Take a tape to it once and you never have to guess again. Measure the part of the floor that is genuinely open to itself on card night - in most modern flats and villas that is the living area, the dining area and whatever passage runs between them, because the card tables get set up across the whole of it and people move between tables all evening. Multiply the floor area by the ceiling height to get cubic feet, then divide by 35.3 to get cubic metres. Run it for the usual sizes at a standard 10 ft ceiling. 400 sq ft = 4,000 cu ft = about 113m³, which is one decent sitting room. 600 sq ft = 6,000 cu ft = about 170m³. 800 sq ft = 8,000 cu ft = about 227m³. 1,000 sq ft = 10,000 cu ft = about 283m³. 1,200 sq ft = 12,000 cu ft = about 340m³. A living and dining area with two or three card tables in it almost always lands in that 600 to 800 band, so about 170 to 227 cubic metres is the number you are actually shopping for. Two adjustments. If your ceiling is higher than 10 ft, use your real height: 800 sq ft at 12 ft is 9,600 cubic feet, about 272m³, and a double-height section roughly doubles its own contribution. And if the hall and the stair void are open to the room with no door between them, add them, because air does not respect a change of flooring. Now hold that number against the machines and the answer is uncomfortable for anyone selling the big one: 170 to 227m³ is a room-sized problem, and there are room-sized products for it at a fraction of the price. The layout
The tables decide where the machine cannot go
Every other room in your house is a place people pass through. A card room is a place people sit in, in fixed positions, for four to eight hours, which makes placement a comfort question rather than a coverage one. Nothing on or beside a card table. No machine, no reed bottle, no scented candle, no gel pot on the side table beside a player's elbow. A fragrance source a metre from somebody's face for six hours is a completely different experience from the same source across a room, and the person sitting there did not choose it and cannot move seats without making it awkward. Card tables also carry drinks, plates, cards and phones, and a bottle of oil in that traffic is asking to be knocked over. Nothing in the direct draught of a split air-conditioner. A unit sitting under the throw of a split will be carried hard along one wall and dumped, so the table nearest the machine gets a great deal and the far table gets almost nothing, which is the specific failure that makes hosts turn the dial up and ruin the whole room. Put it out of the airflow and let it disperse into the volume rather than being blown across it. Nothing near an open diya, lamp or candle. During Diwali there are lamps on the console, on the parapet, on the threshold and often on the very surfaces a machine or a reed would otherwise use. Keep fragrance and flame on separate surfaces entirely, and think about where lamps get moved to later in an evening as trays come and go. This is a safety instruction and it outranks every aesthetic preference on this page. So where does it actually go? Low, at the edge of the volume, near the entrance end - the part of the room people walk through rather than sit in - with clear air around it and a live socket that is not shared with the lamps and fairy lights. It does not earn its place when the job is one enclosed living room of 170 to 227m³ used for cards a few evenings a year. That is a fifth to a quarter of its approximately 1000m³ rating, and a Sukoon at ₹1,899 or a Megh at ₹3,499 running the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 does that room properly for a fraction of the money. If somebody tells you a card room needs a whole-home system, they are describing their price list rather than your air. It earns its place in two situations, and both are about the rest of the year rather than about card night. The first is genuine connected volume: if your entrance, hall, living area, dining and passage flow into one another with no doors, and the stair void is open above them, you are no longer scenting a room, you are scenting a floor - a 1,500 sq ft connected ground floor at 10 ft is 15,000 cubic feet, about 425m³, and 2,000 sq ft is about 566m³, which is past what one ultrasonic holds evenly. The second is that you want the house to do this every day rather than on one October evening. Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. A machine cannot push scent through a closed bedroom door, and it never will - so a partitioned villa is not one scenting problem but several, and honest sizing means saying so out loud rather than selling you one machine and hoping. Scent the volume that is genuinely open to itself, then give the closed rooms their own quiet answer, usually a reed diffuser. Fragrance never substitutes for ventilation or cleaning. If a room smells damp, stale or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it first; scent added on top of that only makes a more complicated bad smell. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. In a villa that usually means the entrance, the living room and the dining as one connected space, with the closed rooms handled separately and quietly.

Frequently asked questions
My living and dining is about 700 sq ft. What is that in cubic metres?
About 198 cubic metres at a standard 10 ft ceiling, and here is the working so you can redo it for your own height. Floor area times ceiling height gives cubic feet: 700 times 10 is 7,000 cubic feet. Cubic feet divided by 35.3 gives cubic metres: 7,000 divided by 35.3 is 198.3, so call it about 198. If your ceiling is 11 ft the same floor is 7,700 cubic feet, about 218 cubic metres, and at 12 ft it is 8,400 cubic feet, about 238. The reason the number matters is that it puts you firmly in room territory rather than house territory. A Sukoon at Rs 1,899 or a Megh at Rs 3,499, both water-based ultrasonics taking the Hotel Collection from Rs 299, will hold about 198 cubic metres comfortably at a gentle setting. A Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is rated at approximately 1000 cubic metres of connected air, so it is around five times what that room needs, and buying it for one room is only sensible if you also want it running the rest of the house all year. Add the hall and the passage to your measurement if there is no door between them, because air does not stop at a change of flooring.
Can I just put the diffuser on the console next to the diyas so it is out of the way?
No. Keep every fragrance product well away from any open diya, lamp or candle, and that includes the console, the parapet, the threshold, the puja thali and any window ledge where a lamp is burning or is likely to be placed later in the evening. Reed diffusers are open-necked bottles of liquid oil. Machines sit near power points, and during Diwali the power points end up shared with fairy lights and the surfaces around them fill up with lamps. A card evening also runs long and gets busier as it goes, with trays moving, people standing up behind chairs and children passing through, which is exactly when something gets knocked. Put the unit on a clear low surface at the entrance end of the room, on a socket of its own, with nothing burning within reach of it, and treat that as a permanent house rule rather than a party rule. Two of my card tables are near the balcony door where people smoke. Should I put a diffuser there?
Please do not, and the reason is that it will not work rather than that we are being precious. Fragrance does not remove smoke; it joins it, and the nose reads the combination, so a machine aimed at a smoking corner gives you smoke plus fragrance, which is worse than smoke and considerably worse than fresh air. What genuinely helps is physical. Keep the balcony door the smoking side of the threshold rather than the room side, so people step out rather than lean in. Empty and rinse ashtrays through the evening instead of at the end, because a full ashtray keeps working long after the cigarette is out. If you have a fan or an extractor near that end, run it. Then place your fragrance at the other end of the room entirely, near the entrance, at a level you would call gentle, and let the two ends of the volume be what they are. Ventilation and cleaning come first here, as everywhere, and we make no air-purification or health claims for home fragrance.
Is one machine enough if the card tables are spread across two connected rooms?
Usually yes, provided the two rooms are genuinely connected. If there is a wide opening or no door at all between them, that is one body of air and one machine's job, so do the sum across both together: two areas of 400 sq ft each at a 10 ft ceiling is 800 sq ft, 8,000 cubic feet, about 227 cubic metres, which one well-placed ultrasonic can hold at a gentle setting. Put it in the connecting zone rather than in the middle of either room, so both fill from the same source and neither table is sitting on top of it. Where this stops being true is a door. No machine at any price pushes scent through a closed door, so if the second card table is in a study or a bedroom that gets shut, that room is a separate volume and the honest fix is a reed from Rs 749 in it, in the same character family as whatever is running outside, rather than a second machine. If you find yourself counting three or four connected spaces plus a hall and a stair void, you have crossed into floor-sized coverage and the Vaayu at Rs 11,999 becomes the sensible piece.
Should the machine run all through the game or only before people arrive?
Get the room right before anyone sits down, then leave it alone, and this matters more at a card party than at any other kind of evening. Your guests will be in that same air for four to eight hours, which means their noses adapt to it within the first half hour and stop reporting it - and so will yours, faster, because you were in the room all afternoon setting up. The level that feels like nothing at ten o'clock is almost always the same level that was correct at seven, and turning it up because you can no longer smell it is the single most common mistake at a card evening. It also lands badly: a setting raised at ten is still raised at one in the morning, in a room full of people who cannot leave and who include, in most Indian gatherings, an elderly relative, somebody pregnant and at least one person prone to migraine. Run a gentle schedule that starts well before the first car and let it hold. If anyone says the room smells strong, turn it down immediately and permanently rather than treating it as a matter of opinion.
