What does an open plan make more important? Extraction. With no door between hob and sofa, aerosolised cooking oil reaches the soft furnishings of the living area within seconds and is released slowly for days.
Is an open plan good or bad for fragrance overall? Both. It is the condition that makes a large machine worthwhile, and it is also the condition that makes kitchen discipline the most valuable habit in the house.
It helps the machine and hurts almost everything else
An open floor plan is the single most consequential architectural feature for home fragrance, and it is worth being honest that it works in both directions. Almost everything written about open plans and fragrance covers only the favourable half. Start with the favourable half, because it is real and it is the reason our largest machine exists. A machine distributes fragrance through connected moving air, and cannot cross a closed door at any price or setting. So what it serves is a connected volume. In a compartmented house, that volume is small - a hall with rooms sealed off it - and a machine is a poor purchase, which is why we spend most of our size pages recommending bottles. In a genuinely open plan, where the living area runs into a dining hall, the passage is part of the same space, and the stairwell opens off it without a door, the ground floor is one large body of circulating air. There, one device replaces six or eight separate sources, with one fragrance to buy, one schedule to set and, in a waterless machine, nothing to fill before an evening or empty afterwards. That is the condition under which the Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is the right purchase, and it should be verified rather than assumed - walk the floor at an ordinary hour of an ordinary day, changing nothing, and count the closed doors between those spaces. Zero qualifies it. Now the unfavourable half, which follows from exactly the same physics. Connected air does not distinguish between what you released deliberately and what arrived from the kitchen. In a house with a closed kitchen door, cooking smell is a contained problem: it stays in the kitchen, extraction removes most of it, and what escapes is diluted. In an open plan there is often no door at all, and the hob may be four or five metres from the sofa. Cooking smell is not a smell in the air that dissipates; it is aerosolised oil. It travels, and it settles onto whatever is nearby, preferentially onto porous soft surfaces - the sofa, the cushions, the curtains, the rug. Those materials then release it slowly, for days. And here is the part that connects the two halves: those same soft furnishings are the reservoir that holds your fragrance and gives it back as a steady background. They do not discriminate. A textile-rich open-plan living area is simultaneously the best place for a fragrance layer to work and the worst place for cooking residue to end up, because the same property produces both. The honest conclusion is that an open plan raises the value of kitchen extraction considerably more than it raises the value of fragrance. Using the hood every single time, at full speed, from before the pan gets hot rather than after the smoke appears, and leaving it running for a few minutes afterwards, does more for how an open-plan home smells than any product we sell. Where a door exists between kitchen and living area, closing it while cooking is worth doing even in an otherwise open house. And fragrance layered over unextracted cooking smell is worse than nothing: the combination of a covering register and an underlying one is instantly legible to anybody walking in, and it reads as concealment rather than care. Two secondary effects of open plans worth knowing. Sound travels through connected air too, which is why open-plan rooms often feel effortful, and the remedy - rugs, curtains, upholstery - is the same material intervention that gives the room its fragrance reserve. And a large open plan is frequently long or L-shaped, in which case a single source produces a strong pocket near itself and an empty far end; the fix is a second modest point placed apart rather than a higher setting, exactly as a long room is lit with two lamps rather than one bright bulb.
Both sides of an open plan
Both sides of an open plan. The favourable half: verify it with a closed-door walk at an ordinary hour, counting the doors between living, dining, passage and stair, and let zero qualify the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 - waterless with no tank to fill or empty, coverage up to 1,000 m², Bluetooth app and timer control - with the SOSA Megh at Rs 3,499 and a 6L tank for a partly open plan. Place it at console or table height in the part of the room people walk into, out of the direct throw of an air conditioner, on one or two longer cycles anchored to arrivals. In a long or L-shaped open plan, add a second modest point placed apart rather than raising the setting, since a single point leaves the far end empty - and the second point can simply be a reed diffuser. The unfavourable half, which matters more: extraction over the hob used every single time, at full speed, switched on before the pan is hot rather than after smoke appears, and left running for a few minutes afterwards; and where a door exists between kitchen and living area, closed while cooking even in an otherwise open house. Nothing in the kitchen at any time, from anything - fragrance over unextracted cooking smell produces a two-part result anybody arriving reads as concealment. Soft furnishing, which serves three purposes at once in an open plan: it shortens the reverberation that makes open rooms effortful, softens the evening light, and gives the room the reserve that holds fragrance and releases it slowly - while also being what holds cooking residue, so it wants regular cleaning. Rooms behind closed doors, unaffected: reed diffusers from Rs 749 through to Rs 849, three to four months per bottle, refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml. Fragrance for machines: Hotel Collection at Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, at three to six drops per tank, rinsing between scents; it is not reed diffuser oil. Never scented: children's rooms, the dining area during a meal, and covered terraces and balconies. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards.

Versailles
Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.
And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer). Listed prices are per-unit store prices; volume pricing and branding are quoted on WhatsApp. The Hotel Collection and hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel or perfume house named for comparison.
