It is worth understanding this properly rather than taking it on trust, because everything else on this page follows from it. The sense of smell is a change-detection system. Its job is to tell you that something is different from a moment ago - food, smoke, damp, another person - and it is very good at that and correspondingly poor at reporting things that stay the same. How long does it take to stop smelling your own home fragrance?
Minutes rather than hours, which surprises most people. If nobody can smell it after an hour, what is the point of running it at all?

It probably is, and it is still worth checking, because guests are polite and the phrasing matters more than people realise.
