Founder Diaries · SOSA Commercial Scenting Guides
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated September 2026
The same door that costs you a little in December costs you considerably more in May, because the size of each air swap depends on how different the two sides are - and in an Andhra summer they are very different indeed.
Quick answers — read this first
How do frequently opening doors affect fragrance retention? Each opening exchanges a parcel of inside air for outside air, and the larger the temperature difference the more vigorous that exchange is. In peak summer the same door frequency therefore removes more scented air than it does in mild weather.

What are the practical fixes? A vestibule or air-lock entrance, self-closing doors that actually latch, keeping secondary and service doors shut, and positioning the machine away from the entrance so its output is not swept straight back out.

Should I raise the setting to compensate? Only modestly, and as a scheduled seasonal adjustment rather than a permanent increase. Raising output to counter door losses mostly raises consumption. A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 placed away from the door does more than an intensity increase.
The short answer
Short answer: Bigger temperature differences make each door opening swap more air, so losses peak in May. Fix the doors before raising the setting.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, so it adds no humidity through the monsoon - on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299, with reeds from ₹749 for small still rooms.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your floor area, ceiling height, AC and fan usage, glazing and how often the main doors open - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
How do frequently opening doors affect fragrance retention in Andhra's hottest months?
Considerably more than they do the rest of the year, and the mechanism is worth understanding. Every time a door opens, inside air and outside air exchange - and the vigour of that exchange depends on how different the two bodies of air are. In December the difference is small and the swap is modest. In May, with 40 degrees outside and a conditioned interior, the difference is large and each opening moves a great deal more air, driven by the pressure and density difference across the doorway. So the same door frequency costs you far more scented air in summer than in winter, which is one of the reasons a business concludes its fragrance has weakened in April. Four fixes, in order of value. A vestibule or air-lock entrance is by far the most effective, because it prevents a direct connection between inside and outside at any moment; it also cuts cooling cost significantly, which usually pays for it. Self-closing doors that actually latch - a door left ajar is a continuous exchange rather than an intermittent one. Secondary and service doors kept shut, because the back door propped open for a delivery undoes the front-of-house discipline entirely and creates a through-draught. And machine placement away from the entrance, so its output is not swept straight back out through the door it was placed beside. Raising the intensity is the least effective response and mostly raises consumption; where a seasonal increase is warranted, schedule it and reverse it after the summer. A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 on fragrance from ₹299. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: hot outside plus cold inside makes every door opening bigger - fix the doors and the placement before the setting.
Placement beats intensity here: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 positioned away from the entrance keeps its output in the room instead of feeding it to the doorway. Fragrance from ₹299, and a vestibule beats both.

Why the same door costs you more in May

Door losses are usually treated as a constant and they are strongly seasonal, which explains a lot of April complaints.

Why this works
Reducing door losses
1 A vestibule or air-lock entrance - the most effective fix, and it cuts cooling cost 2 Self-closing doors that actually latch, checked rather than assumed 3 Secondary and service doors kept shut, especially during deliveries 4 Machine placed away from the entrance, not beside it
The machine that suits an Andhra year: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, so no added humidity in a wet month, with timers and a locked intensity for a seasonal schedule. Fragrance from ₹299.
01
Why summer is different
A bigger difference means a bigger swap
Air exchange through a doorway is driven by the difference between the two sides, so a 20 degree gap moves far more air than a 5 degree one. In Vijayawada in May that gap is at its annual maximum, which means door losses are too - and they are highest at exactly the time of year the interior is working hardest. Understanding this stops the seasonal drop being attributed to the machine, and points the response at the doorway instead, which is where it belongs.
Tip: Door losses peak in the month the interior works hardest.
02
The best fix
A vestibule, which pays for itself anyway
An air-lock entrance means there is never a direct opening between conditioned and unconditioned air, only two doors that are rarely open simultaneously. The cooling saving alone usually justifies it in an Andhra summer, and the fragrance benefit is a side effect of a change worth making regardless. It also reduces road dust ingress and softens the thermal contrast a customer experiences on entering, which improves how the arrival reads. Three benefits, one piece of work.
03
The overlooked one
The back door during a delivery
Front-of-house door discipline is usually reasonable; back-of-house is rarely enforced. A service door propped open during a delivery, on a hot afternoon, creates a through-draught that sweeps the whole floor - and it happens at predictable times nobody has thought about. Fit a self-closer, include it in the operating instructions and schedule deliveries away from peak hours where you can. It costs nothing and it removes one of the largest single losses in a working day.
Tip: The back door during a delivery is the biggest loss of the day.
The SOSA principle
The same door costs you more in May than in December, because what leaves depends on how different the two sides are.
Which is why the response belongs at the doorway rather than at the dial.

Setting a level around door losses

Placement and door management do most of the work here; the register matters less than in almost any other decision in this series.

The SOSA scent edit
For a business with heavy door traffic
Scent Why it suits the mood
Vestibule The most effective fix, and it pays for itself in cooling cost
Self-closers A door left ajar is continuous exchange rather than intermittent
Service doors Propped open during deliveries - the largest single loss of the day
Placement Away from the entrance, so output is not swept straight back out

The vehicle-showroom version of this problem is in the big doors chapter, the perception effects that accompany it are in the summer heat chapter, and the arrival contrast a vestibule softens is in the heat-to-cold chapter.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

SOSA Aangan Large premises, or scenting carried on the building's own HVAC HVAC-mount nebulising machine, 800ml, roughly 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft, under 42 dB ₹25,999
SOSA Meenar Hotels, large showrooms, venues, corporate floors The largest machine in the range, specified for roughly 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft ₹38,500
Hotel Collection fragrance The fragrance the machines actually run on Seven scents, 15ml / 100ml / 300ml. SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand from ₹299
Honest notes on climate: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Continuous air-conditioning loads filters and fills drip trays, and a loaded filter changes how a room smells regardless of any fragrance setting, so AC servicing is checked before machine intensity is raised. Dust entering a road-facing premises is a filtration and door-management matter. Ultrasonic diffusers add humidity by design, which is a disadvantage in monsoon months; waterless machines do not. Perceived intensity varies with temperature contrast at the entrance, so levels are judged from the doorway rather than from inside. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. A note from Sonal

Everything I know about fragrance behaving differently in India I learned from complaints that turned out not to be about fragrance. In April, an air conditioner in Vijayawada runs almost continuously, pushing the same air through the same filter all day. By the second month of summer that filter has changed the room more than any setting on a machine has, and the owner concludes the fragrance has faded.

The second thing is arrival. Somebody stepping out of 40 degree air into a cold room takes the most sensitive breath they will take all day, and your staff - eight hours in - cannot perceive it at anything like that intensity. Judge the level from the doorway, having been outside. It is free, it takes two minutes, and it is the only honest test there is.

And the monsoon point that matters commercially: a waterless machine adds no humidity, while an ultrasonic diffuser adds a little by design. In a wet Andhra month that is the difference between a fresh room and a damp one. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Frequently asked questions

How do opening doors affect fragrance retention in summer?
Each opening exchanges inside and outside air, and the larger the temperature difference the more vigorous that exchange. In peak summer the same door frequency removes far more scented air.
What is the most effective fix?
A vestibule or air-lock entrance, which prevents any direct opening between conditioned and unconditioned air. It also cuts cooling cost and reduces dust ingress.
Which loss gets overlooked?
Service and back doors propped open during deliveries on hot afternoons, which create a through-draught that sweeps the whole floor.
Should I raise the setting to compensate?
Only modestly and as a scheduled seasonal adjustment. Raising output mostly raises consumption, while placement and door discipline address the actual cause.
Where should the machine sit?
Away from the entrance, so its output is not swept straight back out. A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 placed correctly outperforms the same machine placed badly at a higher setting. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Facts verified September 2026: Fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Continuously running air-conditioning loads filters and fills drip trays, and this changes how a space smells independently of any fragrance setting; servicing is therefore checked before machine intensity is increased. Dust ingress in road-facing premises is a filtration and door-management matter and is not addressed by fragrance. Ultrasonic diffusers introduce humidity by design and waterless cold-air machines do not, which is relevant in monsoon conditions. Perceived fragrance intensity varies with the temperature contrast a person experiences on entering, so levels are assessed from the entrance rather than from within the space.
