The question comes up in every practice with a broad portfolio. On Tuesday morning you are presenting a carved-timber, deep-colour, layered scheme for a family home in Jaipur; by three in the afternoon a couple are sitting in the same chairs looking at a white, glass and steel apartment in Lower Parel. Which of those two does the room smell like? Neither, is the honest answer, and the reason is not a compromise. Your register is not a component of the scheme on the screen. It is a property of the room the client is sitting in, and that room is yours.
Quick answers — read this first
What scent should a design studio choose if it works in many different styles? One that agrees with the studio rather than with any one project. Congruence in ambient scenting is between the fragrance and the space a person is physically standing in, not the space they are looking at on a screen, so the correct reference is your own interior, your own materials and the way your practice presents itself. That argues for the quiet neutral end of the range: the Ritz-Carlton-inspired register (white tea, bergamot, cedar), the Westin-inspired register (white tea, aloe, cedar), or the 1 Hotels-inspired register (cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves) for a harder-edged concrete and timber studio. All three are from Rs 299 and none of them declares a style the way a heavy amber or a night-blooming jasmine does.

Should a studio change its scent to match the project being presented? No, and it is the most tempting mistake in this section. Rotating the register per client turns a signature into a costume, and it fails in three ways: nobody in the practice can hold a consistent calibration across several fragrances, the room never settles into one character because materials and upholstery hold what was in the air last week, and a client who visits twice notices the change and reads it as theatre rather than as attention. One register, held at one level, all year, is what reads as a practice that has itself together. The variation belongs in your presentation, not in your air.

Which registers are wrong for a studio with a mixed portfolio? The ones with an opinion. The St. Regis-inspired register (amber, violet, woods) is plush and evening-elegant and reads as a specific decorative position; the Shangri-La-inspired register (jasmine, green tea, white tea) is a beautiful floral that declares a style before the client has seen anything; the W Hotels-inspired register (citrus, pepper, amber) is the boldest of the seven and takes over a small room; and the Four Seasons-inspired register (citrus, floral, sandalwood) is warm and gracious but sits closer to hospitality than to a working studio. None of them are bad, and all four are excellent somewhere else. In a room that has to host many aesthetics in one week, they are simply saying more than the room should say.
The short answer
Short answer: Choose a register that agrees with the studio, not with any one project, because congruence is between the fragrance and the room a person is standing in rather than the scheme on the screen. That points to the quiet neutral end: Ritz-Carlton-inspired (white tea, bergamot, cedar), Westin-inspired (white tea, aloe, cedar), or 1 Hotels-inspired (cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves) for a harder-edged concrete and timber space. Registers from Rs 299. Do not rotate the fragrance per client - one register at one level all year is what reads as a practice with a point of view. These are character descriptions only; SOSA publishes no throw or longevity comparison. Vaayu Rs 11,999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
My practice works across very different styles. What should the studio itself smell like?
Four decisions. 1. Choose for the studio, not for the project. Congruence works between a fragrance and the room a person is physically in. Your client is sitting in your studio looking at a picture of somewhere else, so the reference is your walls, your materials and your practice - not the scheme on the screen. 2. That points to the quiet end. Three registers from the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) work in a room that has to host many aesthetics: the Ritz-Carlton-inspired blend (white tea, bergamot, cedar), soft and polished with a little lift; the Westin-inspired blend (white tea, aloe, cedar), the most serene and the driest of the two white teas; and the 1 Hotels-inspired blend (cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves), green and earthy, for a studio built from concrete, steel and raw timber. 3. Leave the opinionated four in the hotel lobby. St. Regis-inspired (amber, violet, woods) is plush and evening-elegant; Shangri-La-inspired (jasmine, green tea, white tea) is a declared floral; W Hotels-inspired (citrus, pepper, amber) is the boldest of the seven; Four Seasons-inspired (citrus, floral, sandalwood) is warm hospitality. Fine registers, all of them saying more than a working studio should. 4. Do not rotate it. One register, one level, all year, held by a Vaayu (₹11,999) on a schedule or a Sukoon (₹1,899) in a compact studio. Changing the fragrance per client is theatre, and clients who visit twice notice. These are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand; we describe character only and publish no comparison of throw or longevity. Your team breathe this all day, so their calibration decides the level. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: the register agrees with your studio, not with the project on the screen - white tea with bergamot or aloe over cedar, or cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves for a harder room. From ₹299, held by a Vaayu at ₹11,999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The commercial standard most businesses choose: the SOSA Vaayu - waterless cold-air scenting to ~1000m³, Bluetooth app and timer, one signature on schedule - at ₹11,999. Single rooms and consultation corners start on reeds from ₹749; cabin systems from ₹1,899; large-premises HVAC from ₹25,999. Congruence is with the room you are standing in

Three parts: why congruence points at your room rather than the client's, what the three usable registers actually smell like, and why rotation is the failure mode.

Why this works
One register for a practice with many aesthetics
1Congruence is with the room the client sits in - and that room is yours2White tea with bergamot, or with aloe, over cedar: the quiet neutral end3Cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves for a concrete, steel and timber studio4One register, one level, all year - rotating per client reads as theatre
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The reference
You are scenting the room, not the drawing
The instinct to match the scent to the scheme is a good instinct applied to the wrong object. Ambient scenting works through congruence: a fragrance that agrees with the space a person is physically occupying is experienced as part of that space, and one that disagrees is experienced as an addition to it. But the space a person is occupying during a presentation is your studio. They are looking at a haveli, or a beach house, or a minimal white apartment, on a screen or on a board, and they are breathing your air. Nothing about the image they are looking at changes what their nose is reporting about the room around them. Which means the reference for your register is fixed and it is the same for every meeting: your floor, your walls, your joinery, your light, and the way your practice presents itself in a first meeting. This is genuinely freeing rather than limiting. It removes the question you cannot answer - which of my eleven current projects should the air agree with - and replaces it with one you can, which is what your own room is made of. It also has an honest limit worth stating plainly: none of this influences whether a scheme is approved or a project is signed, and we will not suggest otherwise. What it does is stop the room from working against the presentation.
Tip: the client is looking at the project and breathing your studio - the fragrance belongs to the second of those, always.
2
The three
White tea with bergamot, white tea with aloe, and the green one
From the seven registers in the Hotel Collection (from ₹299), three are built for a room that has to host many aesthetics. The Ritz-Carlton-inspired blend is white tea, bergamot and cedar: soft white tea and bright bergamot over clean cedar, the hushed polished calm of a grand hotel lobby, and the most broadly comfortable of the three in a studio with white walls, pale timber and good light. The Westin-inspired blend is white tea, aloe and cedar: the spa-like white tea signature, serene, with a cooling aloe edge and soft cedar under it, and it is the quietest and most self-effacing option of the seven - the right answer if you want the room to read as considered without reading as scented at all. The 1 Hotels-inspired blend is cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves: barefoot, biophilic, fresh green leaves over earthy vetiver and warm cedarwood, the driest and least sweet of the whole collection, and the one that belongs in a studio of exposed concrete, blackened steel, raw timber and planting where a white tea would feel too polite for the materials. Those are character descriptions and nothing more: we do not publish a comparison of throw, longevity or intensity between registers, because in practice all three of those are set by the machine, the setting and the volume of your room rather than by the blend. SOSA's blends are its own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
3
The failure mode
Rotating the register per client turns a signature into a costume
Every practice that thinks hard about this arrives at the same clever idea, which is to switch the fragrance to suit the meeting: something warm and layered for the traditional scheme, something cool and green for the minimal one. It fails for three reasons, and they compound. The first is physical: a room does not reset between meetings. Upholstery, curtains, rugs, timber and paper hold what was in the air last week, so switching registers does not give you two clean characters, it gives you one blurred one, and after a month the studio smells of the accumulated average of everything you have run. The second is operational: nobody can hold a consistent calibration across several fragrances. A level that is right for a white tea is wrong for an amber, so the practice ends up either overdosing or losing the setting entirely, and the person adjusting it has adapted to the room and is the worst possible judge of it. The third is that clients notice. Someone who comes in twice, three weeks apart, and finds the room smelling different both times reads it as staging, and staging is precisely the impression a considered practice does not want to give. The alternative is easy and cheap: one register, one locked level, held by a Vaayu (₹11,999) on an app schedule or a Sukoon (₹1,899) with a fixed drop count, running from before the studio opens to after it closes. Put the variation in the presentation, the boards and the sample tray, where variation belongs.
Tip: a room does not reset between meetings - rotate the register and after a month the studio smells of the average of everything you ran.
The SOSA principle
Your register is not part of the scheme you are showing. It is part of the room you are showing it in - and that room is the one constant in your whole portfolio.
White tea over cedar, or cedarwood with vetiver and green leaves. One choice, held at one level, all year, whatever is on the screen.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Is it not more impressive to match the scent to the project we are presenting?
It sounds impressive and it reads as theatre, which is the opposite of the impression a practice with a point of view wants to make. There is also a practical problem underneath the aesthetic one: a room does not clear between meetings, so a scheme-matched fragrance is never actually experienced on its own - it is experienced on top of whatever you ran yesterday, and after a few weeks the studio has no character at all. If you want a sensory element that changes with the project, the honest place for it is the sample tray in front of the client, where a piece of cedar, a leather swatch or a fabric can be handled deliberately and put down again. That is variation the client controls and understands. The air is not that.
Our studio is very traditional in its own interior. Does that change the shortlist?
It narrows it usefully. If your own room is carved timber, deep colour, layered textiles and warm light, the Ritz-Carlton-inspired register with its white tea, bergamot and cedar sits comfortably against it, and the polished cedar base agrees with timber joinery. The 1 Hotels-inspired register, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, is drier and greener and can feel a little austere in a warm traditional room, though it works beautifully if there is planting and raw wood. What we would still avoid is reaching for the plush end and choosing the St. Regis-inspired register because the room is rich: an amber, violet and woods register is a strong decorative statement in its own right, and in a small meeting room it competes with everything you put in front of the client rather than supporting it.
Which register carries furthest in a large studio?
That is not a question the fragrance answers, and we do not publish any comparison of throw, longevity or intensity between the seven registers. What determines how far a scent reaches in your studio is the machine, the setting and the volume of connected air - a large machine running low across a big open plan gives a far more even result than a small one working hard in a corner, whatever is in it. What you can say honestly about character is that a heavier amber and woods register reads as more present in a room than an airy white tea one does, which is a perception rather than a measurement, and it is one more reason the quiet registers suit a studio. If the question behind the question is coverage, send us the plan on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and we will size it with you.
Can different rooms in the practice run different registers?
One register everywhere it is used at all is the better rule, at different levels. A client walks from the entrance to a meeting room in under a minute, and two fragrances inside that distance collide rather than sequence. Where you can legitimately depart from it is a washroom, which people mentally grant separate status, and a closed cabin or a store that nobody circulates through. A reed diffuser from Rs 749 in a washroom does not have to match anything and nobody will find it strange. The material library and any open sampling area are a separate matter entirely and stay out of the scented air altogether, which is a storage rule rather than a register choice.
How do we decide between the two white tea registers?
Look at your light and your palette rather than at the descriptions. The Ritz-Carlton-inspired blend adds bergamot, which gives a brightness at the top that suits a studio with a lot of daylight, white or off-white walls, and pale timber - it makes a room feel awake. The Westin-inspired blend swaps that lift for aloe, which is cooler and more serene, and it is the quieter of the two by character, so it suits a practice that wants the air to be almost unnoticeable and a room that is already calm. Both sit over the same soft cedar base, so the difference is genuinely at the top rather than a change of family, and either is a safe choice. If you cannot decide, the pack of seven 15ml bottles at Rs 1,799 lets you run each of them for a fortnight in your own room, which is worth more than any description on a page.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
