Founder Diaries · Reed Diffusers & Room Scenting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated August 2026
You have almost certainly already tried it, or you are about to. The reeds are cheap, the bottle is right there, and pushing in a few more feels like the obvious first move. Here is the straight answer before anything else: it will work, but not in the way you are hoping. Adding reeds raises how fast the oil evaporates. That makes the air around the bottle smell stronger and it makes the bottle run down sooner. It does not give the fragrance any new ability to travel. Below is exactly why, and what actually changes the thing you are trying to change.
Quick answers — read this first
Should I add more reeds to make my reed diffuser stronger? Add them if you want the air near the bottle to smell stronger, and know what you are buying with them. Each reed is another wick, so more reeds mean more wet surface exposed to the air and a higher evaporation rate. The concentration right around the bottle goes up, and because oil is now leaving the bottle faster, the bottle empties sooner. What does not change is reach. Nothing in a reed diffuser carries scent outward, so raising the production rate simply builds a denser cloud in the same small pocket of air. You get a more intense hot spot and a shorter-lived diffuser, which is a real trade and worth making deliberately.

Will more reeds help my whole room smell of it? No. That is the honest answer and it is worth being blunt about, because it saves you money and disappointment. Reed count controls one variable only: how quickly oil turns into vapour at the sticks. Room coverage is controlled by something else entirely, which is whether anything is moving that vapour around. In a reed diffuser nothing is. Scent leaves the reeds and then drifts, slowly and in no particular direction, while your fan, your AC and your open door remove it. Doubling the reeds doubles the rate at which you feed that system without giving the system any means of distribution. The corner gets better. The room does not.

What actually makes a whole room smell of the fragrance? Active diffusion, which means a machine that puts energy behind the scent instead of waiting for the air to come and collect it. For one ordinary bedroom the honest and cheaper answer is an ultrasonic: Boond Rs 899, Sukoon Rs 1,899 or Megh 6L Rs 3,499, running the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299. The trade-off in our own words is that it mixes oil with water, which adds humidity, can dilute the scent and can leave white dust where water is hard. If instead you want it strong and true in the exact place you sit or sleep, the waterless cordless SOSA Safar is Rs 3,999. For a large or open-plan space, the SOSA Vaayu is Rs 11,999.
The short answer
Short answer: More reeds make it stronger at the bottle and shorter-lived, and add no reach whatsoever. Each reed is a wick, so extra reeds increase the exposed wet surface and therefore the evaporation rate; the air near the bottle gets denser and the oil is consumed faster. Nothing in the design carries that scent across a room, so the result is a more intense hot spot, not a scented room. Keep the reed for ambience where it stands, from Rs 749. For a whole ordinary bedroom, an active ultrasonic from Rs 899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299. For strong undiluted scent where you sit or sleep, the waterless SOSA Safar Rs 3,999. For a large or open-plan room, the SOSA Vaayu Rs 11,999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: keep the reed from ₹749 for ambience near where it stands; an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 when you want the whole room evenly; the SOSA Safar (₹3,999, waterless and cordless, three hotel-inspired blends included) when you want it strong and true in the space you sit in; the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for a large or open-plan room.

Why it smells near the bottle - at a glanceStep 1 - a reed diffuser is passive: oil evaporates, nothing pushes itStep 2 - so it is strongest at the bottle and fades with distanceStep 3 - whole room evenly? An active diffuser from ₹899Step 4 - strong where you sit or sleep? Safar ₹3,999Keep the reed too · from ₹749, no power needed
Nothing has gone wrong with your reed diffuser. A reed is a passive system: the oil climbs the sticks and evaporates at whatever rate your room's warmth and air movement allow, and no part of it pushes scent anywhere. That is exactly why it is lovely at arm's length and quiet across the room. What has changed is what you now want from it. Ambience near where the bottle stands is one job; a whole room that smells of it, or a strong true scent right where you sit, is a different job, and a different job needs a different tool. This guide explains the mechanism first, then tells you honestly which tool matches which wish.
Straight answer
Does adding more reeds make a reed diffuser stronger?
Yes, and only in one place. Every reed is a wick. Oil climbs it by capillary action and evaporates from the length of stick standing above the bottle neck, so the total amount of fragrance entering the air per hour is set by how much wet reed surface is exposed. Put in more reeds and you expose more surface, which raises the evaporation rate. Two things follow, both of them certain. 1. The air near the bottle gets stronger. More vapour is being released into the same small pocket of air, so the concentration you meet when you lean towards the console or the bedside table climbs noticeably. 2. The bottle empties faster. That fragrance is coming out of a fixed amount of oil, and you have just increased the rate at which you spend it. A bottle that would have given you its usual run of about 6 to 10 weeks at the reed count it came with will be finished sooner, in rough proportion to how many extra sticks you added. And here is the part nobody says out loud: none of it travels any further than it did before. A reed diffuser has a production rate but no delivery system. There is no fan, no heat, no pressure, nothing that pushes scent outward, so raising production simply piles more fragrance into the same few feet of air while your ceiling fan clears the rest of the room at the same speed as always. What you have bought with those extra reeds is a more intense hot spot and a shorter-lived bottle. That is a perfectly good trade if the hot spot is where you sit. It is the wrong purchase if what you want is the room. The honest routing. Keep the reed diffuser from ₹749 for ambience beside where it stands. For a whole ordinary bedroom, an active Boond at ₹899 or Sukoon at ₹1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 is both the right tool and the cheaper one, accepting the added humidity, some dilution and possible white dust in hard-water areas. For strong, undiluted scent in the spot you actually occupy, the waterless SOSA Safar is ₹3,999. Tell us your room size on WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 and we will place you honestly. What you already own SOSA Reed Diffusers (passive) from ₹749 The product this guide starts from, and it is not the problem. Alcohol-free oil, a few reeds, no power and nothing to fail - lovely ambience near where the bottle stands, for about 6 to 10 weeks. See it on the store →Ask on WhatsApp

The two halves of the question, answered separately

Reed count answers one of these questions completely and the other not at all.

Why this happens in your room
What extra reeds change, and the one thing they cannot
1More reeds means more wet surface exposed, so a higher evaporation rate2Stronger air right at the bottle - that part genuinely works3Faster consumption of a fixed amount of oil, so the bottle ends sooner4Zero extra reach, because nothing in a reed carries scent outward
Keep the reed where it already works, from ₹749. If you want the whole room, an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection is the honest and cheaper first upgrade. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 is waterless and cordless.
1
Half one
Yes - it does get stronger, right where the bottle stands
Give the reeds their due, because this half of the answer is a real yes. A reed is a bundle of tiny channels, and oil climbs it the way water climbs a paper towel. Wherever the wet stick meets air, oil evaporates. So the amount of fragrance entering your room per hour is essentially a function of how much wet reed surface is standing in the open. Add sticks and you add surface, and the release rate rises with it. You will notice this within a few hours, not days. The air immediately around the bottle carries a heavier dose than it did, the moment when you walk past the console becomes more definite, and if the bottle sits on your bedside table you may find it has gone from pleasant to slightly insistent. This is not a placebo and we are not going to pretend otherwise. If your complaint was that the fragrance was too faint even standing next to it, extra reeds are a genuine and almost free fix, and you should use them.
Tip: if your problem is at the bottle, extra reeds solve it - try one or two more before you buy anything.
2
Half two
No - it does not get any further, and it never will
Now the half people are actually asking about, and here there is nothing to soften. Reach in a reed diffuser is not produced by the reeds. It is produced by whatever moves air, and inside the bottle-and-sticks system the answer is nothing at all. Fragrance evaporates off the reeds into the air touching them and then spreads only by drifting into neighbouring air, which is slow, directionless and easily undone by a ceiling fan, an AC, an open door or people walking through. Increasing the evaporation rate raises how much fragrance is entering that pocket of air. It does not hand the fragrance a means of transport, so the extra vapour simply makes the pocket denser rather than wider. Picture a tap running into a shallow bowl with no channel leading away from it: opening the tap wider fills the bowl faster and raises the level in it, and the water still goes nowhere else. That is precisely what an extra reed does. The far side of the room is not underserved because the bottle is producing too little. It is underserved because there is no route from the bottle to it.
3
The cost
And you pay for the stronger hot spot in weeks
The oil in your bottle is a fixed quantity, and evaporation rate is the speed at which you spend it. Raise the rate and you shorten the run - there is no version of this where the bottle produces more per hour for the same number of weeks. A SOSA reed diffuser gives about 6 to 10 weeks at the reed count it ships with, depending on your room's warmth and air movement, and adding sticks pulls that towards the shorter end and past it, roughly in proportion to how many you add. It is worth being clear-eyed about what that buys you. If you sit or sleep within arm's reach of the bottle, a stronger near-field scent for fewer weeks may be exactly the trade you want, and refilling is straightforward with a 300ml refill at ₹2,399 or 500ml at ₹3,499. If you were adding reeds in the hope of reaching the sofa on the far wall, you are spending oil faster to buy something the extra oil cannot deliver. That is the moment to stop and change tool rather than change reed count: an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the Hotel Collection from ₹299, or the waterless SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 for the space you occupy.
Tip: more reeds is a dial for intensity and lifespan, never a dial for distance.
The SOSA principle
Reeds control how fast the oil leaves the bottle. Nothing in a reed diffuser controls where it goes. That is why adding sticks always makes it stronger and never makes it further.
A higher evaporation rate, a denser pocket of air at the bottle, a shorter run - and the identical reach you had yesterday.

The ladder from passive to active, in order - tap any image to see it on the store
Start where you already are. Reed diffusers from ₹749 are passive: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849 and Fresh Brew ₹849, with 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. They give you ambience near where the bottle stands, with no power, no noise and nothing that can fail, and they are still the right product for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. If you want the room itself to smell of it, that needs an active diffuser: Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 or Megh ₹3,499 running the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (100ml refill ₹999, or the Pack of 7 at 15ml for ₹1,799). That is the honest first upgrade for a single ordinary bedroom, and it costs less than the Safar. Its trade-off, in our own words: an ultrasonic mixes the fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave a fine white dust on nearby surfaces. If you would rather have no water at all and want the scent strong and true in the space you actually occupy, the SOSA Safar ₹3,999 is waterless, cordless and rechargeable, diffusing pure undiluted oil by cold diffusion. For a large room or a connected open-plan space, the SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 is the genuine whole-space answer at approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, and it is honestly more machine than a small bedroom needs.

The SOSA edit, passive to active

Whatever your room looks like, the logic is the same, and it has nothing to do with how big or smart your home is. A passive reed gives you scent near where it stands, and that is genuinely the right answer for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. An active diffuser moves scent into the air instead of waiting for the air to come and collect it, which is the only thing that turns "lovely next to the bottle" into "the room smells of it". Every SOSA product is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is where each one honestly belongs.

Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. Ventilation and cleaning come first. If a room smells stale, damp or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it; fragrance laid on top of that only makes a more complicated smell, and it never substitutes for either. Homes are shared. Households include children, elderly relatives, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than a visitor does, so gentle dosing is the default and the settings we suggest are lower than any machine can run. Anyone reporting a headache is a recalibration signal, not a complaint to argue with: turn it down or turn it off, and tell us. The Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each ship with their own blends; the Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and belongs in the ultrasonic machines only, and the two formats are not interchangeable. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. A note from Sonal

There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.

So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. If you want the whole room to smell of something when you walk in, that needs a machine that actively moves scent into the air, and the honest first step there is one of our ultrasonics, which costs less than our waterless diffuser does. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, with no water and no dilution, that is the Safar. And if your living space is genuinely large or open-plan, that is the Vaayu, which I will happily tell you is far too much machine for a 10 by 12 bedroom.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and I have had this conversation hundreds of times, and I would much rather talk someone out of a purchase than sell them a disappointment. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your room's approximate size and a line about where you actually sit or sleep in it - the bed, the desk, the sofa, the corner you read in - and we will tell you which of these you need, including when the answer is none of them. I read those messages myself. Everything is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your room gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom.

Frequently asked questions

How many extra reeds is too many?
There is no fixed number, because it depends on your bottle, your room's warmth and how close you sit. The practical test is your own nose over about a week. Add one or two sticks, live with it for a few days, and see whether the room feels pleasant or slightly headachy when you walk in. If a fragrance starts to feel insistent rather than welcoming, that is a recalibration signal and the fix is to pull a reed or two back out, which you can do at any time. Gentle dosing is the sensible default in any home, and more so in a household with children, elderly relatives, a pregnant family member or pets. The other limit is practical rather than sensory: every extra reed shortens the bottle's run, so at some point you are paying real money in refills for a strength gain you stopped noticing.
If I take reeds out again, does the diffuser go back to normal?
Yes, and it is one of the genuinely reversible things about a reed diffuser. Pull a stick out and you have removed that much wet surface from the air, so the evaporation rate drops back and the scent near the bottle settles down within a few hours. The oil you have already used is gone, so you do not recover the weeks, but the strength returns to where it was. Discard the reeds you take out rather than saving them, because a used reed has been drawing oil and dust through its channels and putting it back later tends to bring a slightly muddied version of the fragrance with it. This is why we suggest treating reed count as a dial you adjust slowly, one or two at a time, over a week rather than all at once.
My friend says eight reeds made her room smell amazing. Was she wrong?
She was right about what she smelled and wrong about why. Almost certainly her bottle sits in a small enclosed room, and small enclosed rooms are where a passive diffuser is at its best: there is very little air to dilute into and almost none of it leaves, so a higher evaporation rate builds a concentration that fills the entire space. A 60 sq ft bathroom at a 10 ft ceiling holds about 600 cubic feet of air, roughly 17 cubic metres, and eight reeds in that box genuinely can make the whole room smell of it. Do the same in a 150 sq ft bedroom, which is about 42 cubic metres with a fan running, and the same eight reeds give you a stronger bedside table and an unchanged far wall. The reeds behaved identically. The rooms did not.
Would thicker or longer reeds work better than more reeds?
They are all doing the same job through the same variable, which is exposed wet surface. A thicker reed carries more oil and presents more surface; a longer reed standing higher out of the neck exposes more of itself to the air; more reeds add more sticks. Each of those raises the evaporation rate, and each of those therefore makes the bottle stronger at close range and shorter-lived. None of them adds a mechanism for carrying scent across a room, because there is no such mechanism anywhere in the format. So choose reed thickness and length for the look you want and the intensity you want beside the bottle, and treat all three as the same single dial. If distance is the problem, the dial you need is not on the bottle at all.
So is my reed diffuser just the wrong product for me?
Almost certainly not. What has changed is the job you are asking of it. A reed diffuser is superb at what it was built for: quiet, continuous ambience near where it stands, with no power, no noise, nothing to switch on and nothing to fail, for about 6 to 10 weeks at a time. In a bathroom, a study, a guest room, an entry console or beside a bed it is genuinely the right product and we would not replace it. What has happened is that your expectation has moved from ambience to projection, and projection is a different job needing a different tool. Keep the reed where it already works, and add an active diffuser for the room you want filled: an ultrasonic from Rs 899 for one ordinary bedroom, the waterless Safar at Rs 3,999 for strong scent in the spot you occupy.

Facts verified August 2026: A reed diffuser is a passive system - oil travels up the reeds by capillary action and evaporates at the rate the room's temperature and air movement allow, so concentration is highest at the bottle and falls away with distance. A SOSA reed diffuser lasts about 6 to 10 weeks. Reed prices: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. An active diffuser adds energy to move fragrance into the air. SOSA's ultrasonic machines are Boond (₹899), Sukoon (₹1,899) and Megh 6L (₹3,499); they run the water-based SOSA Hotel Collection, 15ml ₹299, 100ml refill ₹999, Pack of 7 at 15ml ₹1,799. An ultrasonic mixes fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust. The SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser with a 2000 mAh battery, diffusing pure undiluted oil with no water and no white dust; SOSA's own copy lists it as best for car, handbag, work desk, bedside, hotel and travel, work-from-home and gifting. It ships with three hotel-inspired waterless blends, chosen as one of three bundles: Ritz-Carlton Inspired, Westin Inspired and 1 Hotels Inspired; St. Regis Inspired, Shangri-La Inspired and Four Seasons Inspired; or W Hotels Inspired, Ritz-Carlton Inspired and Westin Inspired. No square-foot or cubic-metre coverage figure is published for the Safar, so none is stated here or anywhere else by us; it is a personal-space diffuser, not a whole-room machine. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air system covering approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, with a Bluetooth app and timer, and it ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends included in the box. Format distinction: the Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each arrive with their own blends, while the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and goes into the ultrasonic machines only. The two formats are not interchangeable. Scent perception is personal and varies between people in the same room, and coverage figures assume connected air volume rather than closed doors. Ventilation and cleaning come first; fragrance is an addition to a well-kept room and never a substitute for either, and we make no health, therapeutic or air-purification claims. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any hotel brand. Made in India, cruelty-free and vegan. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Questions about a specific room are answered on WhatsApp: +91 96192 18531.
