This page sells nothing, and it is the one I would most like people to read. Under every fixture in your home there is a deliberate bend in the pipe holding a small standing plug of water. That plug is the only thing separating the rooms you live in from the inside of a drainage system, and it is held there by nothing more sophisticated than gravity. When it is present, you never think about it. When it is absent, the pipe is simply open, and a building's drainage joins your air. Almost nobody is taught this, which is why the resulting smell gets blamed on damp, on the bins, on the neighbours and on the age of the building for months at a time. Here is how it actually works, the four ways a seal is lost, and why the smell so often turns up in the room furthest from the drain that is causing it.

1. A trap is a deliberate bend in the pipe under a fixture, and it holds water on purpose. After a basin drains, the last of the water stays in the bend rather than running away — typically a column about fifty millimetres deep. Every basin, sink, shower, floor gully and WC in your home has one.

2. That water is a barrier, and it is the only one there is. On one side of it is your room; on the other is the waste pipe, the stack and the drainage system. Gas cannot cross a plug of water. Take the water away and there is nothing else in the design doing that job.

3. A dried-out trap is exactly what it sounds like. Nothing has run into the fixture, the water has evaporated at a millimetre or two a day, and after two to four weeks the pipe is simply open into the room.

4. But evaporation is only one of four ways to lose a seal. Siphonage empties it in seconds when another fixture drains hard nearby. Back-pressure from a blocked vent pushes gas straight through it. And a thread or hair draped over the bend will wick the water out by capillary action over days.

What a trap is, and what the water is doing

It is worth understanding this properly, because it is one of the very few pieces of building physics that a householder can both grasp completely and act on immediately. A trap is a shaped section of pipe — a U, or a bottle-shaped chamber, or in a floor gully a moulded well — designed so that when the fixture stops draining, a quantity of water is left standing in it rather than running away. That standing water is called the seal, and its depth is measured vertically from the lowest point of the outlet down to the surface: in most domestic fittings it is intended to be around fifty millimetres. It is not a filter, it does not neutralise anything, and it has no moving parts. It is a plug. Gas on the far side of it cannot get past a column of water unless it can push that column out of the way, and fifty millimetres of water is more resistance than the small pressures inside a properly vented drainage system can generate. That is the whole of the engineering, and it has been done this way for about a hundred and seventy years because it works.

THE FOUR FAILURE MODES
Evaporation, siphonage, back-pressure and capillary action
There are exactly four ways to lose a seal, and knowing which one you have is most of the diagnosis. Evaporation is the slow one and the commonest. Water in a trap is exposed to room air, and it leaves at roughly a millimetre or two a day in warm dry conditions, faster in a wide floor gully than in a narrow bottle trap. A fixture nobody uses therefore loses its seal in something between two and four weeks — which is why holidays, guest bathrooms, second WCs, utility drains and balcony gullies produce almost all of these complaints. Siphonage is the fast one. When a large volume of water goes down a pipe quickly it fills the bore and drags air behind it, creating suction, and if that suction reaches a trap it will pull the seal straight out in a second or two. Self-siphonage is a fixture emptying its own trap — a basin that empties with a long sucking noise at the end has probably just done it. Induced siphonage is one fixture emptying another's on a shared branch, which is why a bathroom can start smelling the moment the washing machine discharges. Back-pressure is the opposite. If the stack cannot draw air in through its vent, a falling slug of water compresses the air ahead of it, and that pressure has to go somewhere: it pushes through the weakest water seal in the system and bubbles into a room, which is both audible and, briefly, quite dramatic. And capillary action is the odd one that almost nobody guesses. A thread, a long hair, a strip of cloth or a piece of dental floss lying over the weir of the bend acts as a wick, drawing water up and over the crown of the trap by surface tension and dripping it away on the far side, a few millilitres at a time, until the seal is gone. It happens most often in basins used for washing clothes and in shower wastes. If you refill a trap, it empties again over a few days with nothing else in the house changing, and you can see a thread lying in the bend, that is your answer and it takes ten seconds to remove.

WHY THE WHOLE FLAT SMELLS
Gas does not stay in the room it enters, and stillness is where it collects
This is the part that causes the most confusion, and it is the reason people spend so long looking in the wrong rooms. An open drain is not a smell in a bathroom. It is a continuous low-rate supply of gas into a flat, and once it is in the flat it behaves like any other airborne constituent — it moves with the air. Doors are open, fans run, the temperature changes through the day, a window is cracked somewhere, and the ordinary convection of a lived-in home distributes it. Two consequences follow, and both are counter-intuitive enough to send people badly astray. The first is that the smell is frequently strongest not where it enters but where the air is stillest, because that is where it accumulates rather than being diluted. A corridor with no window, a spare bedroom that is kept shut, the far end of a sitting room, the space under a staircase — these are the places people report the smell, and there is no drain in any of them. The second is that the source is very often a fixture nobody has thought about for months, precisely because a fixture nobody uses is a fixture whose seal has evaporated. So the search is doubly misdirected: you are looking in the room where you smell it, which is the wrong room, and you are examining the fixtures you use, which are the wrong fixtures. There is a further twist worth knowing. In a flat with an extractor running, a kitchen chimney working, or windows open on one side only, the interior can sit at a very slightly lower pressure than the space around it, and air will be drawn in through any available opening — including an open drain. That is why some households find the smell arrives reliably when the exhaust fan goes on, which sounds like the fan causing the problem and is in fact the fan revealing it.

THE FIX, AND WHERE IT ENDS
Water, oil, and the point at which it stops being yours to solve
The correction is genuinely as simple as it sounds, and I say that as somebody with nothing to sell you at the end of it. Pour water into the trap and the barrier is restored the moment the level comes back. Do the whole property rather than the room you can smell, for the reasons in the section above. The smell begins clearing within minutes, and it will be gone by the following morning if evaporation was the cause. Where a fixture is chronically unused, add about a teaspoon of ordinary cooking oil to the water in a floor gully. Oil floats and does not mix, so it forms a film across the surface and greatly slows evaporation from underneath — a treated gully can hold a seal for months rather than weeks. Keep the oil out of basins and kitchen sinks, where it will settle on the pipe wall and give you a different problem entirely. If the property is often empty, put a monthly reminder in your phone; five minutes on the first of the month is the whole of the maintenance. And here is where it stops being yours. If you refill every trap in the property and the smell returns within days, evaporation was not the cause, and you now have a much more useful piece of information than you had yesterday: you know it is siphonage, back-pressure or a failed seal, all three of which are plumbing rather than housekeeping. Sewer gas entering a home persistently is a fault to be corrected rather than tolerated, and the correct next step is a plumber with a smoke test rather than anything bought in a shop.
The test that separates a trap problem from a vent problem, and it takes one minute: refill every trap, then have somebody flush the WC or empty a full bath while you stand and listen at a basin, a shower waste and a floor gully. A gurgle, a glug, or a visible movement of the water in the trap means the system is taking its air from your seals — that is the vent, not the trap, and no amount of water will hold it.

So the method is mechanical rather than intuitive: make a list of every trap in the flat before you start, walk it in order, and pour water into all of them. A typical two-bedroom Indian flat has more than most people expect — a kitchen sink, possibly a second sink or a utility one, a washing-machine standpipe or gully, two or three basins, one or two shower wastes, two or three floor gullies, two WCs, and often a balcony drain and an air-conditioner condensate drain as well. That is a dozen or more water seals, any one of which can be the source, and about half of them are in places you never look. Do the list, not the search. It takes five minutes and it eliminates the entire commonest cause in one pass, which is a far better use of an evening than sniffing at skirting boards.

Then the test that tells you whether you are dealing with a trap or with the vent, because these are completely different problems with completely different costs. Refill everything, wait an hour, then make the system work while you listen. Have somebody flush the WC, or better still empty a full bath or run the washing machine's discharge, and stand at each of the other fixtures in turn with your ear near the plughole. What you are listening for is a gurgle, a glug or a sucking noise, and what you are looking for in an open floor gully is visible movement of the water surface. Silence and stillness mean the system is breathing properly through its vent, and your problem was evaporation, which you have just fixed permanently by filling the traps and will keep fixed with a monthly top-up. Noise or movement means the system is drawing its air through your seals instead of through its vent — either pulling them out or pushing gas through them — and no quantity of water will hold against that, because it will be removed again on the next discharge. That is a vent or stack fault. It is a plumber's job, it usually involves inspecting the vent terminal at roof level or putting a camera and a smoke test through the system, and it is worth telling him exactly what you observed, because a householder who says the basin gurgles when the bath empties has effectively done the first half of his diagnosis for him.

Then the maintenance, and the honest end of this page. In a flat in continuous use, no maintenance is needed at all — ordinary living refills every seal many times a day, which is why this problem is invisible to most people most of the time. What needs attention is anything outside that: a guest bathroom, a second WC, a floor gully in a room where everyone showers in a cubicle, a balcony drain, a utility gully behind a machine that only runs twice a week, a flat that is empty for parts of the year, or a property being kept for family who visit. I have wanted to write this page for a long time, and it has no product in it because it should not have one. A drain trap is the most useful thing I know that almost nobody has been told about: a plug of water, fifty millimetres deep, held in a bend by gravity, doing the entire job of keeping a drainage system out of a bedroom.
