Is it safe to use a diffuser around children?
We do not make health or safety claims about fragrance in either direction, so here is what we can say usefully and honestly. Gentle is the sensible default when children are in the room, because they are smaller, closer to the floor, more numerous at a party than adults are, and in the room for a long continuous stretch. The physical safety questions are the ones with clear answers: keep any diffuser out of a child's reach, off low tables and windowsills, away from cords that cross a floor, and well away from lit candles. Reed diffusers hold liquid oil in an open-necked bottle and should never sit at a small child's eye level. Ultrasonic machines hold water and need a power point, so the cable placement matters as much as the machine does. Beyond that, our honest recommendation for a children's party is to keep added fragrance out of the party room entirely and put a single reed at the entrance instead. If any parent raises it, switch it off. Ventilation and cleaning come first in every case.
What if a parent says the house smells too strong?
Turn it off in that part of the house immediately, open a window, thank them, and do not ask them to justify it. Almost nobody raises this once, let alone twice, and a parent at somebody else's child's party is about the least likely person in the world to say anything, so if it has been said the level is well past where you thought it was. It is also worth knowing that you are the least reliable judge in the building: you have been in the house all morning setting up, your nose adapted hours ago, and by three in the afternoon you will sincerely believe nothing is running while a parent walking in from the street is getting the full dose of it. Treat the comment as information about your setting rather than about their tolerance, make the reduction permanent rather than a one-off politeness for that afternoon, and check the setting again on an ordinary day when the house is empty and cool. A guest headache is a recalibration signal, not a tolerance problem.
Can I use a scented candle instead of a diffuser at a children's party?
We would not, and the reason is flame rather than fragrance. A children's party already has one set of candles that has to be lit, on the cake, in a room where a dozen children are moving fast around a table. Adding more open flames at low level, on side tables and consoles, in a house full of running children and trailing dupattas and paper decorations, is adding a hazard for a decorative benefit. If you want the house to feel prepared, a reed diffuser from Rs 749 does the same job at the entrance with no flame at all, needs no supervision and carries on working for roughly six to ten weeks rather than for one afternoon. If you do light anything, keep it well out of reach and well away from where the cake will be carried and set down, and keep every other fragrance product off the same surface. This is a placement rule rather than a claim about any product.
Should I run the machine before the children arrive and then switch it off?
That is a genuinely good compromise if you already own one, and it is what we would do. Schedule it to run during the morning while you are cleaning and setting up, finish it well before the first child arrives, and let the residual, evenly settled air be the whole of the effect. That gives you a house that reads as prepared at the front door without anything actively scenting a room full of children for three hours. The house smells of a dozen children and party food afterwards. What now?
Ventilation, not more fragrance, and it is quick. Open windows on opposite sides of the house so air genuinely crosses rather than sitting, run the kitchen extractor for a while longer, get the food and the bins out, and wipe down the surfaces that had juice and cake on them, which is most of what you are actually smelling. Soft furnishings hold party food surprisingly well, so the sofa covers and the rug are worth attention if the party was on them.
