Part five, placement, which decides whether any of the above works. The governing rule is one line: out of sight is fine, shut in is fatal. A cold-air unit disperses into the air immediately around it and relies on the room's circulation to carry it, so a console or sideboard with an open back, the space under a console table, a low open shelf, a wall niche or a ventilated media unit all work exactly as well as standing in the open. A closed cupboard, a drawer, a sealed cabinet or a position behind a heavy curtain does not, at any price, because it scents the enclosure rather than the room. The crude test that is right almost every time: imagine a cup of tea steaming where the machine will sit and ask whether the steam would reach the room. Then four rules that decide evenness. Inside the connected volume, rather than in a side room where the socket happened to be free, because putting it in a side room means scenting the side room. Low rather than high, because warm air rises and will carry the register upward on its own - which is also why a unit near the base of a stairwell reaches an upstairs landing without a second machine, and why a double-height room wants it at floor level. Then the schedule, which is placement in time. Run it so it finishes before you need the room rather than starting when you walk into it: settled air has distributed itself evenly and reads as the character of the building, while air being actively scented while people stand in it has a source and a gradient and reads as a product working. Before the family gets home. Before people arrive, with a comfortable margin rather than a nervous one. Off overnight. And the level, which is the discipline underneath everything. Aim below the point at which a guest can name it: lovely house is a pass, what is that fragrance is a fail. Ask the first person through the door rather than trusting your own nose, and treat two independent comments about strength as an instruction. A home holds children, elderly parents, pregnant family members and pets who breathe this air for far longer than any guest does, and anyone reporting a headache is a recalibration signal rather than a complaint to argue with. Finally, the step that comes before all five parts. If the house smells stale, musty or of cooking, nothing here fixes it: clear the source - the shoe cabinet at the door, the bin, damp mats, a dried-out floor trap in a bathroom nobody uses, which you fix by running the tap for thirty seconds - and cross-ventilate with two windows open on opposite sides for ten minutes, remembering that air-conditioning recirculates rather than replaces air. Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. If I read only one thing on this page, what should it be?
The connected-volume rule, because it decides everything else. A coverage rating in cubic metres assumes one continuous body of air, and no machine at any price, setting or placement pushes scent through a closed door, because the mechanism is air movement and there is none between a passage and a sealed room. That single fact turns every villa into two problems rather than one. Problem one is the connected living volume - in most homes the entrance running into the living room, into dining, with a passage and a stair void off it and no door shut between them on an ordinary day - and one SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 holds one register evenly across all of it, rated at approximately 1000 cubic metres, which at a ten foot ceiling is roughly 3,500 square feet. Problem two is the rooms that stay shut, and the honest fix is a reed from Rs 749 each rather than a second machine. So the useful measurement is not the size on your sale deed, it is the floor area that is genuinely open to itself, times your ceiling height, divided by 35.3. Everything else on this page follows from that one distinction.
How do I work out my own coverage figure in ten minutes?
Walk the house on an ordinary weekday afternoon rather than a Saturday, because the two answers differ and the weekday one is the truth. Step one, count the doors between your front door and where the family actually sits in the evening: none means a genuinely connected volume, two or three means a partitioned home where reeds from Rs 749 per room are the correct answer to your layout rather than a compromise. Step two, add up only the floor area that is open to itself and ignore every room that stays shut. Step three, multiply that by your ceiling height for cubic feet, then divide by 35.3 for cubic metres. At a ten foot ceiling the results come out like this: 1,500 square feet is 15,000 cubic feet, about 425 cubic metres; 2,000 is about 566; 2,500 is about 708; 3,000 is about 850; 4,000 is about 1,133. The Vaayu is approximately 1000 cubic metres. Step four, if any of that space is double height, measure it separately, because 600 square feet at a twenty foot ceiling is 12,000 cubic feet, about 340 cubic metres. Step five, count the rooms that stay shut, because that number is your reed count.
Can I use the Rs 299 Hotel Collection bottle in the Vaayu?
No, and this is the one mistake in the SOSA range worth being emphatic about, because it is easy to make and the two products share the same seven register names on the label. The Vaayu runs waterless nebulising oil: it holds no water at all, which is why it produces no mist, no damp and no residue ring, and why it can be rated for approximately 1000 cubic metres of connected air.
