In the week before, clean the sources rather than adding anything - soft furnishings washed or aired, the shoe area emptied and opened up, bins and drains dealt with, and the washroom guests will use properly serviced. Two days before, place the reeds so they have settled by the time anybody arrives: the washroom first, then the shoe area, the bag and gift room, and the landing. On each function morning, ventilate the ground floor for genuine cross-flow before the house is closed and cooled, get the previous day's flowers out of the building, take the bins outside, and reset the shoe area. Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. A machine cannot push scent through a closed bedroom door, and it never will - so a partitioned villa is not one scenting problem but several, and honest sizing means saying so out loud rather than selling you one machine and hoping. Scent the volume that is genuinely open to itself, then give the closed rooms their own quiet answer, usually a reed diffuser. Fragrance never substitutes for ventilation or cleaning. If a room smells damp, stale or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it first; scent added on top of that only makes a more complicated bad smell. A home is not a lobby you pass through. Households include children, elderly parents, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than any visitor does, which is why gentle dosing is the default at home and why the settings we suggest are lower than the machine can run. Anyone in the house reporting a headache is a recalibration signal, not a complaint to argue with - turn it down or turn it off, and tell us. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. In a villa that usually means the entrance, the living room and the dining as one connected space, with the closed rooms handled separately and quietly.

Frequently asked questions
If I remember only one thing from this guide, what should it be?
That the function area is not the job. A roka, engagement, mehendi or haldi at home is largely daytime and largely outdoors, and open air has no enclosure for fragrance to build in, so nothing you buy will scent a courtyard, a lawn or a terrace - and the attempt wastes fragrance outdoors while making whichever indoor room the machine stands in far too strong. What fragrance genuinely does is the arrival and the indoor rooms guests pass through: the entrance hall where the first indoor breath is taken, the washroom every guest visits alone, the shoe area where a hundred pairs end up, the stairs, the bag and gift room, and the room people retreat into when the courtyard gets hot. Get those right, gently, and the house reads as looked after all week. And the free half of the work matters more than the paid half: ventilate every morning, get the spent flowers out of the building, keep the bins outside, and reset the shoe area. Everything else in this guide is detail on top of that.
What is the minimum I should spend if I do not want to buy a machine?
Do the free work properly and then spend Rs 749 at a time, because the free half is genuinely most of the result. Clean the sources in the week before: soft furnishings washed or aired, the shoe area emptied and opened up, bins and drains dealt with, the guest washroom properly serviced. Ventilate the ground floor with real cross-flow every morning before the house is closed and cooled. Get each day's spent flowers out of the building rather than into a utility bin. Then buy in this order. A reed in the washroom guests use, because it is the most attentive thirty seconds anybody spends in your house - Morning Freshness Rs 749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm Rs 799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew Rs 849, with 130ml sizes from Rs 1,249. A reed at the shoe area next, after you have ventilated it. A reed on the landing and one in the bag and gift room. Four reeds is under Rs 3,500 and covers the places guests are alone and paying attention. Only then think about a machine for the hall, and a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299 is an honest first one.
How is this different from scenting a house for an ordinary party?
Three things change, and each one pushes in the same direction. First, location: an ordinary party happens indoors, in the volume you can control, whereas a wedding function largely happens outdoors in a courtyard or garden that cannot be scented at all - so the fragrance job shrinks to the arrival and the indoor route, and the honest plan says so instead of pretending otherwise. Second, competition: an ordinary party has food and people, while a wedding function adds marigold and tuberose in quantity, turmeric, henna and continuous catering, which is why the register has to contrast rather than match and why floral and sweet are the wrong direction here even when they would be lovely at a dinner party. Third, duration: a party is one evening and a wedding is a week, so the house never gets reset, which turns consistency into the governing rule - one register held throughout, and daily maintenance rather than a single pre-party clean. Can I use one machine for the whole villa during the wedding?
For the connected indoor volume, yes, and that is the part that matters. Do the sum: floor area times ceiling height gives cubic feet, divided by 35.3 gives cubic metres, so a 2,000 sq ft connected ground floor at a 10 ft ceiling is 20,000 cubic feet or about 566 cubic metres, comfortably inside one SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999, which is rated at approximately 1000 cubic metres, waterless with a Bluetooth app and timer and four hotel-inspired blends in the box. A 3,500 sq ft connected ground floor is 35,000 cubic feet or about 991 cubic metres, right at the limit of that rating, which calls for central placement rather than a higher setting. On a function day most internal doors are open, which helps, and in a two-floor villa the stair void carries scent upward on its own, so a unit placed low near the stair base does the first landing for you. What no machine does at any price is reach through a closed door or into open air, so bedrooms, the washroom and the bag room take a reed from Rs 749 each, and the courtyard takes nothing. For every room of a large villa matched including upstairs, the Aangan at Rs 25,999 ducts into central air-conditioning.
Somebody at the function said the house smells strong. What should I do?
Turn it down or off in that part of the house straight away, open something, and make sure the person does not feel awkward for having said it. Almost nobody mentions this once, let alone twice, so the fact that somebody did means the level is well past where you think it is - and in a wedding week you are the least reliable judge in the building, because you and everyone living in the house adapted days ago. A wedding gathering is also the least forgiving crowd for this: it includes pregnant relatives, elderly grandparents, small children and at least one person prone to migraine, none of whom chose your fragrance and none of whom can comfortably leave a function in your home. Treat the report as information rather than as a difference of opinion, make the reduction permanent for the rest of the week rather than restoring it the next morning, and check the setting again on an ordinary day once the wedding is over.
