwise — with either a proprietary machine cleaner or a large cup of white vinegar in the drum and nothing in the detergent drawer. Run it once a month. Heat is doing the work here: the entire problem is caused by never running the machine at a temperature that emulsifies fat, and one hot cycle a month restores what thirty daily cool ones remove. Before you press start, pull the detergent drawer fully out of its housing, take it apart if it comes apart, and scrub both the drawer and the roof of the cavity it sits in with an old toothbrush; that cavity is where the sludge people find most alarming actually lives. Then check the filter at the bottom front of the machine, which is behind a small hatch most people have never opened, and empty it over a bowl. Afterwards, the routine that keeps it clean is three habits and none of them costs anything: peel the gasket back and wipe the fold dry after the last wash of the day, leave the door standing open between loads, and pull the detergent drawer out an inch so the cavity can dry. A machine that dries out between uses cannot hold a biofilm, and that single change resolves the majority of these cases within two or three weeks.
Then the load itself, which is where the smell either recurs or does not. Fill the drum to about two-thirds — a flat hand between the top of the load and the roof of the drum — and never past it. Measure the detergent with the cap rather than pouring it, at half to two-thirds of the marked line for lightly worn urban clothes, and use an extra rinse cycle if the machine has one and you suspect years of residue. Skip fabric conditioner on towels permanently, and use it sparingly on everything else; the softness it gives is a coating, and coatings accumulate. Then the drying, which in this country decides the outcome for four months of the year. Spin at the highest speed the fabric will take, because every extra revolution is water you do not have to evaporate. Hang garments with air on both faces and space between them rather than doubled over a line. Indoors in monsoon, a pedestal fan moving air across an airer does more than an open window onto a wet afternoon, which is importing exactly the humidity you are trying to lose. And nothing goes into a cupboard until it is dry to the back of the hand, cool rather than faintly warm — a garment folded while very slightly damp finishes its drying inside a closed wardrobe, which is how one shirt makes a whole cupboard smell.
Then the part where a fragrance company is expected to sell you something, and does not. None of the six causes on this page is addressed by adding a scent, and adding one to a garment that carries a sour note gives you the sour note and the scent together rather than replacing the first with the second. A nose does not blend two smells into an average; it detects difference, and it detects a familiar fragrance sitting on top of an unfamiliar sourness particularly well. I get this question more often than any other in this group, usually from somebody who has already spent money trying to solve it, and my answer disappoints people for about a minute before it relieves them. It is the machine. Not the water, not the detergent brand, not the clothes and not, in the overwhelming majority of cases, anything you have done wrong except keep the door shut. A washing machine run at thirty degrees with liquid detergent and closed up after every load is a warm damp box with a permanent food supply in it, and what establishes itself in the gasket fold is then rinsed over everything you own.
So the whole of my advice is a hot empty wash once a month and a door left open, and I have watched that fix four-year-old complaints in a fortnight. What I will not do is sell you a fragrance for it, because there is nothing in my range that would help and I am not going to invent one.
